Skip the lilies. Nothing here bans them and I would still skip them. Pollen lifts on a sleeve and travels between rooms, and a ward carrying palliative beds is where nausea runs highest. Chrysanthemums or gerberas, boxed, no scent. Send it in something it can stand in, because from what our florists have seen a ward will not turn up a vase. There is evidence behind the gesture: in a randomised trial, surgical patients in rooms with flowers used fewer painkillers and lower blood pressure.

You know who it is going to and not what they like, and no occasion is doing the choosing for you. Bunches start at $42.95 and delivery is a subsidised. A fair share of what goes up here is the range under sixty dollars, and on a bedside table or a wall niche that scale sits better than something grand. Nobody at the other end is doing arithmetic.

What registers on the doorstep is colour first, then size. Nobody unwraps a bunch and studies a single stem. Send natives. Leucadendron and protea run a fortnight in a vase here where a hybrid tea rose gives seven days, and a box of them survives a front desk, a hot car and a west-facing balcony.
