Netball, the Hinterland, and How We Got to Know Belli Park

In 2025, our youngest daughter Ivy won the Queensland state title for representative netball at Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex. Asha, her older sister who'd played her own state titles on this same stretch of coast years earlier, was there watching. The photo below is the two of them right after the final. We have been coming to the Sunshine Coast for our kids' sport since Ivy was twelve. Before Maroochydore it was Caloundra Indoor Sports Stadium, where Ivy played shooter for South Coast and her team won the whole thing over three days. Before that, we stayed in Montville for a family holiday and ended up at the Ginger Factory in Yandina, with both girls soaking wet from the boat ride and buzzing on ginger ice cream. Different trips, different years, same region getting under our skin.

Those long drives between venues gave us time to see the Sunshine Coast properly. Not the beachfront strip that tourists see, but the hinterland behind it. Kenilworth Road, rolling through Belli Park, paddocks giving way to thick bush, the occasional driveway disappearing up a hill to a property you'd never know was there. That road connects Eumundi to Kenilworth and runs right through the heart of what makes this region feel so different from the Gold Coast or Brisbane. Quiet. Spread out. Properly rural in a way that catches people off guard when they realise it's technically still the Sunshine Coast.

Belli Park has a population of about 724 people. It has a community hall and a rural fire brigade. No school, no shops. The nearest groceries are in Cooroy or Eumundi.
