White lilies delivered to a Marrickville home, and how to keep them going all week
A white lily arrangement can look better on day five than on day one. Lilies open a bud at a time, so as the first flowers tire the next ones take over, and an Oriental lily in a Sydney lounge room gives you eight days to a fortnight. That suits a house where people keep dropping in for days, like a Vietnamese family’s wake.
The catch is the pollen. Every new bud brings fresh anthers, and once that rusty dust dries it bonds to white petals and white tablecloths alike. Pinch the anthers off while they’re still damp. If some has already landed, don’t wipe it, lift it with sticky tape. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, watching dry pollen streak a white bouquet orange.
The three cards below cover a birthday or name day, someone in care, and a funeral, and any of them can go out the same day. If the person you’re sending to loves lilies, start with our lily range.
Plenty of Marrickville families speak Greek at home, so a name day can matter as much as the birthday. For either, birthday flowers or celebration flowers work the same way: the order needs the person’s full name and a mobile in the notes.
I learnt about name days on 6 December 2007, doing deliveries from our Kingscliff shop. Three orders, three men called Nick, one of them on Leisure Drive, Banora Point. I asked the third Nick whose birthday it was. Nobody’s. It was St Nicholas’ day, the same saint Marrickville’s church on Livingstone Road is named for. After that, I checked the calendar before I asked.
Anna’s call: for a name day, a mixed bunch says celebration better than a single stem. The Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch gives a bit of everything, and if whoever gets it takes two centimetres off the gerbera stems on day three, the heads stay up, because a fresh cut lets the hollow stem drink again.
Someone you love is at Thomas Roseby Lodge on Illawarra Road or Willandra on George Street, and you can’t visit this week. In our experience flowers go to reception and staff take them through, so the resident’s full name and room number are what get the flowers to the right room. Thinking of you flowers suit any week, and a 90th birthday deserves its own.
For the card: “Thinking of you. See you soon.”
Care rooms tend to run warm, and warmth is what shortens a vase. In my experience a rose that gives you a week in a lounge room gives you about half that in a room kept warm all day. The bedside table is crowded too, so go for something compact that arrives ready to sit, like the Blue Mist Arrangement, so nobody hunts for a vase.
You have the funeral notice, a church name, and maybe not the family’s customs. For a Greek Orthodox service at St Nicholas, a white wreath goes to the church, in our experience well before the family arrives; see our wreaths and sheaths. St Brigid’s on Marrickville Road holds Masses in Vietnamese as well as English, and many Vietnamese families hold the wake at home for several days, so sympathy flowers to the house before the funeral are usually right. Put the service time or the wake address in the notes.
Flowers are a small thing beside a death, and families still remember who sent them. For the card: “May their memory be eternal.” or “Thinking of you all.”
Anna’s pick: white, because red and pink read as celebration at a Vietnamese wake. The White Funeral Wreath for the church, and the Gorgeous White Arrangement for the house, because it comes ready to stand through a wake that runs for days.
A new flat off Illawarra Road, a thank-you to the neighbour who fed the cat, or no reason at all. These are the orders people overthink. Anna has a view on this one.
Go the Australian Native Arrangement. Natives like banksia and leucadendron are the stayers, two weeks or more, and the arrangement comes in its own container. Whoever gets it only has to top up the water in the base every couple of days; if it’s sitting in floral foam, the foam dries out well before it looks dry.
More ways to choose
Order before 2pm on a weekday and it goes out on today’s run.
Shop Arrangements Ready for the Table2pm weekdays for same-day delivery, because our florists build in the morning and deliver in the afternoon.
10am Saturday, because the Saturday run is shorter.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother’s Day.
For a unit, the number and the name on the intercom. For Thomas Roseby Lodge or Willandra, the full name and room number. For a funeral, the church and service time, or the wake address.
Whoever is home, a neighbour, or the front desk at a care home or hospital ward, in our experience. Marrickville’s old hospital is the library now, so for someone in hospital, name the hospital and the ward; RPA in Camperdown is one of the closest. If nobody answers, our florists tend to ring the mobile in the notes. Get in before the cutoff and it goes out today.
You get an email confirming the order. One of our partner florists in or close to Marrickville makes it on the date you chose and delivers it that day. Anything wrong when it lands? Email a photo the same day to [email protected], or call 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and we fix it.
Funeral orders were the ones I’d lie awake over, and nearly every one that went wrong went wrong on timing (flowers reaching the house after the family had already left for the church, which is why we ask for the service time). If you hear nothing for a few days, that’s normal, people in the middle of a funeral rarely ring anyone back. Families mention it later. Usually when you least expect it.
That’s the lot. One order, one florist, one delivery.
