Need flowers delivered to Dolphin Heads today? You can: get a weekday order in before 2pm, or by 10am Saturday, and they arrive this afternoon. Birthday, sympathy or get well, they go to a house, a room at The Resort at Dolphin Heads or a ward in Mackay. Missed the cutoff? Pick a later day at checkout. Choose from our same-day flowers below, like the bestselling Australian Natives Bunch, or call us and our friendly, Australian-based team will order it with you.
What to send to a Dolphin Heads house so it lasts? Natives first
Send natives. Proteas, leucadendron and waxflower have tough, leathery skins and hardly notice the sea air, and leucadendron goes ten days or more in a warm room, in my experience. For a house that lives with its windows open, natives are the safe pick.
Roses and gerberas do beautifully here too, as long as they sit a room back from the breeze. The salt is why: on a sill facing the water it settles on the petals, draws the moisture out, and the edges go papery inside a couple of days. It took me a summer at a boutique florist in Salt Village, Kingscliff, to stop blaming the heat for that.
Birthdays come first, as they do everywhere we deliver, but here we also deliver to guests on holiday at the resort, and to families saying goodbye. Our native flowers suit all three.
You can't be at the table, so the flowers go instead. Most of our birthday flowers here go to houses; if they'll be at work, send them there with the business name. Plenty of homes sit empty all day, so put their mobile in the notes and the driver can ring, or find somewhere shady to leave them. Stuck? Start with the best-selling birthday flowers.
The yellow chrysanthemums in the Bright Bunch + Sparkling will be the last stems standing, about ten days in a warm room, and the fruit bowl doesn't bother them. Recut every stem on an angle before it goes into fresh water; a flat cut sits on the bottom of the vase and the stem can't drink.
They're on holiday for an anniversary or a birthday, and you can't be there. Start with anniversary flowers for a couple, or celebration flowers for a birthday away. In the notes, put the name the room is booked under and their check-out day. In our experience a resort desk looks guests up by booking name, holds the flowers and rings the room.
I learnt that in 2007 at Mantra at Salt in Kingscliff, where Siobhan and I had stayed the night before we bought the shop. The docket for an anniversary bunch had a surname and a room number. The couple had changed rooms. I walked a bunch of lilies twice round the pool in my shop apron before a woman on a sun lounge put her hand up. Reception would have found them in ten seconds. The desk on Beach Road does the same job, which is why the booking name goes in the notes.
Anna's call: a holiday room has a kettle, two glasses and no vase. The Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates comes in its own vase and goes straight on the table, inside, out of the sea air.
The notice says the service is in Mackay and you can't get there. Funeral flowers go to the funeral director, such as Newhaven Funerals on Harbour Road or Whitsunday Funerals on Shakespeare Street, with the name of the person who has died and the service time. Burial at Mount Bassett Cemetery? Mention it; parts of it are lawn, which changes what suits. Sympathy flowers to the house can follow a day or two later. Flowers fix nothing. People still remember who sent them. For the card, "Thinking of you all, with love" is enough.
Turf gives under a tall vase, and by afternoon it's on its side. A wreath lies flat. Whites and greens sit quietly beside the other tributes, and if the person loved colour, the Wreath With Pink Tones does the same job without shouting.
Get well flowers for someone on a ward at Mackay Base, or home from it. A thank-you to the neighbour who fed the cat. Thinking of you flowers from the other side of the country. None of them need a category. Anna has a pick for orders like these.
The Australian Natives Bunch: proteas, pincushions, waxflower and brunia, every one of them happy on a warm ward or in a house by the water. When the rest has finished, the brunia dries on the shelf and stays for months.

A house: their mobile, and somewhere shady if nobody's in. The resort: the booking name and check-out day. A hospital: full name and ward. A funeral: the person's name, the director and the service time.
At The Resort at Dolphin Heads on Beach Road, reception, which in our experience rings the room. At Mackay Base Hospital on Bridge Road or the Mater on Willetts Road, the ward desk. At an aged-care home such as Resthaven on Quarry, the front desk, with the room number. For a funeral, the director, before the service. A same-day order in by 2pm on a weekday is there this afternoon.
We confirm the order by email and send it to our partner florist in Mackay, who makes it up on the delivery day and drives it out to the address. The process hasn't changed much since 2009, apart from losing the fax machine.
To change a detail, email [email protected] or ring our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. If the recipient sends you a photo and something looks wrong, send it to us that day and we put it right.
I was on the phones from 2006 until early 2011, and the call I took most after a delivery was someone sure that silence meant bad news. It almost never did. People on holiday are down on the sand, people who are grieving don't ring anyone for a while, and plenty of mums put the flowers on the bench and get on with dinner (I did). If it's still nagging at you tomorrow, ring our team. Nobody minds.
Most of the time the thank-you just comes late.
