Flowers to Bellenden Ker today? Yes, right out to the farmhouses along the Bruce Highway. Order before 2pm on a weekday and they arrive this afternoon, at a home, a funeral service or a bed at the Babinda Multi-Purpose Health Centre on Munro Street. Later than that, just pick the day at checkout. Choose from our hand-selected range of same-day flowers below and pay securely online, or call us and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will do it all with you.
What to send so it lasts in a warm far north house
Far north florists buy their tropical stems close to home, anthuriums, heliconias and bird of paradise, while the roses and lilies tend to come up from the Brisbane market at Rocklea. The tropicals grew in that climate and barely notice it. A chrysanthemum shrugs it off too, and in a house with the windows open I would expect ten days or more from one.
Roses want more attention there. Warm water clouds fast, bacteria block the cut end within a day, and the rose drops its head. I learned that at Salt in Kingscliff, tipping out buckets that smelt by the second morning. Change the water daily and recut on an angle.
Most flowers sent into a place this size are ordered by family living somewhere else, a son in Cairns or a sister in Brisbane, and they are usually for one of the three reasons below. A few more are neighbours saying thank you for a house checked on in the wet.
The notice gives a time, the service is in Babinda or Cairns, and you will not make the drive.
Flowers for the service go to the funeral director first, so put the director's name and the start time in the notes. On the card, "So sorry. Thinking of you all." is enough. Siobhan and I carried sprays into cane-country cemeteries much like this one around the Tweed from 2006 to 2009. In February 2008 I walked one across Tweed Valley Lawn Cemetery on Eviron Road in a downpour, shirt pulled over it like I had pinched it. The spray arrived dry. I did not.
White flowers sit right at a country service. White chrysanthemums hold their shape through a long service in the heat. Lilies are lovely too; ask for them with a little colour showing in the bud, because warmth opens them fast and a lily that is fully blown the day before looks tired by the service.
You have a ward name off a family text and no idea if it is current.
The Babinda Multi-Purpose Health Centre is the nearest hospital, and bigger cases tend to go up to Cairns, so check which before you send get-well flowers. In our experience they go to the ward desk and the staff carry them in. Siobhan and I made that walk at Tweed Hospital and John Flynn more times than we could count. "Thinking of you. Home soon." suits most cards.
Ward air is conditioned and dry, and it pulls water out of soft petals until the edges crisp. Carnations have waxy petals that resist that dry air, and any vase lasts longest well away from the vent.
He will tell you he did not need anything, then leave them on the kitchen table until they are finished.
Send the flowers to the house on the day with a mobile. In our experience, if he is out in the paddock the driver rings and someone comes up to take them in. The birthday range for him leans on sturdy stems a man will actually keep.
Anna's pick: protea, for a farmhouse kitchen. It drinks hard, so top the vase up daily. The leaves will blacken as the flower head pulls sugar out of them, and the head itself holds on for a week or more.
Some orders fit no heading at all: a new job, a sale finally through, a sister you have not rung in a while.
For those I would go Florist's Choice. Up that way it often ends up built around anthuriums or heliconias, and their waxy skin holds water in, so they keep their gloss for days in a room with no aircon.

When I was on the phones, from 2006 until Ivy came along in 2011, the orders that went wrong were nearly always timing: a funeral order placed after the service had started. So for a funeral, order early, the day before if you can. And if nobody rings to say thanks, that is normal. They are grieving, or busy, or out in a paddock. Flowers are small next to all that, and people still keep the card.
Once it is ordered, the rest is ours to worry about.
