The baby's here, you've seen one blurry photo, and you're a long way from Rockhampton. While they're still in, new baby flowers go to the maternity ward at Rockhampton Hospital on Canning Street or Mater Mothers Private, with the ward and Mum's full name in the notes (there's more on that on our hospital flowers page), and in our experience reception takes the flowers through. If they'll be home in Parkhurst by then, send to the house, or pick a delivery day after they're back.

They've just got the keys, and all you have is an address off a text. Housewarming flowers or a birthday, the catch is the same: some streets in Edenbrook and Northridge are newer than the maps, so put a mobile number in the notes. I learnt why in 2007, circling Casuarina, where we lived, for a street the TomTom swore was a paddock (Asha asleep in the back, thank goodness). It was four streets from our rental. In the end I rang the number on the order, and the birthday girl came out to her kerb waving a tea towel at me.

Banksia cones are as good as wood. Keep them from any native bunch when the soft stems finish; they dry where they stand and sit on a bare new shelf for months.

The notice says the Memorial Gardens chapel on Hartington Street, and you can't be there. Funeral flowers go through whoever has the service, Harts Family Funerals on Ford Street or Fitzroy Funerals on Musgrave Street for instance, and if it's a morning service, choose the day before at checkout so the flowers are there in time. For the family, sympathy flowers for home go to the house, and a week or two later is lovely too, once everyone else has gone home. It feels too small a thing, and it's often what they thank you for later. On the card, "Thinking of you all" is enough, or "With love, from all of us."

Anna's call: a sheath lies flat on the casket and needs no vase, which is what the White Lily & Rose Sheath is for. If lilies go to the house afterwards, pinch the anthers off as each one opens. Dry pollen on good black clothes doesn't come out.
