Wards never had a spare vase in my experience. A box brings its own: the stems sit in wet floral foam, a green block that holds water like a sponge, and the whole thing stays steady on a bedside table, then leaves with them at discharge.
Left alone, that water goes stagnant and the stems start rotting from the base, and the first thing anyone sees is heads beginning to droop. Draw the old water out with a baster or a sports bottle and refill it. I learned to press a thumb into the foam: if nothing comes up, it is dry, whatever the top looks like.
Doherty Street First, Then the Lake
These cards start on Doherty Street and finish at an apartment by Lake Kawana. If a ward will not take flowers at all, a gift hamper does the same job.
The Ward Today, or the Couch Next Week
Someone you love is in a bed on Doherty Street and you are not in the chair beside it. If they go home tomorrow, send the get well flowers to the house. For the ward, flowers go to main reception with the patient's full name and ward, and in our experience staff take them up. A card that says "Thinking of you, home soon" is plenty.
Siobhan and I delivered to John Flynn at Tugun, Tweed Hospital and Murwillumbah Hospital ourselves from 2006 to 2009. Siobhan still brings up one Murwillumbah run: thirty-seven degrees, Asha screaming in the back, five minutes to reception, nowhere to park. The car park on Doherty Street is our florist's problem now. Yours is the ward name, because that is what gets the flowers past reception.
Oriental lilies throw scent across a whole room, and in a shared ward the next bed did not ask for it. Roses, carnations and chrysanthemums carry very little and hold up in the warmth. Save the orientals for the house.
Maternity Wants Something Small and Quiet
A baby has arrived at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and you are hours, or a state, away. If the family leaves hospital tomorrow, send the new baby flowers to the house. On the ward, address them to the mother by name; from what our florists have seen, they go to her room, never into the special care nursery.

Keep it compact and keep it clean. Gypsophila drops its little florets all over a bassinet, and a heavy scent sits in a small room, so for a maternity room I put together soft roses and lisianthus in a box. New parents are not changing vase water.
Is the Birthday in One of the Lake Apartments?
It is a birthday, and home is now an apartment by Lake Kawana at Shine Birtinya on Reflection Crescent, with the Opal Kawana Waters care home next door. Say which, because they are two buildings, and put the apartment or room number and a mobile in the notes.
Anna's call: an air-conditioned apartment usually sits in the low twenties, and spray carnations and lisianthus run about a fortnight at that. Their buds keep opening, so the bunch fills out in week two.
Send the One That Suits Any Room
Plenty of orders fit no heading: a nurse at the end of a long run of shifts, a colleague at the health institute, a friend you have not rung in months. Anna has a view on this.
Send a mixed arrangement in a box. It stands up anywhere it is put down and nobody has to find a vase. Ask for low scent in the notes and it suits a ward as well as a lounge room.

Your order goes to one of our partner florists near Birtinya as soon as it is paid, the way every order has since 2009, and they make it from that morning's stock. Siobhan, on the ward name we keep asking for
I took the calls for years, and the hospital orders that went wrong nearly always went wrong the same way (a first name, no ward, a front desk left guessing). That is why you will see us ask for the ward, even when it feels like a nuisance. If they haven't rung yet, well, people in hospital sleep, get moved up a floor, lose the phone charger (always the charger). I used to feel a bit silly sending carnations into a week like that. Then someone would ring to say it was the first thing their dad mentioned when he got home.
Get the ward right and the rest is our job.
