How We Started Sending Flowers to the Gold Coast

My name is Siobhan. Andrew and I bought a small florist and gift shop in Kingscliff back in 2006. We had no experience in flowers, a baby (Asha) on the way, and our accountant told us in no uncertain terms not to do it. We did it anyway such was our conviction.

The plan was to scale back the flowers and build up the gifting side with organic skincare and baby products. But the previous owner had just paid for a Yellow Pages advertisement. Yeah, the book. Within months we were getting 40+ calls a day for flowers, many of them to places way beyond our little delivery area. Coolangatta, Tweed Heads, then random places like Townsville and Canberra. For a long time we just said sorry, we cannot help.

The $25 Beginning. This is the shop where we sat with $25 in the till, realised we couldn't drive to Townsville or Canberra ourselves, and decided to build a network of partners instead. It’s where the "Molendinar magic" actually started.

Then one cold June day, with about $25 in the till, we looked at each other and thought there has to be something we can do with all these calls. The idea was simple. Find florists in those areas, ask them to help us with orders, charge no fees, just request they add a few extra stems to cover a small commission. Every florist we approached said yes. That model became Lily's Florist in 2009, and today we work with over 800 partner florists across Australia.

The Gold Coast was one of our earliest expansion areas. We have had partner florists servicing suburbs like Molendinar for close to 17 years now.

Why I Know Molendinar Better Than Expected

We still live in Kingscliff, just down the road, and the Gold Coast has been part of our family routine for 20 years. Our girls went to school in Reedy Creek for six years. Ivy plays HDNA netball in Mudgeeraba on Saturday mornings and basketball at Carrara on Friday nights. After Carrara games we usually grab food at Courtside Cafe before heading home. Asha spent four years coaching kids sports at Tallebudgera Rec Centre. We are in Coolangatta multiple times a week for everything from Top Noodle runs to dropping kids at the Strand campus.

But Molendinar? That one crept up on me. Ivy has developed a serious thrift shopping habit and Molendinar has become her hunting ground. The Salvos and Lifeline stores there are at the top of her list. She is after that diamond in the rough, a Princess Polly dress for $8 or a top that still has tags on it. If you know, you know. Most Saturdays after netball in Mudgeeraba we end up driving past Molendinar and she gives me that look. Twenty minutes later I am standing in the aisles while she rifles through racks with the focus of a professional.
