Anna, qualified florist | what I learnt over a bucket of gerberas at Salt
A gerbera stem is hollow and folds at the neck once bacteria clog the base. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, watching the stems in one bucket fold, one after another. In a rinsed vase with the water changed every couple of days, in a cool Canberra house, a gerbera bunch tends to stand for a week to ten days.
If a neck does bend, recut two centimetres at an angle and stand the stem in shallow warm water for an hour. Caught early, it often comes back.
Flowers for Fraser Houses, the School Office and the Chapel
About ninety-six percent of Fraser's homes were houses at the 2021 Census, so most orders end on a front step. Below are birthdays, thank-yous, funerals and hospital stays, with what the notes need for each. If they love the bush, start with our native flowers.
Birthday Flowers for a 70th When You're Interstate
Mum's turning seventy in a house you could draw from memory and you're a flight away, which feels strange on the day (nobody warns you). Put a mobile number in the notes, and say which door the family uses.
The Australian Natives Bunch has been our bestseller since around 2013, and it's the one I'd send.
Anna's tip: if there's banksia or leucadendron in the bunch, keep them once the soft stems have gone. Both dry on a shelf for months.
Thank-You Flowers Need the Teacher's Name in the Notes
A teacher has put up with your child since February, and a card in the school bag no longer feels like enough. Fraser Primary runs from preschool to Year 6, and in our experience schools take thank-you flowers at the office, so put the teacher's name and year level in the notes.

Funeral Flowers for a Belconnen Chapel, or the Family Home
Someone has died, and you're organising flowers between phone calls. The service might be at White Lady Funerals or the Bluegum Chapel at William Cole, both on Nettlefold Street in Belconnen, at St Thomas Aquinas in Charnwood, or at Norwood Park in Mitchell. When I was on the phones, the first thing I asked anyone sending funeral flowers was the start time, so put it in the notes with the funeral director's name. Or send to the family's home. "With love to all of you today" says enough on the card.
Flowers won't make that week any easier, and the family will still remember who sent them. Anna was a florist at Salt in Kingscliff before she joined us, and she has one more thing.
At Salt we timed sympathy work to the hour of the service, so the flowers were at their freshest when the doors opened.
Hospital Stay, New House or Nothing on This List
Plenty of orders don't fit the cards above: a stay in hospital, a new house, a neighbour's rotten month. For North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, flowers tend to go to the ward or reception, so put the ward and the patient's full name in the notes.

What the notes need
A house: a mobile number and the door the family uses. Fraser Primary: the teacher's name and year level. RFBI Holt Masonic Village on Hardwick Crescent, Holt: the resident's room number. North Canberra Hospital, Bruce: the ward and full name. A service: the funeral director and the start time.
Who receives it
Whoever answers the door takes the flowers in. If nobody is home, our florists tend to ring the mobile in the notes before deciding where to leave them.
For a ward, an office or a house still full of boxes, an arrangement arrives ready to stand.
Between the Checkout and the Front Step
Once you've ordered, one of our partner florists near Fraser makes the order up and takes it out on the day you picked. A quiet recipient is normal, and it doesn't mean the flowers didn't arrive.

Andrew, on roses for a villa off Blundell Boulevard
Around 2009 I carried roses to a villa at St Joseph's Village, off Blundell Boulevard in Tweed Heads South. Asha carried the card. The woman sat down to read it, Asha sat beside her, and I stood there holding the roses. Nobody rang the shop to say thanks, and that was fine. Different postcode to Fraser, same job: a step and a card. When a delivery did go wrong in those years, it was nearly always a missing mobile number.
