What I Got Wrong About Doorstep Survival

Early on, I built arrangements based on what looked right in the cool room. That was the mistake. A hydrangea looks spectacular at 4 degrees under fluorescent light. Put it in a van without climate control for 25 minutes, then leave it on a bare concrete step at 32 degrees because nobody answered the door. The petals brown at the edges. The whole head droops. A customer sent me a photo once, and I could see the damage from the thumbnail. The recipient thought we had sent them a cheap job. We had not. We had sent them the wrong stems for the conditions.

The feedback from outer-ring deliveries is what changed my process. Stems arrive in Townsville from Rocklea market in Brisbane overnight by air. By the time they reach a doorstep in Kelso, they have been on four legs: freight from Brisbane, cool room storage, the bench, then the longest van run in the cluster. The new builds in River Parks have no mature trees for shade, no deep verandah on a lot of the modern designs. Two heat exposures, back to back. Chrysanthemums give 10 to 14 days even after both. Carnations have waxy petals that resist drying. Proteas barely register the heat. But anything with thin tissue or high water demand does not come back from a January run to the outer suburbs. I stopped recommending hydrangeas for summer deliveries south of Thuringowa after the third complaint. That was not obvious at the start. It is now.

One more thing worth knowing for Kelso. The Indigenous community here is the largest in the Townsville delivery footprint, around 14 per cent. For Sorry Business, native arrangements connect to country: banksia, protea, waxflower. The florist can guide you on what is appropriate if you are unsure.

How a Kelso Order Actually Moves

You order from wherever you are. We route it to a florist in the Townsville area. That florist opens the cool room, picks the stems, and builds the arrangement by hand. Then it goes on the van and heads south. No warehouse. No shipping box. No overnight airport hold. A person and a bench, then a 20-minute drive to a doorstep.

The Suburb on the Old Cattle Country

The suburb is named for Mary and James Kelso, Scottish immigrants who ran cattle country here until the council resumed the best grazing land in 1970 to build the dam. The station went underwater. A residential suburb rose on what was left. The river that fed the cattle now feeds the city's water supply, and the delivery map stretches further south every year.

After You Order

Once the order confirms, we route it to a partner florist covering the Kelso area. They are based in the inner ring and cover Kelso as part of their run south. The build goes on the bench, into the cool room briefly, onto the van. If the street is new and the GPS fails, they know the estate, because they have been delivering there for months. If there is a problem with the address, we call you.

A note from Siobhan

I worry about the first delivery to a brand-new address. Kelso has more of those than anywhere else in our Townsville network: new streets, construction traffic where a garden should be, a front yard that is still topsoil and star pickets. But the person on the run calls when they cannot find the place, and then we call you. Most of the time the bunch is at the door before you finish worrying about it. If your daughter does not ring you straight away, that is normal. New parents with a newborn in a new house have a lot going on. The flowers are on the counter. She saw them. Give it a day.

Order before 2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays, and the flowers are there the same day.
