Street numbers here often cover four or five front doors, so put the unit number on the order. Cassandra's Feefo review says we got flowers to her mum "that very afternoon". Why the cutoff is 2pm

2pm weekdays is a bench-and-run window, not an office rule. Saturday closes at 10am because the market floor opens at 5am and is done by nine.

Where it actually lands

Five address types: a house, a villa behind a shared driveway, a room at Woonona, a ward at Wollongong Hospital, a Bellambi Lane unit.

What the coast does to a stem

Bellambi never reaches the warm band. A rose that gives 3 to 6 days in a Darwin lounge room gives 7 to 10 here.

Who makes it

We have no shop in Bellambi. The order lands with a florist in or near the suburb who has the stems that day. The trade is below.

You Have No Shop in Bellambi. What Am I Buying?

We have never had a shop here. Your order goes out as a paid job to a florist in or close to the suburb, who builds it themselves the same day. You give up something real. You cannot stand at a bucket and point, and a shop at Corrimal will let you. What you get is an order that does not hang on one shop being open and stocked on a Tuesday. When it is not, it moves.

The doorstep is the kindest part of a Bellambi delivery. The kitchen is not.

Anna, qualified florist | fifteen years on the bench, and a verdict on the vase

Everybody sending flowers to a beach suburb braces for the doorstep. Brace for the wrong thing here. There is a weather station in this suburb, running since 1988: hottest month averages 25 degrees, coldest 17.2, and there is no frost at sea level. A rose that gives three to six days in a Darwin lounge room gives seven to ten here.

What ends an arrangement here happens after the door shuts. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene and the sensitive stems react at about 100 parts per billion, barely a trace. Waxflower catches people out: every floret drops off the stem at once and it looks like somebody shook it over the bin. Carnation fails quieter, curling its petals shut. A bar heater in a small July room dries the stem from the top down.

Chrysanthemum ignores all of it. One instruction: keep the vase out of the kitchen and off the sill above a heater.

Let the florist pick what is strongest

The Two Fields That Decide a Bellambi Delivery

One street number, five front doors

Dwellings in Bellambi, ABS Census 2021 (SAL10264): separate house 51.4 per cent, semi-detached, villa or duplex 38.4 per cent, flat or apartment 9.8 per cent. Renting 53.0 per cent, so the name on the door is often newer than the details on file.

14 CAWLEY STREET

One number on the kerb. This is everything a driver can see from the street.

The same order, two ways

Order says 14 Cawley Street

Five doors, no answer at the first two, no marker on the kerb to say which one. The driver knocks, guesses, or takes it back. A same day delivery becomes a next day delivery and nobody did anything wrong.

Order says 14B, plus a mobile

Right door, first knock. Nobody home, the driver rings the number, and the flowers go under the carport or behind the screen door as instructed. At the door by mid afternoon.

Two fields on the order form, about eight seconds

Unit or villa number
14B, not 14. Put it in the address line.
A mobile for the recipient
Used at the door, and only when nobody answers it.

Almost four in ten Bellambi homes sit behind a shared street number, and that cannot be fixed from the kerb at 2.40pm. You can, right now, before you pay.

How a Bellambi Order Runs

Stems come off the market floor at Homebush West, 80km up the highway, where 170 traders move about three quarters of the NSW wholesale trade. A metropolitan supply line for a suburb Sydney files as regional.

What Bellambi Sends, and What Trips It Up

Four occasions carry most of what leaves here, plus the no reason at all order.

The birthday is today and the address is a villa

You will not be at the table, so the flowers go instead. A third of the households here are single-parent and half the suburb rents, so nobody is home before four. From what drivers report back, a named spot beats a left-at-door: under the carport, behind the screen door. Flowers for mum lead this postcode.

Chrysanthemum is the stem for a doorstep order. Ethylene does not touch it, it carries no scent, and it still looks like something four days after a carnation beside a fruit bowl has curled shut.

Ask the family before you decide the flowers

Two calls to make, and only one is to us. Service flowers go to the funeral director ahead of the day, in practice a chapel on the highway at Bulli. Flowers to the house are a separate, softer order, and three days is the window. Four in ten households here record no religion, so the white sheaf is a guess rather than a default; ask the family what she grew in her own garden. Bellambi's Aboriginal community is two and a half times the state rate and Bellambi Point was declared an Aboriginal Place in 2012, so the first question is whether flowers are wanted at all, and no photograph belongs on a card without checking.

