Will a Mixed Bunch Last in a Meringandan West House? Pull the First Stem That Fades

Anna, qualified florist | on why a mixed bunch finishes one stem at a time

A mixed bunch doesn't finish all at once, and it isn't built to. Take the Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch. In a lounge room at around twenty degrees, the white roses go first, after a week or so. The purple lisianthus keeps opening new buds after that, and the green spider chrysanthemums can see out a fortnight or more.

The first stem to fade is the one to watch. A dying flower gives off ethylene, a gas the stems beside it read as the signal to finish. So when the roses drop their outer petals, pull them out, recut the rest on an angle and change the water. The bunch gets smaller and carries on for another week or so. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, where one spent stem left in a bucket had everything around it tired by the next morning.

Flowers Delivered to Meringandan West for a Birthday, a Teacher or a Funeral

Here are three orders we see for Meringandan West, and the one thing worth putting in the notes for each. Any of them can go as one of our flower bunches or as an arrangement that's already sitting in water.

Birthday Flowers on a Big Block Need a Mobile Number

It's their birthday, they're out on a block north-west of Toowoomba, and you're not. Put a mobile number in the notes for any birthday flowers going to a house out here, Mum's birthday flowers included, plus a word about the gate if there is one. Some lots in Claybrook Estate on Peters Road run past a hectare and a half, so the front door can be a fair walk in.

I learnt why in 2007 on Duranbah Road, near our shop. Birthday bunch on my lap, two cattle dogs at the gate, windows up, and nothing on the order to ring. I sat there ten minutes until the birthday girl walked down in her gardening gloves and told me the dogs were scared of cars.

Anna's call: if the house might be empty till evening, send an arrangement. The Bright Arrangement With Chocolates is built in wet foam, so it's drinking from the moment it's made and can wait on a bench for hours without flagging.

Thank-You Flowers for a Teacher at Meringandan State School

Somebody got your child through Prep, or through a hard year, and you want to say so properly. Thank-you flowers can go to the teacher's home or to the school on School Road. For the school, put the teacher's name and class in the notes. In our experience the office takes them at the front desk and lets the classroom know.

The 2 Lily Stems In Glass Vase arrives in its own glass vase, which suits a classroom desk with no vase in the cupboard. Pinch off the orange anthers as each lily opens and there's no pollen on anyone's cardigan. In my experience the flower lasts longer for it, too.

Funeral Flowers: a Wreath for the Grave, a Bunch for the House

Someone has died, and the burial is at Meringandan Cemetery on Peters Road or the service is in Toowoomba. Funeral flowers go to the funeral director. Put their name and the service time in the notes (Australian Heritage Funerals on James Street, say, or Burstows on Ruthven Street) and the florist works the delivery time out with them. For the service itself, choose from our wreaths and sheaths. Sympathy flowers for the home land better a day or two later, once the visitors thin out. "Thinking of you all this week" is enough on the card.

A wreath is a small thing against what's happened. Families still notice every one.

Anna, on wreaths at a graveside

A wreath lies flat on the grass, where a vase on a fresh grave tips over. In the Wreath With White & Purple Tones the purple statice dries on the ring, and some families keep it long after the fresh flowers have gone.

Not Sure What to Send? Start With the Blue Mist Arrangement

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: the new family on the next block, a mate who's crook, someone you've been meaning to ring for months. Thinking of you flowers cover most of it, and so do just because flowers. Anna has a view on this.

The Blue Mist Arrangement comes in a flower box, so nobody has to find a vase. Blue, violet and white don't belong to any one occasion, which is the point. The delphinium in it drops its little florets near ripening fruit, so it wants a spot in the lounge, away from the fruit bowl.

More ways to choose

Can't pick? A florist's choice order placed before 2pm on a weekday can be in Meringandan West this afternoon.

Let Our Florist Choose

Cutoff Times, and What to Write for a Gate, a School or a Grave

Same-day times

Before 2pm on a weekday, which gives our partner florists in Toowoomba time to make it and drive it out.
Before 10am on Saturday, because the Saturday run finishes early.
Later than that, you pick the day at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What the notes need

A house: the lot or house number and a mobile. Meringandan State School: the teacher's name and class. A funeral: the funeral director and the service time. Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street: the ward and bed. Carinity Brownesholme on Highfields Road: the room or wing.

Who takes it in

At a house, whoever comes to the door. If there's a chance nobody's home, say in the notes whether it can be left somewhere shady. At the school, the hospital and Brownesholme it tends to go to the front desk or the nurses' station. Order before 2pm and it's in Meringandan West this afternoon.

Siobhan, on the thank-you call that hasn't come yet

I took orders on the phones from 2006 until just before Ivy arrived in February 2011, and the worry I heard most, a day or two after a birthday, was the thank-you call that hadn't come yet. Out on a big block, the flowers can sit on the bench till everyone's in for tea (and then there's tea). They'll ring. Every so often in those years a driver would be standing at a locked gate with nobody to ring, which is why we ask for a mobile. If something isn't right, tell us that day and we'll get the florist onto it.

From there, the flowers are their business.

Who Wrote This, and Why Toowoomba Matters to Us

Andrew and Siobhan Thomson, co-founders of Lily's Florist
Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Siobhan and I bought a flower and gift shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, in 2006, and between 2006 and 2009 we drove thousands of its deliveries ourselves. Toowoomba and the towns around it were among our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008, before the network even had a name.

In 2009 that became Lily's Florist, now more than eight hundred partner florists. The whole story is on our about Lily's Florist page.
