Bunch or arrangement? In Cairns heat, pick by where it's going
Most of the flowers above come as a bunch or an arrangement, and in Cairns heat that choice matters more than the colour. A bunch is hand-tied and wrapped, and someone at the other end has to find it a vase. An arrangement arrives set in wet foam, water round every stem, ready to put down.
A bunch suits a house where someone is home to put it in water. For a hospital bedside or a school or office desk, send an arrangement, because nobody there keeps a spare vase. A teacher's flowers also face the car home at three, and a car parked in the sun since eight is the hottest place they will spend all day. I learned that at the boutique at Salt in Kingscliff, where anything left in a car over lunch came inside with its softest petals limp.
Below: birthdays, new babies and sympathy, where to send each, and what the notes need. Unsure about a vase at the other end? Choose from our flower arrangements.
Their birthday is today or tomorrow and you won't be there for it. Send the flowers to the house if someone will be in to take them. If they work at Freshwater Christian College, send there instead and put primary or secondary office in the notes; come December, the same goes for thank-you flowers for a teacher.
I learned how school offices work in December 2007, carrying a bunch into Kingscliff High on Oxford Street with Asha on my hip. The teacher was in class until the bell, the office ladies took Asha and forgot the flowers, and I stood at the counter for twenty minutes holding a bunch and no baby. In our experience not much has changed: a school office signs for flowers and holds them until the break.
Anna's pick: the Florists Choice Birthday Bunch for a house, and the Florists Choice Birthday Arrangement for a school desk.
A new baby, and you're reading the news on your phone from somewhere else. Still on the maternity ward at Cairns Hospital? Send the flowers there with the mother's full name and the ward, and in our experience the front desk signs for them and staff take them up. Once mum and baby are home in Brinsmead, the house gets a whole week of the flowers instead of a day or two on the ward. A card that works: "Welcome, little one. We can't wait to meet you." Flowers aren't a cuddle, and they'll still be in that room before you are.
Nothing that sheds, nothing heavily scented, nothing that needs tending. New baby flowers already in water, like Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates, ask nothing of anybody.
You heard about the death second-hand and the funeral is already set. For the service, give the funeral director's name and the time in the notes. The family home takes flowers any day that week, and in my experience they mean more once the visitors have gone. Something short on the card is enough: "Thinking of you all, with love."
Whoever puts them in water that week has a lot on, so it helps that a bunch like the Gorgeous Whites Bunch is two minutes' work. Strip every leaf that would sit under the waterline, because in this warmth submerged leaves turn the water within a day or two and the stems stop drinking.
Some orders have no heading: the neighbour who minded the kids, a friend with a rotten week.
Anna, if you can't choose: the Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch. Soft enough for a hard week, bright enough for a thank-you.
Other ways to shop
In before 2pm on a weekday, delivered this afternoon.
Shop Birthday Bestsellers2pm weekdays, so the florist has the afternoon to make and deliver your order.
10am Saturday, because Saturday is a morning run.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A house: the street number and their mobile. Cairns Hospital: the full name and the ward. The college: their full name, and primary, secondary or kindy office.
At a house, the florist tends to ring that mobile if nobody answers. In our experience the hospital front desk holds flowers until staff take them up, and a school office until the break. In this morning, with them this afternoon.
An email confirms the order, then it goes quiet while the flowers are made and driven out, which is normal (it always feels longer than it is). To change the date, the card or the address, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and Saturday mornings. And if the thank-you text is slow, don't read into it; plenty of people don't pick up the phone until the evening.
From my years on the phones, the orders that came unstuck were nearly always one of two: a house with nobody home and no mobile in the notes, or a school booked on a pupil-free day. A mobile fixes the first. The term calendar fixes the second. If anything arrives wrong, email a photo to that address the same day and we take it up with the florist.
The flowers fade in a week or so. The card tends to stay on the fridge a lot longer.
