Andrew and Siobhan replied

Thanks Kymberly. Mums are generous reviewers. Most of them would call a bunch from the servo lovely if it came from one of their kids. So when a mum is properly happy, and you think it worth passing on to us, I take that as the real thing.

Glad it made her day in Cowra.

Cowra frosts from May to September, and the risk for a bunch sits at either end of the day

Anna, qualified florist | on flowers through a Cowra winter

Cowra's summers get the attention, but the months that ask more of a flower are May to September, when the frosts come. Most deliveries land in daylight, so the danger is at either end of the day: a bunch left out on a verandah into the evening, or a tropical stem carried through a cold morning. The cold goes deeper than the petal can take. It can look fine for a few hours, then the edges go glassy and turn brown.

I learned that at the bench in North Carolina, where one cold car park could finish a phalaenopsis orchid. Tropical stems need two wraps, tissue then kraft, for exactly that reason. Once the flowers are inside, winter works for them: in a cool room a rose that gives about a week in warm weather can go ten days or more. Keep the vase away from the heater, though. It dries the air, and the petals start to crisp from the edges in.

Three Orders That Each Need Something Different

Three kinds of order into Cowra need the most thought: a birthday for someone who may be in care, a hospital stay, and a service. If yours is quieter than any of them, our thinking of you flowers cover a lot of ground.

Mum's Birthday Can Land at the House or at Bilyara

Mum is in Cowra, you are not, and it is her birthday. Home or care is the first question. Cowra Retirement Village, which the town calls Bilyara, is one block with several doors, so name the building (Bilyara Hostel, Ganya Cottage, Kalyan Court) and her room or unit number in the notes. Our birthday flowers for Mum suit either address, and for a big number our 80th birthday flowers still read as an occasion in a small room.

Anna: if they are going to the house, keep them away from the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and flowers read it as the signal to finish. Carnations curl. Chrysanthemums do not care.

Is It Cowra Hospital, or Home Already?

Someone has been admitted, and all you have is a text saying which hospital. If they are home already, send it to the house. If not, remember Cowra Hospital moved into a new building in December 2025, so a room number from an old visit will not help. Put their full name and ward in the notes, and in our experience reception takes it through.

Siobhan and I did that reception run ourselves in the shop years. Murwillumbah Hospital, Asha a baby screaming in the back, 37 degrees, five minutes to get a bunch to the desk and not a park in sight. The job in Cowra is the same one: the desk, the name, the ward. For the maternity unit, new baby flowers with "Welcome, little one" on the card are plenty.

Anna, on ward flowers

A box arrangement is its own vase, and in my experience nobody on a ward has spare scissors, so hospital flowers built in a box get set down and stay put. The foam inside holds water for a few days. Top it up from a cup every couple of days and it goes the distance.

Give Us the Service Time and the Funeral Director

The service is set, the family is in Cowra and you are arranging this from further away. Is it for the service, or for the family at home afterwards?

For the service we send to the funeral director with the date and time on the order, and the florist works to that time. Cowra's lawn cemetery, which also holds the Australian and Japanese war graves, is flat turf where a tall vase tips, so a wreath or sheath suits a graveside. Flowers do not change what has happened, and they are still the thing that gets there when you cannot. "Thinking of you all, with love" is enough on the card.

Whites and creams with soft green sit quietly at a service, and white lisianthus holds its shape through a long, warm day. Funeral flowers in that palette look as composed at the graveside as they did when the service began.

If the Occasion Has No Name

Plenty of orders have no heading: a thank-you to a neighbour, a hard week, a cousin who has just moved to town. You do not need a category to send flowers.

Anna's pick: a mixed bunch built on carnation and chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum shrugs off both a heater in July and a hot January day, and the carnation buds keep opening into the second week, so the bunch looks fuller on day ten than on day one.

In before the weekday cutoff and it goes out to Cowra today.

Cutoffs, Notes and Who Signs for It

Cutoffs

2pm weekdays, which leaves our florist time to make it and get it out the same day.
10am Saturdays, because Saturday trading is short.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What the notes need

For Bilyara or Weeroona, the full name, the building where there is more than one, and the room. For the hospital, the full name and ward. For a farm out of town, the road number and a mobile. From May to September, if nobody will be home before dark, name a neighbour or somewhere under cover.

Who takes it

At a house, whoever answers, or a sheltered spot if you give authority to leave. At the care homes and the hospital, reception, in our experience. For a service, the funeral director. Order before 2pm and it is in Cowra this afternoon.

Paid For, Passed On, Made Up

Your order is confirmed, passed to our partner florist in the Cowra area as a paid job, and made up on the day. You do not need to do anything else. To check on it or change the card, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays or Saturday morning, or email [email protected]. If anything is wrong when it lands, a photo the same day gets it fixed while it still can be.

Siobhan, on the mum who does not ring

In the Pottsville garage days, which feel like another life now, the call I remember most after a delivery was never a complaint. It was a daughter asking if it had arrived, because Mum had not rung. Mums take their time, they are busy showing the neighbour. When an order did go wrong it was nearly always the address, a resident moved to another wing or a patient home early, which is why we ask for so much in the notes. Yeah, it is a lot of questions.

Heard nothing by tomorrow and want to know? Ring us and we will find out for you.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Siobhan and I bought a small flower and gift shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff in 2006 and built Lily's Florist from it in 2009. I do not live anywhere near Cowra, and I will not pretend to know its streets. What I know is the system that gets your order to the florist who makes it.

Siobhan and I answer the reviews ourselves, Kym's at the top of this page included. The long version, faxes and all, is on our about Lily's Florist page.
