Palm Beach holds a rather unique place in our Lily's Florist story. Before we had partner florists, before the network of 800+ shops we have today, Palm Beach was quite literally the furthest we could personally drive to deliver flowers from our little shop in Kingscliff. The edge of our world, so to speak.

How Palm Beach Became Part of Our Story

My name is Siobhan, and along with my partner Andrew, we started what would eventually become Lily's Florist back in 2006. We bought a florist and gift shop on Marine Parade in Kingscliff, against our accountant's advice I might add, with a baby on the way and zero experience in flowers. * The physical roots. This is the shop in Kingscliff in 2006, just across the border, where we started saying "yes" to Palm Beach deliveries while our first daughter, Asha, slept in the back seat.

Back then, we did all our own deliveries. Picture this: a tiny shop, a newborn baby in a capsule in the back seat, and us driving flowers around the Tweed and into the Gold Coast ourselves. Palm Beach was about as far north as we could reasonably go and still make it back to the shop before the next order came in. We knew that drive well. Up through Coolangatta, past the airport, and into Palm Beach before turning around and heading home.

What we did not know at the time was that the previous owner had just paid for a Yellow Pages advertisement. Yeah, the book. Within months we were getting 40+ calls a day for flowers, many of them to places way beyond Palm Beach, places like Townsville, Canberra, random towns we had never heard of. For a long time we just said sorry, we cannot help. Until one quiet June day, with about $25 in the till, we looked at each other and thought there has to be a better way.

That thinking led us to approach florists in other areas and ask if they would help us with our flower orders. No fees, just a small commission covered by adding a few extra stems. The response was overwhelming. Every florist we spoke to said yes. And that model, born from desperation in a quiet coastal shop, became Lily's Florist. Palm Beach went from being the edge of our delivery range to just one of hundreds of locations we now service through our partner network.

We Still Spend a Lot of Time in Palm Beach

We still live in Kingscliff, just down the road, and now that the M1 roadworks are finally sorted we find ourselves in Palm Beach more than ever. Our youngest daughter Ivy gets her one on one netball training from Lana at the Palm Beach netball courts. Lana is an incredible coach and Ivy has improved so much under her guidance. The courts themselves have had a beautiful refurbishment recently which makes the early morning sessions a bit more pleasant for those of us standing on the sidelines in the cold.

* A family-run reality. When we talk about sending flowers to Palm Beach, it’s not coming from a corporate office. It's coming from a family that’s lived just down the road for 20 years. Every major decision for Lily's Florist happened at our dinner table or in the car on the way to Ivy’s netball training at the Palm Beach courts. Asha (now graduated) and Ivy have grown up with the scent of lilies and banksias in the air—this is their legacy as much as ours.

Friday nights often see us heading north for Ivy's basketball at Carrara, and on the way home we have become regulars at Guzman y Gomez in Palm Beach. Quick, easy, and the kids are happy. When we have a bit more time, Cafoo Izakaya has become one of our favourite Japanese spots. The food is excellent and the vibe is relaxed, which suits us after a long week.

Here is something not many people know. During COVID, when the border closures made getting the kids to school in Reedy Creek an absolute nightmare, we almost bought a house in Palm Beach. The daily uncertainty of whether we could cross, the permits, the exemptions that changed weekly, it was exhausting. Palm Beach would have solved all of that. We did not end up buying, obviously, but it shows how much the area means to us and how close we came to calling it home.
