Flowers Sent to Holt Last Longer When the First Ten Minutes Go Right

In a Canberra winter, a bunch goes from van to porch to heated lounge room inside an hour, and dry air from the heater pulls water out of a petal faster than the stem can replace it. Strip every leaf below the waterline first. Submerged leaves rot and breed bacteria that block the stem, and the heads drop on day three.
Then cut at about forty-five degrees, because a flat cut seals against the vase. Lukewarm water suits a stem that has just come in from the cold, because the stem drinks it more easily. I worked that out at Salt in Kingscliff after a third bucket of drooping stems. You will not be there to do any of this, so a line in the card message helps: cut the stems, lukewarm water.

A funeral notice gives you a church and a time, and the time is what we need. St John the Apostle is on Blackham Street, and the Bluegum Chapel at William Cole Funerals is on Nettlefold Street in Belconnen. Put the service time in the notes for funeral flowers, or choose sympathy flowers for the home for afterwards. Flowers are a small thing against a funeral, and they are still what you send.
Whites, creams and soft greens suit a church because nothing competes, and white lilies open in the first day and keep.
If It's a Hospital Ward, Here Is What the Notes Need
North Canberra Hospital is in Bruce, in the Belconnen district. For hospital flowers, the ward name is what the notes need, and in our experience reception or the ward desk takes it from there. Recovering at home instead? Get well flowers take a street and a number. In 2007 I arrived at Murwillumbah Hospital with Asha screaming in the back of the car, 37 degrees and no park, and a bunch that had to be at reception. Reception took it.
Anna's call: chrysanthemum and pollen-free Asiatic lilies suit a shared ward. They last in dry hospital air, and the scent does not fill the room for the next bed.
