Flowers sent to Callaghan go to the University of Newcastle campus, to a residence room or a staff office, and they can be there this afternoon if you order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday. For a student, put their mobile in the notes, as Student Living Reception in West Tower keeps office hours and outside them the driver calls the student down. Choose from our same-day range below, like the 3 Gerberas In A Vase that arrive already in their vase, or call us and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will sort out the building and room with you, which is half the job on a campus.
A uni room in Callaghan has a kettle, a desk and no vase
A wrapped bunch can sit in its paper all afternoon and look fine, right up until the heads drop at the neck that evening. By then the cut ends have dried and the stems have stopped drinking. The fix takes a minute: a couple of centimetres off each stem at about forty-five degrees (a kitchen knife does it), then straight into water, a jug, a big glass, a cut-down water bottle. It's worth a text to them when the flowers land.
Strip every leaf that would sit under the water. Every one. Those leaves rot, the rot clouds the water, and the stems choke on it within days. I saw more good bunches finish early from that one skipped step than from heat. If you doubt there's a jug anywhere in that room, send something that comes in its own vase or box.
Flowers going up University Drive tend to be for a birthday, a graduation or a bad week, and the person sending them is often a long way off. Now and then there are celebration flowers for a finished thesis, too.
They're turning twenty in a room at Callaghan and you're in Dubbo, or Auckland. Send birthday flowers to the residence with its name and the room number, and put their mobile in the notes (our best-selling birthday flowers are a good place to start if you're stuck). I learnt that at Bond University in Robina in 2008: a Saturday, nobody at the desk, and me walking the residence corridors with a birthday bunch and Asha on my hip (she was about one, and heavy) until a girl in pyjamas pointed us to the right door.
No vase in the room means an arrangement. The Florist's Choice Birthday Arrangement With Chocolates sits in wet foam, so the container is the vase. Foam holds its water for three or four days indoors, then wants a little poured into a gap between the stems, or it dries out from the top down.
Three years of their degree, and you can't be in the Great Hall when they cross the stage. Graduation morning at Callaghan means an early start, a gown to collect and a seat to find, so in our experience the ceremony is the one place a delivery won't reach them. Send the graduation flowers to where they're staying the day before, so they can carry them along for the photos, or that afternoon for the celebration after.
Anna's pick: the Bright Bunch + Sparkling. Strong colour holds its own against a black gown in the photos. Pale pastels wash out beside it.
Someone at home has died, or is very ill, and they're stuck in Callaghan in the middle of exams with no way back before the weekend. That's two orders: sympathy flowers to the family home, wherever it is, and thinking-of-you flowers to the student. Keep the student's card short: "Thinking of you. Ring when you can." Flowers won't get them home any sooner, and they'll still be the thing on the desk that says somebody knows.
Anna has a view on this one: Natives Flowers With A Vase, for someone whose mind is somewhere else. It arrives in its own vase, and once the softer flowers finish, woody natives like banksia and leucadendron dry where they stand and keep on a shelf for months.
Exam week, a break-up, the homesick stretch halfway through first semester. None of it has a heading on a website, and all of it is reason enough for just-because flowers.
Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates. It comes in its own vase, so nobody goes hunting for a jug, and cool colours sit quietly in a small room.
More ways to send to campus
Order before 2pm on a weekday and the graduation flowers go out this afternoon.
Graduation FlowersBefore 2pm on a weekday for same-day delivery, so the florist has the afternoon to make the flowers and run them up University Drive. Before 10am on a Saturday, as Saturday runs finish early. Otherwise, choose the day at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Residence: full name, the residence (West Tower, Evatt House, Edwards Hall and so on), room number and mobile. Uni staff: building and room, the Shortland Building say. If they're in John Hunter Hospital or the Calvary Mater instead: full name and the ward.
In our experience, flowers for residents tend to go through Student Living Reception in West Tower on a weekday. It keeps office hours, so on a Saturday the driver rings the student's mobile instead. Offices usually take them at their own reception, and hospitals at the ward desk. Order before 2pm today and it's on campus this afternoon.
Once the order is in you get a confirmation email. To change the address, the card or the day, email [email protected] or ring our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday.
I took the calls myself from 2006 until February 2011, and the question that came most was "did they get there?" They nearly always had. A nineteen-year-old with flowers tells the whole corridor before they think to ring home.
Callaghan is a campus. There is no front door with a number on it. One of our partner florists near Callaghan makes up the flowers that day, and the driver gets a building, a room and a mobile. With those three it's a short job. Without them it's a phone call to you while the flowers sit in the van. If something's wrong when they arrive, send us a photo the same day and we take it up with the florist.
Most flowers last a week or so. The photo of them stays in the group chat for good.
