Flowers ordered before 2pm on a weekday are delivered in Mirrigan today, to a house, a bed at Ayr Hospital or a room at the Lower Burdekin Home for the Aged on Chippendale Street. The Australian Native Arrangement is one of our most popular and a safe birthday pick, and the Gorgeous Whites Bunch suits a family home after a funeral. Ordering later? Choose any day at checkout. Buy securely online from our same-day range below in a couple of minutes, or call us and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will sort it with you.
Picking flowers that last in a warm house, ward or aged-care room
For a hospital bed or an aged-care room, pick a box arrangement. Nobody there goes looking for scissors and a vase, and with the stems sitting in soaked floral foam, the box is the vase. For a house, a bunch in their own vase does the job. Either way the heat is the catch, and with a box it hides in the foam. Foam is a sponge, and a warm sponge goes stale: bacteria build up on the cut ends, the stems stop drinking, and in my experience the roses drop their heads around day four with the foam still wet.
The first box I watched fail had plenty of water in it. Every two days, draw the old water out with a baster and top it up fresh.
Here is what to send for each, and where it lands: a lounge room, or the hospital and aged-care desks on Chippendale Street. Our native flowers suit every one of them in the heat.
You have a name, the words Ayr Hospital, and maybe a ward number off a text. If they are home in a day or two, send to the house. Otherwise our hospital flowers go to reception and, in our experience, staff take them through. Full name and ward in the notes, then pick from our get well flowers. I carried enough arrangements into Tweed Hospital between 2006 and 2009 to know the front desk is where they stop. On the card: "Thinking of you. Rest up."
Anna's call: keep the scent down in a shared room. The Blissful Botanics Arrangement, white roses and green chrysanthemums, has barely any perfume and shrugs off ward air conditioning.
The birthday is today and you cannot be there. For a house, add a mobile in case nobody is in. If Mum or Dad is in the Lower Burdekin Home for the Aged, put the room number in the notes, because residents notice every arrival. About 2008 I took lilies to Noble Lakeside Park in Kingscliff with Asha, nine months old, campaigning from the car, and half the residents drifted to the glass asking whether that was my little mate. I drove home looking like the intern. In our experience aged care is like that everywhere.
For a bedside table, go low and steady, about one and a half times the height of its container, because a tall one tips when someone reaches past it. The Florists Choice Birthday Arrangement fits that, for an 80th or a 90th.
Someone has died and you are sorting flowers from a distance. Funeral flowers need the funeral director and the service time in the notes. Sympathy flowers for the home land in the week after, when the house goes quiet. "Thinking of you all" is plenty on the card.
The Gorgeous Whites Bunch is the classic call. White shows marks first in the heat, so out of the afternoon sun, with the water changed when it clouds, it stays clean longer.
Plenty of orders fit no heading: a thank you, a new house, a saw-this-and-thought-of-you.
Go with the Australian Native Arrangement. Protea and leucadendron keep their shape for a week or more in a hot house, and the leucadendron dries on a shelf afterwards.

Mirrigan is part of Ayr, so type Ayr 4807 as the suburb. On Chippendale Street, name the hospital or the aged-care home, plus a ward or room.
In our experience, reception takes it in at both Chippendale Street desks. At an empty house our florists tend to leave it in the shade, so a mobile in the notes lets them check first. Order before 2pm and it is there this afternoon.
An email confirms the order, and it goes out on the day you chose. To check on it, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. Changes go to [email protected]. If something is wrong, ring the same day with a photo and we fix it.
On the phones, from 2006 until Ivy arrived in 2011, the worried calls were mostly about someone in hospital or a home who hadn't rung to say thanks (they were usually just tired, or the phone was across the room). The honest complaint I heard most was that the bunch looked smaller than the photo, and fair enough, the photo shows the bigger size. Flowers are a small thing against a hospital stay, and they're still what people mention when they get home.
Silence or not, the card gets read.
