A hand-tied bunch is built to stand up on its own

A florist's bunch is built in a spiral. Every stem crosses the others at one binding point and fans out below it, so each one reaches the water by itself. Set a properly made bunch down on the bench and it stands up on its own, and the same spiral holds its shape in a plain jug without anybody arranging it.
So keep the tie. Take the wrap off, leave the binding where it is, and recut the stems a couple of centimetres below it, at an angle, straight into water. Cut the tie and the whole thing falls open, and you are rebuilding it stem by stem at the kitchen sink. I tied a lot of these, and the binding point was the first thing I checked on any bunch.

The Greenway, End of Term and a Chapel on Canterbury Road
More than nine Heathmont homes in ten were separate houses at the 2021 census, so the safe spot in the notes matters more here than an intercom name. Our 70th birthday flowers suit a big day at the house.
Unit or Care Home at The Greenway?
Mum lives at Menarock LIFE on The Greenway, and you're not sure whether she's in the care home or one of the units on the same site.
Write care home or unit, then the number and her full name. It used to be Greenway Gardens, and either name can turn up on family paperwork. In our experience reception takes care-home flowers and the staff carry them through. Our thinking-of-you flowers and 90th birthday flowers both suit, with a card like “Thinking of you, Mum. See you Thursday.”
Anna's pick: lisianthus. It looks like a soft rose, carries almost no scent, and the buds open one after another, so the arrangement changes through the week.
Thanking a Teacher at Great Ryrie Primary
The year is nearly over at Great Ryrie Primary, and the class wants to thank the teacher who got them through it.
Put the teacher's full name, the class and the school in the notes, and send it on a school day; in our experience the office takes flowers in and the teacher collects them after the bell. Heathmont College on Waters Grove works the same way, with the year level in place of the class. Our thank-you flowers and daisies suit a classroom desk.

Gerberas and daisies cope with a warm afternoon in a classroom, as long as somebody gives them fresh water at home that night.
Service at White Lady on Canterbury Road
The funeral is at White Lady Funerals on Canterbury Road in Heathmont, or at Heathmont Uniting Church further along the same road.
Give the service time, the family name and which of the two it is, since both sit on Canterbury Road; in our experience the funeral staff have the flowers in place before people arrive. Our funeral flowers and sympathy roses both suit. “With love to all of you today.” If it is a celebration of life rather than a church service, brighter colours are often welcome; ask the family if you are unsure.
White roses open slowly in a cool chapel, so they still look composed at the end of a long service.
Nothing to Mark, Still Worth Sending
The neighbour two doors up has had a hard few weeks, and there is nothing on the calendar to hang a bunch on.
Anna's pick: one of our hand-tied flower bunches. It goes straight into whatever jug is in the cupboard, tie and all, and stands up on its own.

When to order
Before 2pm on weekdays, so the florist can make it from the day's stock and have it at the door that afternoon.
Before 10am on Saturdays, because the Saturday run finishes early.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
What to write
Menarock LIFE on The Greenway: care home or unit, the number and the full name. Maroondah Hospital on Davey Drive, Ringwood East: the ward and full name. White Lady or the Uniting Church on Canterbury Road: service time and family name. A house: a safe spot out of the sun and a mobile.
Who takes it in
Reception at Menarock and the hospital, the school office, the funeral staff, and at a house whoever comes to the door. In by 2pm on a weekday, out the same afternoon.
What Happens Next
We pass the order to a florist close to Heathmont the same day, and it is made from that morning's flowers. If a stem in the photo hasn't come in, the florist swaps like for like on colour and keeps the size.

Siobhan, on the move from the unit to the care home
Some of the orders that stayed with me, from the years I answered the shop phone in Kingscliff, were for a mum or dad who had just moved across a site like the one on The Greenway, out of their own unit and into care (the family still giving the old address out of habit). It is a big move, even when it is only across the garden. Write where they are now, not where they were. Now and then flowers still go to the old unit, and in our experience the staff walk them over.
Flowers won't make the new room feel like home. They do show that somebody knows where they are.
