One of the longest-lasting bunches for a Flynn house, and how to keep it going

Anna, qualified florist | on woody stems and fruit bowls

The Australian Natives Bunch is about the toughest thing you can put in a heated Canberra lounge room, as long as it drinks. A protea can empty a vase in days, and then its leaves blacken while the head looks perfect, so top the vase up every morning. Split the woody stems a few centimetres with secateurs, too, because a clean cut alone won't open them up.

Waxflower, which turns up in a lot of native bunches, is the catch. It's tough on heat and cold, but ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and waxflower reads that as its signal to finish. The first time I saw it, a whole bucket on the bench dropped every floret at once because someone had parked their lunch fruit beside it. Keep waxflower in a different spot from the fruit bowl.

Birthdays, Wards and Farewells Across Flynn

We deliver right across Flynn, and because it's nearly all family houses, the orders tend to be a parent's birthday, someone in a ward in Bruce, or sympathy for the family. Some need no reason at all, and that's what thinking of you flowers are for.

Mum's Birthday, and You're Not in Canberra

You'll ring her on the day, and it's nicer when the flowers land first. Flynn hasn't got a shop of its own, so a quick trip for milk means Charnwood or Kippax, and if she's out when the flowers arrive, let us know where to leave them, the carport or behind the side gate, out of the sun.

For Mum's birthday or an eightieth, Anna would go for the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch. The lilies open a bud at a time, so it looks fuller on day five than day one.

Tell Us Which Hospital in Bruce

You've got a ward number off a text and no idea if it's current (people get moved, it happens). North Canberra Hospital and Calvary Bruce Private share a site, so the notes need the hospital, the ward and their full name, and from what our florists say, the ward desk takes the flowers through from there. For the card, Thinking of you, see you when you're home is plenty, and there are more hospital flowers in the range.

Anna's call: small and low on scent for a shared room. 3 Gerberas In A Vase sits on a bedside tray, gerberas carry next to no perfume, and it comes in its own vase, so nobody's hunting for one.

Sympathy for the Service, or for the House

Someone has died and you're working out where flowers even go. For the service, give us the funeral home or chapel and the service time, William Cole on Nettlefold Street, say, or the chapel at Norwood Park in Mitchell, and in our experience the funeral director places them. Flowers for the home can wait until the visitors thin out. They won't change anything, and the family remembers who sent them.

Anna, on colour

Whites and soft greens sit quietly in a grieving house, where anything bright reads wrong. For the service, a wreath or sheath; for the house, the Gorgeous Whites Bunch.

Still Not Sure What to Send?

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: a new job, a rough week, the neighbour who fed the cat while you were away. For those I'd start with the Florist's Choice range, and there's a version with chocolates if it's that sort of thank you.

Florist's Choice suits that kind of order. There's no theme to match, so the florist chooses the best stems on hand and builds some personality into it, and it reads neither romantic nor sombre.

Two Cutoffs and the Details That Count

When to order

Before 2pm weekdays for same day, so a florist in or close to Flynn can build your order for the afternoon run.
Before 10am Saturday, a shorter day.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Later than that, pick any date at checkout.

What the notes need

Every order: their full name. A house: a mobile, and the carport or side gate if nobody's home. A hospital: which one, and the ward. RFBI Holt Masonic Village on Hardwick Crescent, or Bill McKenzie Gardens in Page: the room number. A service: the funeral home or chapel and the service time.

Who takes it

Whoever answers, or the spot you named. The ward desk or aged-care reception, in our experience. The funeral director, at William Cole or the Norwood Park chapel. In before the cutoff, and it can all happen this afternoon.

Once You've Paid, Here's What Happens

Your order number lands in your inbox straight away, and one of our partner florists near Flynn makes up the flowers on the day you picked. If you want to check on the order (I always did, when I was the one sending), ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on weekdays and on Saturday mornings, or email [email protected]. If they haven't rung you by tonight, that's normal. People say thank you when they're ready, and for some that's the weekend, once things go quiet.

Andrew, on the other Flynn we once delivered to ourselves

John Flynn Private Hospital on Inland Drive, Tugun, was on our run most weeks from 2006 to 2009. Same Reverend Flynn as this suburb. Siobhan and I drove those deliveries ourselves. One morning I stood at the maternity desk holding pink roses for a Sarah. There were two Sarahs on the ward and no surname on the card. Twenty minutes and a phone call later, the right one had them. That's why we ask for the full name. If something arrives wrong, a photo that day and a word with the team is all it takes.

Canberra started ringing our little shop on Marine Parade in Kingscliff in 2007, twenty or thirty calls a month off an old Yellow Pages ad, and by 2008 it was one of our ten busiest delivery areas, which still makes me laugh. I took a lot of those calls myself, usually with Asha on my hip.

There's more of how it all started on about Lily's Florist.
