Buy a lily for its closed buds. A North Queensland room without air conditioning sits around 28 to 32 degrees in summer, and that warmth opens each bloom quickly and shortens its life. The buds behind it keep coming, one after another, so a stem with three tight buds is still flowering after the first lily has gone.
Pinch the orange anthers off as each one opens. I learned why at Salt in Kingscliff: wet pollen brushes away, dry pollen bonds to a white shirt for good, so lift it with sticky tape and never wipe. In my experience the flower lasts longer too, because nothing has pollinated it.
Flowers to Parkside for a Birthday, a Funeral or Get Well
Birthdays are what most people send flowers for and sympathy comes next, so those two lead below, with get well after them. In 2007 I was so scared of being late with a white lily sheath for a funeral Mass at St Anthony's in Kingscliff that I turned up an hour and a half early, Asha asleep in her capsule. The funeral director made me a cup of tea. Funeral directors set the timing, and our florists work to it. On the card, "With love, and so very sorry" is enough.
A sheath lies flat on the coffin or the grass, so nothing tips over at the graveside the way a tall vase can.
Name the Ward for Get Well Flowers to Ayr Hospital
Someone's in Ayr Hospital on Chippendale Street, or home and still recovering. If they're still in hospital, put their full name and the ward in the notes; in our experience hospital flowers go to the ward's front desk first and the staff take them through. If discharge is close, send get well flowers to the house instead. On the card: "Hope you're on the mend. Love from all of us."

Keep the perfume low, because an Oriental lily fills a shared room and the next bed didn't ask for it. The Australian Native Arrangement sits in its own foam and carries almost no scent, and woody natives like protea and leucadendron hold up in the warmth.

Nobody Ringing Back Tonight Is Normal
Once you've paid, the florist makes it up for the day you chose and puts it on a run. To check it got there, ring 1300 360 469 between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, or email [email protected]. A quiet phone tonight usually just means they're busy finding a vase.
Andrew, on a hot December and the lilies we got wrong
One December in the Kingscliff shop we made lily posies for a bridal party on a 38 degree day. By the end of the photos the petals were brown and papery. A few days later the bride's mother threw them on the shop floor in front of us. Posies held in the sun all afternoon are a different job from lilies in a vase indoors, and we hadn't known enough to say no. Anything wrong now, ring us or send a photo the same day and we fix it.
Flowers are a small thing next to a funeral or a hospital bed, and people still remember who sent them.
