Why natives are what I'd send into Racecourse: they last, then they dry
For a birthday, a thank-you or someone's last shift at the mill, I'd go woody natives. A farewell bunch especially goes home and gets kept going. Banksia, leucadendron and protea carry little water to lose, so when the soft stems around them finish, the natives dry where they stand, and what's left sits on a shelf for months.
In a warm Mackay room a leucadendron gives about two weeks before it even starts drying. Split each woody stem a couple of centimetres at the base; a clean cut alone won't let it drink. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, after a bucket of proteas sulked for two days. Natives are the flowers people forget to throw out.
A birthday, a funeral or a stay in hospital covers most of what gets sent, and each one needs something different in the notes. Boxed flower arrangements suit a workplace or a ward, because nobody there is hunting for a vase.
It's their birthday and you're nowhere near. Through the crush (the cane harvest, from around June to the end of the year) the mill runs around the clock, so if they're on nights, say so in the notes and nobody leans on the doorbell at ten in the morning. Sending to a workmate at the mill? Give the office or department, and a mobile.
I learnt that one the hard way. Magic Millions day, January 2008, I wrote "the racecourse" on the docket for a birthday bunch going to the Gold Coast Turf Club on Racecourse Drive at Bundall, and nothing else. Andrew got sent from gate to gate until a lady in catering took the bunch through for him. The mill is a much bigger site than a racecourse, so put more in the notes than I did.
If natives aren't their thing, the 2 Lily Stems In Glass Vase arrive already drinking, and the buds open one after another over the week. Pinch the orange anthers as each flower opens; dry pollen bonds to a shirt for good.
The funeral notice says the service is in Mackay. Flowers for the service go to the funeral home; flowers for the family go to the house, often a week later. For Whitsunday Funerals on Shakespeare Street or Mackay Funerals on Alfred Street, put the name of the person who has died and the service time in the notes. "Thinking of you all, with love" is enough on the card. Flowers can't do much against the week that family is having, and they still notice who sent them.
Whites and creams sit easiest at a service, and a funeral wreath or sheath can lie flat on a coffin or a grave, where a vase would tip. For the house, chrysanthemums: about ten days in a warm room, often more. Start with the sympathy flowers for home.
A ward number off a text, or they're home with a leg up. Mackay Base Hospital on Bridge Road is the nearest public hospital; the Mater on Willetts Road, North Mackay, is private, so say which, with the patient's full name and ward. In our experience the ward desk takes the flowers in. "Rest up, see you when you're out" does the job. More in our get well flowers.
Anna's call: boxed, like the Bright Arrangement With Chocolates. The foam holds the water and the box is the vase. In a shared room, skip heavy perfume; the next bed didn't ask for it. Start with the hospital flowers.
Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: a thank-you to the neighbour who fed the dog, a new job, a well done. When nobody's sure, Anna has a pick that suits a kitchen bench or a desk.
For a bench or a desk, the Blue Mist Arrangement: white roses, lilies and blue delphinium in a mirrored cube, the water held in the foam. Nothing to unwrap, nothing to find. Keep it away from the fruit bowl, at home or at smoko. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and delphinium answers by dropping every floret at once.
Or browse by colour and occasion

The mill: office or department, and a mobile. A house: a mobile, and whether they're on nights. A service: the name of the person who has died and the service time, for Whitsunday Funerals, Mackay Funerals or City Funerals on Sydney Street. Walkerston Cemetery is monument only, with no lawn to stand a vase on, so choose a wreath or sheath that lies flat. The racecourse itself is in Ooralea, so for the Mackay Turf Club, put Ooralea as the suburb.
The person, or whoever's home. At a big workplace, in our experience, the front office takes the flowers and rings through. At Mackay Base or the Mater, the ward desk. Order before 2pm on a weekday and it goes out today.
Our partner florist in Mackay makes your order up on the delivery day you picked. To change a detail, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. No thank-you call yet is normal. Someone off a night shift is asleep.
In 2007 a Mackay order left our shop on Marine Parade as a Word document, printed and faxed. Yes, faxed. That was under the shop's name; Lily's Florist took over in 2009. Now it goes straight to our partner florist in Mackay. Something not right when it lands? Ring the team and send a photo the same day. We sort it out with the florist.
