The Doolandella Connection That Started It All

You know those moments that stick with you? It was a Tuesday morning in 2007, I was behind the counter at our shop in Kingscliff, probably my third coffee for the day already, when this lovely older lady walked in. She had that determined look that only comes from a mission involving family. "Can you help me send flowers to my mum in Doolandella?" she asked. I had to grab the Yellow Pages (yeah, the actual book) to even find out where Doolandella was. Turns out it's tucked away in Brisbane's southwest, and back then, finding a florist there felt like finding a needle in a haystack.

That lady, Margaret was her name, ended up becoming a regular for the time we owned the shop. Every month without fail, she'd come in asking us to organise flowers for her mum's birthday, Mother's Day, or just because she was thinking of her. We'd ring around Brisbane florists until we found one who could deliver to Doolandella. It was a proper mission each time, but seeing Margaret's relief when we confirmed the delivery made it worth the effort. Little did we know, she was planting the seed for what would become our entire business model.

Fast forward to today, and Doolandella has become one of those suburbs where we've built something special. Our partner florists in or close to the area aren't just names on a list either, they're part of the community. They know the area like the back of their hand like you do in your home town or suburb, from Forest Lake Boulevard right through to the shops at Blunder Road. When you order flowers for someone in Doolandella, you're not getting something that's travelled overnight from a warehouse. You're getting flowers made fresh that morning by someone who may even shop at the same Woolies as your recipient.

The funny about Doolandella, or at least to me, is how diverse it is. We deliver to young families in those newer estates, established households who've been there since the 90s, and everyone in between. Over the last 18 years our partner florists tell us the most popular deliveries are actually to the local schools (teacher appreciation is huge there, apparently) and to the medical centres along Serviceton Avenue.

Speaking of occasions, Doolandella has taught us that flowers aren't just for the obvious moments. Sure, we do loads of birthday bunches and anniversary arrangements, but some of our most memorable deliveries have been for different reasons entirely.

Mother's Day in Doolandella is absolutely mental, in the best way possible. The mix of cultures there means we're creating everything from traditional English garden style bouquets to bright tropical arrangements that remind people of home countries further north. Our partner florists love it because they get to flex their creative muscles. And those new baby deliveries to the young families? We probably do three or four a week. Pink, blue, yellow (for the surprise or the "we're not telling anyone yet" crowd), you name it.
