Before you send same-day flowers to Enmore: why a stem needs its morning in water

Sydney's flower market at Homebush West opens at 6am on weekdays and 5am on Saturdays, and plenty of what reaches it has travelled dry-packed in cartons. A good florist recuts every stem and leaves it in deep water for a few hours. That's conditioning: the stem drinks back what the trip took out of it.
I learnt it at Salt, in Kingscliff, rushing a bucket of roses into a job straight off the truck. Perfect at noon. Heads down by the next afternoon, because the water never made it up the neck. A stem that has had its few hours in deep water holds its head; a rushed one drops it.

Oriental lilies are glorious at home. In a four-bed room their scent reaches three people who didn't order them. Roses and gerberas carry very little.
Funeral Flowers Go to the Service, Then Home
You've read the notice twice, and the service is in a day or two. Funeral flowers go to wherever the service is held: St Pius' on Edgeware Road for a Requiem Mass, or the chapel the funeral director has booked (Simplicity Funerals is on King Street in Newtown). Put the venue, the service time and the family's surname in the notes. Flowers for the home can follow the week after.
For the card: "Thinking of you all. With love."
Anna's call: whites and soft greens suit a Requiem Mass and a celebrant's service equally well. In low light, pale petals carry right to the back of the room.
If Nothing Above Fits, Send This
A new job, a first lease, a good week, or a reason you'd rather not put in writing. None of those come with rules.
Anna has a pick for those: the Blue Mist Arrangement, from our flower arrangements. White roses and blue delphinium set in wet foam inside a mirrored cube, so there is no vase to find. Tell them to top the foam up with water every second day and it keeps going.
Where the Girls Spend Their Sydney Days
These days, when we come to Sydney, we stay in Enmore. The city is close, Sydney Uni is just up the road, and Newtown is around the corner, which is the important bit for the girls. They will thrift shop Enmore Road and King Street for twelve hours straight if you let them. I carry the bags.

Who takes the flowers in
Whoever answers, and a housemate signing is normal. Hospitals employ more Enmore residents than any other industry (2021 census), so a nurse off nights may be asleep; the mobile lets the florist call instead of knocking. Before the cutoff, it's still today.
