Bunch, Arrangement or Sheath? It Depends How Long the Flowers Wait
Plenty of flowers sent to Glencoe spend a while out of a vase: on a verandah till someone gets home, on a ward desk, at a graveside. An arrangement sits in soaked foam and drinks the whole time. A bunch carries a little water wrapped at the stems and wants a vase soon after it lands. A sheath has wet tissue under its binding, enough for the service and the burial after.
On open lawn, full sun and wind pull that water out fast: in summer, a day or two before the roses soften at the edges, and in a cool, overcast week, three or four. I watched enough sympathy work leave Salt in Kingscliff to know the rose heads go first. If nobody's home till late, send an arrangement. If someone's there to put a bunch straight in water, it's lovely.
Birthday flowers go to the house, sympathy flowers to Bethlehem Lutheran, Glencoe Cemetery or a funeral director in Toowoomba, and get well flowers to a ward in town. Every occupied home in Glencoe at the 2021 Census was a house on its own block, so the florist works from the delivery notes: a mobile, the gate, the driveway. Native flowers go to all three.
It's their birthday and you'd like the flowers there when they get in. Glencoe's median age at the 2021 Census was 43, and one resident in five was 65 or older, so the birthdays out here run from 50ths to 80ths: start with 50th birthday flowers, or the rest of our birthday flowers. On a rural block the number is usually on a post at the road, so add a line about the driveway, and if nobody's home, say where the flowers can sit out of the sun.
Anna's call: the Australian Native Arrangement. It sits in its own wet foam, and woody native stems don't mind an afternoon on a shaded verandah. Skip the with-chocolates versions for a long wait on a verandah; the chocolates won't survive it.
Someone from the district has died and you need to know where flowers are wanted. Funeral flowers go to the funeral director, usually in Toowoomba, or to Bethlehem Lutheran on Gowrie-Glencoe Road, with the service time and the full name in the notes. A week later, sympathy flowers for home go to the house.
Glencoe Cemetery is lawn, and Toowoomba Regional Council's conditions rule out glass, so for the graveside choose from our wreaths and sheaths. I learnt about glass at Tweed Heads Lawn Cemetery in 2007, carrying a tall vase of white lilies to a fresh grave while a man from the council watched. He let me get all the way there before he said anything.
Flowers do nothing for the person who has gone, and the family notices every one. A card can be short: "Thinking of you all. We'll miss them too." Whites and creams sit quietly next to grief. The White Lily & Rose Sheath lies flat on turf, and a vase on soft ground leans, then spills.
They're in hospital in Toowoomba and you've got a name and maybe a ward number off a text. If they're home in a day or two, send get well flowers to the house. If not, send to the ward: Toowoomba's hospitals include St Andrew's on North Street and Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street. Put the full name and ward in the notes; in our experience the ward desk takes the flowers through. A card: "Rest up. The paddocks will keep."
Send something that brings its own water. The Blissful Botanics Arrangement comes boxed in soaked foam, and a spare vase is hard to come by on a ward.
Some orders aren't a birthday, a funeral or a hospital stay: thank-you flowers for the neighbour who fed the chooks, a new job, or just because.
Anna has a view on this one. The Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch has a bit of everything, so it rarely misses, and the lilies keep opening through the week after it arrives. Pinch the orange anthers off as each one opens and they won't stain the tablecloth.

Glencoe QLD 4352 (there are Glencoes in three other states). A mobile, which gate, and the code if it's locked. For a funeral, the service time, the full name and the funeral director, like Burstows on Ruthven Street or Hiram Philp on Herries Street.
Whoever's home, or the shady spot you name. The ward desk at St Andrew's or Toowoomba Hospital. Reception at aged care homes like Salem on Hume Street or Carinity Brownesholme in Highfields. For a burial at Glencoe Cemetery, the funeral director, who in our experience takes the sheath or wreath to the graveside. Order before 2pm on a weekday and the flowers go out that afternoon.
An email confirms the date and the card message. One of our partner florists in Toowoomba, some of them with us more than thirteen years, makes the order up that day and drives it out. If the gate's locked, the florist rings the mobile in the notes.

When I was on the phones, the worried call two days after a delivery was one of the most common, and nearly every time the flowers were on a kitchen table and nobody had rung yet. Out on a block people are outside till dark (or at the fence talking to the neighbour, which takes longer), and after a funeral the family has fifty other calls to make first. They'll ring. It's usually about the card.
