In a Minyama living room built to face the canal, where the vase sits decides how long the reds stay red

Anna, qualified florist | on flowers and a wall of glass

Red and purple petals get their colour from pigments called anthocyanins, and sunlight breaks them down. Put a deep red rose in full afternoon sun and in about forty-eight hours it's dusty pink, fading from the outer petals in, so the bunch goes blotchy, pale on the outside and still red in the middle. I learned that from the display window at the florist I worked at in Salt, Kingscliff. The reds out the front lost their colour by the second afternoon, while the same stock in the cooler out the back held it.

Canal houses tend to put their biggest glass on the water side, which is exactly where everybody wants the flowers, and on plenty of canals that's where the afternoon sun comes in. Put them on the bench or the table a few steps back from the glass. Roses do beautifully there, and the colour lasts as long as the petals do. Sun takes the red. Shade keeps it.

Anniversaries, Birthdays and a Bed at Birtinya

Minyama runs a bit older than most of the coast (the 2021 census put the median age at 53, and about half the households are couples without kids at home), so we've built this page around anniversary roses, birthdays in the sixties and seventies, and the odd hospital bed up the road.

Forty Years Married, and a House Facing the Water

Forty years, or twenty, or the first one since they sold up down south and bought on the canal, and you won't be at the table for it. Send the anniversary flowers to the house, where they'll be waiting when the two of them get home, and put a mobile in the notes, because two people out the back by the water don't always hear the front door.

It's the glass that gets people, though. In 2007 Andrew took an anniversary arrangement from our Marine Parade shop to a canal house on the Isle of Capri, down on the Gold Coast, and the husband said to bring it through to the deck. Andrew walked straight into the sliding door (spotless, completely shut, he'd have sworn it was open). The flowers survived, which is more than you could say for his nose, and by his account the wife laughed so hard she had to sit down. Minyama houses are built the same way, all glass on the water side, and that matters for more than Andrew's face.

Anna's call: red flowers for an anniversary, on the table back from that glass. A dozen roses in one vase drink hard, so top the water up every day. Leave it and the water clouds by the second day, the bacteria coat the cut ends, and the heads start to bow.

In Hospital at Birtinya, or Already Home?

Someone has texted you a ward number, and maybe it's a new knee and maybe nobody's saying much yet. You don't need the diagnosis to send get well flowers. If they're still in, Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the private hospital beside it share Doherty Street in Birtinya, so name the right one, with their full name and the ward. If they're already home, send it there, where there's a vase and a proper table.

In our experience hospital flowers stop at reception first and the staff take them up, sometimes a few hours later, which is normal. For the card, "Thinking of you, hope you're home soon" does the job. Flowers won't mend the knee. They'll still be sitting there when the visitors have gone home.

A ward bed has no vase and nowhere to put one, so go for hospital flowers built in a box. The wet foam inside holds water like a sponge, and the whole thing sits on a tray table without asking anything of the nurses. Keep the scent soft if the room is shared. An oriental lily that's lovely in a lounge room fills a four-bed ward, and the next bed didn't order it.

Send Dad Something Built for the Deck

He moved up the coast for the water and the quiet, he says he doesn't need a thing for his birthday, and he means it. Flowers for a man feel a bit odd to plenty of people, right up until the photo comes through of him grinning next to them (and then Mum claims the vase anyway, which is fine). Birthday flowers for him lean on strong shapes and deeper colours, and if it's his sixtieth, book the 60th birthday flowers ahead for the day itself.

Anna, on flowers for a bloke

Go for native flowers. Protea, banksia and leucadendron have tough leaves that don't mind the air off the canal, and they look like they belong on a deck. The stems are dense, so a clean cut isn't enough. Split the base up a few centimetres, or crush it gently, so the stem can actually drink. Skip that and the protea heads droop long before they should.

Let the Florist Pick

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading, like a thank-you to the neighbour who kept an eye on the house, or hello to a sister you haven't rung in a while. You don't need a category to send something. Anna always had a soft spot for this one.

Florist's Choice was always my favourite to build. I worked from whatever came in best at the market that morning, so every stem was at its peak and nothing had sat in the cooler waiting for an order to suit it. You set the budget, and that's the whole brief.

Or pick a starting point

An anniversary on the canal today? Paid before 2pm on a weekday, the flowers are there this afternoon.

Love and Romance Flowers

Two Cutoffs and One Island Street

The cutoffs

2pm on weekdays, which leaves the florist the afternoon to make your order and get it to Minyama.
10am on Saturday, because the florist's day finishes earlier.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Missed the cutoff? Pick any day you like at checkout.

What the notes need

On Minyama Island the island's name is the street, so the house number and Minyama Island make the whole street address. For any canal house, add a mobile. For a hospital, their full name, the ward, and which of the two on Doherty Street.

Who takes them

Whoever opens the door, a neighbour you name, or the ward reception desk. Without a mobile, a florist at a quiet house has one number left to try, and it's yours. In before 2pm on a weekday, your order goes out this afternoon.

If the Phone Stays Quiet Tonight

Once it's paid you'll get a confirmation email, and that's your sign the order is with the florist. If you've typed the house number wrong, or just remembered Mum's at her sister's in Buderim this week, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays or from 10am Saturday, and one of our team will fix it.

And if nobody rings tonight, that's normal. A lot of people put the flowers in water, send a photo round the family and ring you at the weekend. I know. The quiet is the worst bit, and it feels longer when it's your mum.

Andrew, on the hours after you pay

Here's what happens. The order goes to our partner florist near Minyama as soon as it's paid. They make it that day, write the card from what you typed, and drive it over. If a stem you picked isn't at the market that morning, the florist swaps in something of the same colour and value and notes it on the order. Not ideal. Better than a gap in the bunch. If anything arrives wrong, email us a photo the same day and we sort it from there.

Somewhere along a Minyama canal this afternoon, someone will be moving a vase back from the glass.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Andrew and I bought a little flower and gift shop on Marine Parade in Kingscliff in 2006, and for the first few years we delivered most of it ourselves: John Flynn at Tugun, Tweed Hospital, Byron Bay Hospital, nursing homes, and more waterfront houses than I could count. Between us we took the calls from 2006 to 2013.

In 2009 what started in that shop became Lily's Florist, which has since grown to more than eight hundred partner florists. The rest of the story, prunes and all, is on our about Lily's Florist page.
