Choosing Flowers That Can Wait at a Farmhouse
On a farm the flowers may sit a while before anyone comes up to the house, and heat does its damage before they ever reach a vase. On a hot day a parked van passes forty-five degrees by midday, and an hour in there takes days off the vase, because every ten degrees roughly doubles how fast a cut stem burns through what it has stored. I learned it from a bucket of roses left by a back door one February: by five they'd dropped their heads.
So for a farmhouse, pick stems that sit through a wait on the verandah, like the protea and leucadendron in the Australian Native Arrangement. Roses and gerberas do beautifully too once someone takes them inside, recuts them and gets them into water.
The orders out this way are usually one of three, and each needs something slightly different in the notes. All of them can go as a bunch or as one of our flower arrangements.
The birthday's out on the farm and you're not. Send birthday flowers with a mobile in the notes, and a shady spot in case everyone's out in the paddock.
Andrew learned why on Clothiers Creek Road, back home in the Tweed, in the summer of 2007: nobody home, the car too hot to leave them in, so forty minutes on the verandah with the bunch on his knee and a cattle dog on his foot. The birthday girl was more impressed that the dog hadn't moved.
Anna's call: native flowers keep giving after the birthday. Once the soft stems finish, the leucadendron and banksia dry where they stand and sit on a shelf for months.
Someone from out this way has died, and the service is in Babinda, Innisfail or up in Cairns. Flowers can't stand in for being there, and they still tell the family you would be if you could. Funeral flowers go through the funeral director, so put their name and the service time in the notes. Sympathy flowers for the home can follow a day later. The card can be short: “We're so sorry. Love from all of us.”
At a graveside, a sheath lies flat on the grass and stays put.
They're at the Babinda Multi-Purpose Health Centre on Munro Street, in for a few days or living in the aged-care beds. Hospital flowers go to the front desk either way, and in our experience staff carry them to the room. Put the room in the notes if you know it. For a short stay, get well flowers with “Rest up. See you at home.” on the card say plenty.
Bedside tables are small. The 3 Gerberas In A Vase fits and arrives ready to go, and fresh water every couple of days keeps those hollow stems drinking.
Plenty of orders don't: a thank-you to the neighbour who fed the dogs, a hello after too long.
When you can't decide, the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch covers three favourites at once. Pinch the anthers off the lilies as they open and the pollen stays off the tablecloth.

In my years on the phones, people on the land were never quick to ring and say thanks, so a quiet day after delivery usually just means a busy one.
To check they arrived, call our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected] to change anything before it goes.
The partner florist closest to East Russell builds it on the day. Rural numbers usually sit on a post at the gate, and the house can be a long way up the drive. The orders that went sideways in our phone years nearly always had a number and nothing else. Anything wrong on arrival, send us a photo that day and we fix it.