Anna would narrow the stems before you order.

Where natives are the right call, they came off this coastline. Wattle carries love and friendship, waratah renewal and the honouring of Elders, and the leucadendron behind them is still standing a fortnight after the service.

Bulli or Wollongong, and is it even open?

Get the building right and the rest is easy. Bulli Hospital is closer at five kilometres and has no emergency department; urgent care runs 8am to 8pm weekdays and 8am to 4.30pm weekends, and anything serious goes eight kilometres south to Wollongong Hospital. From what our florists have seen, ward flowers go to main reception and a ward clerk walks them to the bed on the next round. Put the full patient name and the ward on the order.

Anna on ward orders

No lilies, nothing potted. Wollongong has an intensive care unit and a cancer centre, so both rules bite there. Send a box or a vase, never a hand-tied bunch, because a ward tends not to have a spare vase, and in our experience a wrapped bunch means a nurse hunting a container before anybody sees a flower.

The room is in Woonona, not Bellambi

More than three hundred and sixty aged-care beds sit within three kilometres of Bellambi and not one is inside the suburb. Woonona holds the two largest, Tarrawanna the next. Delivery goes to reception with the resident's full name, and on a long stay there is no discharge to race.

Send a box. Staff have enough on without topping up a vase, and a box carries its own water. Small and front-facing so it shares the bedside table with the medical bits, low fragrance in a shared room, and in a dementia unit something the resident would recognise from her own garden.

Not sure what to send

Most people ordering flowers know nothing about flowers. In our first week with the shop a customer asked Andrew three questions in a row and he told her to hold on while he checked with his wife. Siobhan did not know either.

A mixed bunch on chrysanthemum and carnation with a few feature stems, under sixty. Every photograph in this trade shows the premium size, ours included, so the picture is the eighty dollar version. The sixty dollar one is built differently: more long-life structure, fewer feature blooms. Natives for the longest run.

Bellambi Delivery Questions, Answered Straight

What happens if nobody is home in Bellambi?

The driver rings the mobile on the order, then leaves it where you said. With no spot named and a shared driveway to guess at, it comes back and tries again the next working day.

Can you deliver to a business on Bellambi Lane?

Yes, with the unit number and before about four, while somebody is at the roller door. The estate numbers its units into the seventies.

Do flowers actually last on this part of the coast?

Better than inland, and better than most expect. Bellambi stays in the moderate band all year, so carnations run 14 to 21 days and chrysanthemums 14 to 24. The room decides the rest.

What to Put on the Order

Cutoffs

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. We do not run on Sundays.

Cost

From $42.95. Delivery is a flat fee across 2518 and either side of it.

Timing

School traffic on Cawley Street, where Holy Spirit College and the IGA sit, slows the middle of the day. Mid morning is the earliest drop.

The Bellambi instruction set

Unit or villa number in the address line. A mobile for the recipient. A named safe spot, because a shared driveway is not a doorstep. Order by 2pm on a weekday and it is at their door that afternoon. On a Saturday the cutoff is 10am.

After You Order

An order number comes back straight away, and the address reaches the florist as you typed it. If it lands wrong, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected] with a photo that day.

Siobhan, on the calls we used to take ourselves

Andrew and I were on the phones from 2006 to 2013, and in the early years I did the runs too. You pull up at Murwillumbah Hospital with Asha screaming in the back, the flowers have to be at reception, you have five minutes and nowhere to park. Which is why this page keeps saying reception rather than bedside. The calls that came back to us were rarely about the flowers. Somebody had moved, or the mobile we held was two years old, and we would ring the sender to ask. So we put the recipient's mobile on the order form instead of chasing it after a second attempt. Eight seconds from you, and that call stopped.

Siobhan and I started this network in early 2009 with one florist, a fax machine and a list of towns we had kept a tally of for six months. It is more than eight hundred now, and every order still comes down to one pair of hands and one address. Which is why this page spends so long on a unit number.

The rest is on the about Lily's Florist page.
