Funeral flowers to Cringila: why a white wreath is best made the morning of the service
White is the most honest colour in the cool room. It shows every bruise, brown edge and speck of pollen, while a deep red hides them. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, with a white lily wreath I finished a day early. Two lilies opened overnight and dusted the petals around them, and by morning I was pulling marked petals off one at a time.
So I always made white wreaths the morning of the service. The ring underneath is wet foam, which keeps every stem drinking through a long church service. Orthodox families tend to want a round white wreath at the church. A family home suits a low white arrangement sitting in its own water, no vase needed.
Three reasons bring most people here: a birthday, someone in hospital or a funeral, and the flowers end up somewhere different for each. No reason at all? Our thinking of you flowers cover that.
The birthday is today and you're nowhere near it. Birthday flowers here go to a house more often than not, because nearly every home in Cringila is one, and with the steelworks next door, some households sleep through the day.
I learnt about shift houses in 2008 at Condong, opposite the sugar mill. Birthday bunch for the woman of the house. Her husband answered in his footy shorts, an hour into his sleep after a night shift in the crushing season. She was at work. The flowers went in the sink. So put the birthday person's mobile in the notes, and if someone in the house works nights, say which door to use. Our bestselling birthday flowers are the place to start.
Anna's call: a gerbera stem is hollow and folds at the neck once the water inside runs low. The 3 Gerberas In A Vase arrive with their own vase and water, so they hold until someone's up to take them in.
Someone's in hospital and you can't get to the bedside. From Cringila that's usually Wollongong Hospital on Loftus Street or Port Kembla Hospital in Warrawong. In our experience the nurses carry get well flowers in from the ward desk, so the full name and ward in the notes gets them to the right bed. Card idea: "Missing you at Sunday lunch. Get well soon."
In my experience most rooms are shared, so save oriental lilies for home; their scent fills the room. Gerberas and chrysanthemums bring colour with no scent at all, and a boxed hospital arrangement brings its own water.
The funeral notice might read St Kliment's on Keira Street in Port Kembla, Rankins in Warrawong, then Wollongong Lawn Cemetery at Kembla Grange. About one person in seven here is Eastern Orthodox and nearly three in ten are Muslim (2021 census), and the right flowers for each are close to opposites.
For an Orthodox service, in our experience, a wreath goes to the church before the family arrives; put the church and time in the notes. In our experience many Muslim families prefer no flowers at the funeral, so check with the family first and send sympathy flowers to the home afterwards, never to the mosque. Flowers are a small thing against a death, and families still read every card. Try: "Thinking of you all. With love."
White sits well in both traditions. The Gorgeous White Arrangement is low enough for a table already full of plates.
Some orders fit no heading: a thank you to the neighbour who fed the dog, a new job, or just missing someone. Just because flowers need no reason, and Anna has a view on this one.
The Bright Arrangement With Chocolates sits in its own wet foam, so it lasts days on a crowded kitchen bench. The chocolates go first.

This end of the Illawarra isn't new to us. In 2007 and 2008, when we were still the Kingscliff Florist and Gift Shop on Marine Parade, the Illawarra was one of our ten busiest delivery areas: orders taken on the shop phone and sent to florists down there. Our first Illawarra partner florist, in Figtree, came on board in 2008.
If you hear nothing tonight, that's normal. Someone in hospital is tired, and a house after a funeral is full of cousins and plates and nobody near the phone. The thank-you often comes days later. When I was on the phones, the silence was what people worried about most, and it nearly always meant nothing.
