Flowers delivered in Higgins last longer when the stems get their hours in water first
How long a bunch lasts in Higgins is mostly settled before it's built. Most of Canberra's flowers come down overnight from the Sydney Flower Market at Homebush, in refrigerated trucks at about two to four degrees, and a stem off that truck is cold and thirsty. It wants a fresh cut and a few hours in clean water before it goes into anything. Florists call that conditioning, and the ones I worked with did it the moment the boxes came in, well before the day's orders were made up.
I learned what skipping it costs at Salt in Kingscliff, the morning a bucket of roses I rushed into a job hung their heads by evening. Given their hours in water, roses from the same box open and hold. Once the flowers land in Higgins, the best thing your person can do is recut the stems on an angle and change the water every second day.
A mobile that answers, plus a neighbour or a shaded spot if nobody's home. Nearly every Higgins address is a house, so that's usually all it takes.
The townhouse or apartment number and the resident's full name. The Henry on Fullagar Crescent is built on the old Higgins Primary School site, and the street address alone won't find their door.
The hospital, the ward and the patient's name. Canberra's two big public hospitals, North Canberra Hospital in Bruce and Canberra Hospital in Garran, both have maternity wards, so name the right one.
The venue, the start time and the full name of the person who died. The Catholic parish church for Higgins is St John the Apostle on Blackham Street, Holt; the Bluegum Chapel at William Cole Funerals is on Nettlefold Street, Belconnen.
The address gets the van to the right street. The notes get the flowers to the right person.
Across all our orders, everywhere we deliver, birthdays come first and sympathy second. In a suburb of young families like this one, new babies are on the list too, and if it's something else worth marking, our celebration flowers cover it.
The birthday's today, and they're in the family house or, since downsizing, at The Henry. For a house, a mobile in the notes is plenty; for The Henry, add the townhouse or apartment number as well, and that goes for a 60th birthday or a quiet one for Dad (dads get flowers too, and they're secretly pleased).
I learned about numbers the hard way in 2007, carrying a birthday bunch from our Marine Parade shop into Palm Lake Resort on Winders Place, Banora Point, with a name on the docket and no number. Four identical villas and two offers of tea later, the birthday girl opened the last door (she'd watched me the whole way).
For someone who has downsized, an arrangement already sitting in its own vase or foam suits a smaller kitchen. Foam is the flowers' only water, so top it up with a little every second day.
The baby's here and all you've got is a ward number off a text. Still in hospital? Name the hospital (usually North Canberra Hospital in Bruce or Canberra Hospital in Garran), the ward and the mother's full name, and in our experience ward reception takes the flowers in. Home already? New baby flowers a few days late are still welcome, and the same notes work for get-well flowers. On the card: "Welcome, little one. Sleep when you can."
Nothing that sheds, nothing heavily perfumed. An Oriental lily's perfume builds as each bud opens, which is lovely in a big lounge room and a lot in a small one with a newborn. Gerberas carry no scent at all.
The notice gives a venue, a time and a date, and you can't be there. For St John the Apostle in Holt or the Bluegum Chapel in Belconnen, put the venue, start time and the name of the person who died in the notes, and the funeral director usually receives the flowers before the service. A wreath or sheath suits the service; later in the week, send sympathy flowers to the home. "Thinking of you all. With love" is enough. Flowers are a small thing against what's happened, and people still remember who sent them.
Anna's pick for the service: whites and soft greens, in a flat-backed sheath that needs no vase.
Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: a thank-you for the coach after the junior league season at Higgins Oval, or a neighbour who minded the dog. Anna's answer is Florist's Choice. With no script to match, our partner florist near Higgins builds from whatever looks best in the cool room that morning.

A mobile that answers. At The Henry, the townhouse or apartment number. In aged care, such as Kangara Waters in Belconnen or RFBI Holt Masonic Village in Holt, the room. In hospital, the ward. For a funeral, the venue and start time.
At a house, whoever's home, or the neighbour or shaded spot you named. On a ward or in aged care, reception, in our experience. At a funeral, usually the funeral director. Order before the cutoff and it's on today's run.
Once you've paid, the order goes to one of our partner florists near Higgins and the confirmation lands in your inbox (have a look in junk if it hasn't turned up). To check the flowers arrived, ring 1300 360 469 or 02 8090 0577 (same team, and the 02 works from overseas too), 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. Changes go to [email protected].
If your person hasn't rung by the evening the flowers land, that's normal. In my years on the phones (up to early 2011, when Ivy was about to arrive) the worried senders nearly always had a recipient who was fine, just not a phone person.
The notes go to the partner florist word for word, so a townhouse number at The Henry decides which door gets knocked on. Something not right when the flowers arrive? Send us a photo the same day and we'll fix it. When I took the calls, up to 2013, the orders that went astray were nearly always missing a unit or room number. Easy fix. Two seconds in the notes.
