Flower delivery in Fletcher is same day for orders placed before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday, so the flowers can be at the house, the ward or, on a school day, the school office this afternoon. For a teacher at Bishop Tyrrell on Minmi Road, put their name in the notes. Pick our bestselling Australian Natives Bunch from the range below, or call us and our friendly, Australian-based team will help you choose.
Flowers in a Fletcher summer last longest in the coolest room of the house
Heat sets the clock on a vase. Every ten degrees warmer roughly doubles how fast a cut stem burns through its stored sugar, and a January day runs about four degrees hotter at Callaghan than down at Nobbys on the coast, with Fletcher further inland again. Roses do beautifully in a cool room, seven to ten days at about 22 degrees. On a 30-degree kitchen bench with the afternoon sun on it, in my experience, that drops to three to six. Same rose. Keep the vase in the coolest room, away from the west windows, and top the water up daily while the heat lasts. I learned that my first Australian summer, watching a bucket of roses by a shop window open flat before lunch.
More than a quarter of Fletcher is under fifteen, and most families here are a couple with kids. Birthdays come first, as they do across our network, and with this many young families a new baby is never far off. Then there are get well flowers for anyone laid up at John Hunter.
In a house full of kids, a birthday is probably a school day like any other, Mum's included. Put her mobile in the notes, and if she's out on the school run the driver tends to ring and say where the flowers are. Start with birthday flowers for a wife, or, if it's the six-year-old's birthday, the Gerbera Bunch with a teddy and a balloon (Nan, that one's for you).
Anna's tip: gerberas have hollow stems, and dirty water clogs them until the head folds at the neck. If a head starts to nod, recut two centimetres and stand it in shallow warm water for an hour. It comes back.
You're thrilled for them, and nowhere near the hospital, both at once. From Fletcher the birth is often at John Hunter, and in our experience a lot of new mums are home within a day or two, so ask the family where mum and baby will be before you pick the day. If they're still on the ward, add her full name and the maternity unit to the notes, then pick from our new baby flowers. I know the maternity desk from the wrong side: in 2007, heavily pregnant with Asha, I carried a bunch up to maternity at John Flynn in Tugun and the midwife asked where my bag was. I'd only brought the flowers.
Keep new-baby flowers low on scent and low on fuss. A strong perfume fills a small room fast, and new parents aren't changing vase water. An arrangement sits in its own wet foam, so nobody hunts for a vase, and a splash of water every couple of days keeps it drinking.
A funeral notice with a chapel and a time on it, and you can't be there. The service might be at the Pettigrew Family Funerals chapel on Harris Street, Wallsend, or at Newcastle Memorial Park in Beresfield. Put the funeral director and start time in the notes, and order the day before a morning service, since same-day flowers land in the afternoon. Wreaths and sheaths go to the chapel, sympathy flowers for the home to the family. "Thinking of you all" is enough on the card.
White and cream sit quietly in most chapels. Check the family's faith first, though. In my experience a Hindu family looks after the garlands itself, so flowers go to the home after the cremation, and plenty of Muslim families would rather none at the service at all.
No idea what they'd like, or no occasion at all, just a friend who's had a rotten week? That still counts, and thinking of you flowers say so without a speech. "No reason, just thinking of you" does the job on the card.
Anna has a pick for this one: the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch. The lilies open one bud after another, so the vase changes all week. Pinch the anthers off as each lily opens. Dry pollen bonds to fabric, and small hands always find it first.
Other places to start
Order before 2pm on a weekday and the birthday flowers go out today.
Shop Best-Selling Birthday FlowersBefore 2pm on a weekday gives the florist time to make the flowers for the afternoon run. Before 10am on Saturday, because it's a shorter day. Miss the cutoff and you choose the delivery date at checkout. No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A house: their mobile. Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College on Minmi Road: the staff member's name. John Hunter: their full name and the ward. A funeral: the director and the start time.
Whoever answers the door, the Bishop Tyrrell front office, the ward desk at John Hunter, or the funeral director, at Pettigrew in Wallsend or wherever the service is. Aged care, like Wallsend Manor on McNaughton Avenue, usually goes through reception. Order before 2pm on a weekday and they're there today.
A confirmation email lands as soon as the order goes through. To change the card or the address, email [email protected] or call our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on weekdays.
Then, quite often, silence from their end. I took the phones from 2006 to February 2011 and heard "did they even get there?" hundreds of times. They nearly always had. A house with a newborn in it is slow with thank-yous (I'd know).
One of our partner florists near Fletcher makes the flowers on the delivery day and takes them straight out. Nobody home? The driver tends to ring the mobile in the notes and leave the flowers in the shade, and reviewers have thanked us for that call. A west-facing step at 3pm in January is no place for lilies. If anything's wrong when they arrive, get a photo to us the same day and we sort it.
The flowers fade in their own time. If there was a teddy, it stays for years.
