Flowers Delivered to Kyabram, a Town of 124 Care Beds

You are ordering for a service you cannot get to, usually before anybody has told you where it is. Two funeral homes cover the town, one on Allan Street and one on Albion Street, and both run their own chapels. A Catholic or Orthodox service is still held at the church, so the chapel is not a safe assumption either way. Ask which building and ask what time. A service at 11am wants flowers there by 10, so that one is placed the day before.

I drove funeral flowers myself between 2007 and 2009 around Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads, and they were the one run I never left until the afternoon. You want them in before the family arrives, because carrying flowers past people who are already being seated is the wrong moment for everybody. In a Tweed summer the back of a car was the worst place for them to be waiting. The ones that went wrong had a town written on them and no chapel and no hour. One priest covers Kyabram and Tatura, and the Saturday vigil only runs on the second and fourth weekends, so service times move around. On the card, a name and a relationship is enough. "Thinking of you and your family" has never once been wrong. The flowers are out of that house inside a fortnight. The card gets kept, and it gets read again months later when somebody is sorting through a drawer.

Anna on colour and format: white travels safely across every tradition you will meet in the district, and red is the one to leave alone, because at a funeral it reads as celebration in half the cultures that might be in the room. A wreath or a sheaf is what a lawn cemetery actually uses. Different object, different place. And chrysanthemums are correct at an Italian funeral and wrong in the same family's house the week after, because in that tradition they are cemetery flowers, full stop.

Somebody you know is in the acute wing and you are three hours south with nothing useful to do about it. That is most of the orders through this page. Kyabram District Health Service has one main entrance on Fenaughty Street, with the Urgent Care Centre to its right and a bell outside it. Sheridan Aged Care carries the same street number and is a residence. The GP clinic is further up the same street at 98. Write "acute ward" or write "Sheridan" on the order and the guessing stops.

Give the full patient name and the ward. One thirty bed wing, no published ward numbers, so the name is what matters. Wait until they have a bed. An arrangement that beats the patient out of Urgent Care waits at reception with nobody able to place it. Visiting is published as 8am to 8pm every day, public holidays included, so the drive sets the deadline here. In 2008 I was still doing our own runs with Asha on my hip, and I can see myself outside Murwillumbah Hospital in 37 degrees with five minutes to get flowers to the desk and nowhere to park. Nobody at a reception desk ever minded the baby. They minded an arrangement turning up at eleven when the patient had moved wards at ten.

No potted plants. Soil carries pseudomonas and aspergillus, and watering it becomes somebody's job, which it will not be. Keep the scent down. The Epworth group in Victoria will not have lilies inside any of their hospitals, on pollen grounds. That is their rule and it tells you where the line sits. Carnation, chrysanthemum, unscented roses and lisianthus all clear it, and gerbera does too, though gerbera is a better bet on a ward where staff change the water than in a home where nobody does. Send it as a box, or as a mixed vase arrangement that carries its own water, because in our experience a ward has no spare vase to put it in. The blanket bans came out of wards treating immunocompromised patients. A thirty bed country wing is not that, so treat the scent and the pollen as courtesy to the person in the next bed rather than as a rule. Palliative is the one place I would never hesitate.

The flowers may arrive without her working out who they are from. In a town where more than one in four people are over 65 and both homes run dementia beds, that is a normal Tuesday here. The flowers might mean more to you than they do to her. That is alright. Send them anyway.

Sheridan is on Fenaughty Street, Warramunda Village on Warramunda Drive, so name the resident and name the building. A street on its own has sent more than one arrangement to the wrong desk. Write the card assuming a staff member reads it out loud, so keep it short and put your relationship in it. "Happy 90th Mum, it's Dave, your eldest" is the whole card, and a 90th arrangement built around the number gets a better reaction than something generic. Sheridan runs a twelve bed dementia unit and Warramunda has secure beds, which changes what goes in the room.

Non toxic species only, because residents do sometimes eat the flowers or drink the vase water. Nothing with a bulb, which rules out tulips, ranunculus, anemones and freesias, and that is exactly what a Kyabram July otherwise recommends. Roses, daisy chrysanthemums and lavender are the safe list, because a stem she grew in her own garden fifty years ago gets recognised on a bad day when an exotic one gets ignored. Small enough for a bedside table beside the medication, in something that will not tip. Between May and September ask for alstroemeria in it as well. It is the best value stem on the bench at that time of year and the buds keep opening for a fortnight after the rest has peaked.

Somebody has had a fortnight of it and you want to say so, and there is no button on a website for that. Nearly a third of the households in Kyabram are one person on their own, and a lot of what comes through here is somebody a long way off wanting that person to know they were thought about on an ordinary Tuesday.

Carnation and chrysanthemum led, and let the florist pick the rest. Tell them to keep it off the kitchen bench if there is fruit sitting on it. Chrysanthemum is the most temperature resilient stem in the trade, ten to fourteen days in a thirty degree room, and it ignores ethylene. One thing before you default to it. In an Italian or a Chinese household chrysanthemums read as cemetery flowers, so at a funeral they are right and at a birthday they carry a message you did not write. Roses there. If you want it decided for you: carnation for the frame, chrysanthemum for the mass, and one leucadendron head so it stops reading like a bunch off a shelf, in a box that carries its own water. That is what I would put in a Kyabram room in any month of the year. Or hand it over entirely, because a florist's choice arrangement gets built out of whatever came off the Epping run strongest at half three that morning, which is the bucket nobody has had a chance to leave standing yet.
