It is your anniversary and they are at work all day. At the house the flowers wait for them. If they teach at the college, the whole staffroom sees them arrive. In our experience a school's front office signs for them and someone walks them over at the next break, so the campus and their full name go on the order, and our anniversary flowers suit either address.

Anna's call: flowers at work are a small public moment, so go a size up and let roses lead, because a proper handful of them reads as romance from across a room. At the house at six they are just as lovely. Fewer people saw them.

Too early and a spray sits in a back room drying out. Too late and the family walks past an empty stand. The florists I worked with rang the funeral director for the window, and for a church service they aimed at about an hour before.

It is their birthday, they live on one of the streets off Nicklin Way, and you cannot tell if anyone will be in. Name a shaded spot in the notes, the carport or the side gate, and that is where the florist tends to leave them. Start with our birthday flowers or the best-selling birthday flowers.

In a warm house with the aircon off, chrysanthemums give ten days or more and carnations keep opening into a second week. Roses are happiest in the coolest room, away from a west window.

Send natives. Leucadendron is one of the longest-lived stems there is and can go a fortnight in a vase if the water stays clean, and a protea head holds its shape long after the soft flowers around it have gone. Top the water up every day, because protea drinks a vase dry. Natives read as neither romantic nor sad, which suits a card that only says hello.
