Flowers delivered in Birmingham Gardens today: order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday, and they arrive this afternoon. Any other day, just pick it at checkout. Sending to a student on campus at the University of Newcastle next door? Pop their college and room number in the notes. Choose from our same-day range below, maybe the Simply Stylish With Chocolates & Vase (handy, because student rooms don't usually run to a vase), or call us and one of our friendly Australian-based team will help you pick.
No vase at the share house? Clean water decides how long the flowers last
In a share house near the uni, the water decides how long flowers last, and any clean container will hold it: a jug, a pasta pot, a milk bottle with the top cut off. In warm water, bacteria block the cut stem ends within a day, and the heads droop on stems that still look green.
Rinse the container in hot water. No flower food sachet? A few drops of bleach does the same job on the bacteria. Recut the stems at about forty-five degrees and change the water every second day. I learned all this scrubbing buckets in my first florist job, back in North Carolina.
Birthdays lead here, same as everywhere we deliver, for the students and for the people who've lived on these streets for decades. Graduations and sympathy follow, and our flower arrangements suit both ends of that age range.
Your daughter's first birthday away from home, or your nan's ninetieth, and you're interstate. Send the flowers to wherever they actually live: the share house, a college room, Nan's place. If nobody answers, in our experience the driver leaves the flowers in the shade and rings to say where. Start with birthday flowers for a daughter or for a friend.
In 2008 I took a birthday bunch to a share house by Griffith's Gold Coast campus, and four students in pyjamas came to the door with not one vase between them (they used a saucepan, and it looked lovely, actually). I think of that house whenever an order goes to a street near a uni.
Anna's pick: the 3 Gerberas In A Vase, which arrive already in water. Gerbera stems are hollow and clog fast, so fresh water every second day is the difference between five days and nine.
You're watching the ceremony in the Great Hall at Callaghan on the live stream, a long way from the stage. A delivery on the day can miss them between gowns, guests and photos, so send graduation flowers to where they live the afternoon before, with the ceremony date in the notes, and the flowers can go to the photos with them. A bright mixed bunch suits, with a card like "So proud of you. Wish I was there."
A bunch that gets carried around campus for an hour of photos needs a long drink beforehand. Stand it in water overnight and recut the stems before it leaves the house. Done that way, the Florists Choice Bright Mixed Bunch holds its heads up through the photos.
A funeral notice in the Herald, and a family you can't get to. For a service at St Patrick's on Macquarie Street in Wallsend, or graveside at Sandgate Cemetery, send a wreath or sheath with the start time in the notes. Unsure of the details? Flowers for the family home, a day or two later, are rarely wrong. Flowers won't change what happened, and the family will still remember who sent them. A card can say: "Thinking of you all, with love."
A wreath sits in wet foam, so it keeps drinking at the graveside. A sheath is tied stems with no water, made to go home afterwards and into a vase. Graveside only, go the wreath. Service and then home, go the sheath.
Some orders don't come with an occasion: a grandparent at Jesmond Grove, a friend halfway through exams. Thinking of you flowers or a just because bunch needs no reason. Anna has a view on this one.
Go with the Blue Mist Arrangement. It sits in wet foam inside its own mirrored cube, so nobody needs a vase or scissors, and it fits on a bedside table. Top the foam up with water as it dries out.

Before 2pm on a weekday, a birthday bunch can go out on today's run.
Shop birthday flowers2pm weekdays for same day, which leaves time to make the flowers up and get them there.
10am Saturdays, for the shorter Saturday run.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A share house: a mobile number. On campus: the college and room. Jesmond Grove on Mordue Parade, or SummitCare on Bent Street in Wallsend: the resident's full name and room. John Hunter Hospital: the ward.
In our experience, care homes take flowers at reception and staff carry them through, and hospital flowers go to the ward desk. For a funeral, the start time does the work. Order before 2pm on a weekday and the flowers can be there today.
You'll get an email confirming the order. To change anything, write to [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and one of our team will sort it out. If the person goes quiet afterwards, that's normal, I promise. Students forget to text home.
The order goes to one of our partner florists near Birmingham Gardens, who makes the flowers up on the delivery day. If a flower in the photo isn't in stock, we contact you and you choose again before anything goes out. Then it's a car, an address and a name. Same idea we started with in 2009, minus the fax machine.
After that, it's over to the card you wrote.
