The hardest part of sending flowers to someone in Rocky is rarely picking the bunch. You might be in Brisbane, you might be interstate, and the person you are sending to is in a hospital ward on Canning Street, or a private room at the Mater on Ward Street, or a house in Norman Gardens you have never set foot inside. The worry is whether the order will reach the right building in a city you cannot personally drive to today. Most of these orders come from someone who would rather be there in person. Our Rocky partner was the twelfth florist to join the network. That same bench is still building the orders, and we have heard that worry on the phones thousands of times since 2009. The flowers are the easy part. The address is the part we sort.

Rocky looks compact on the order page. From the partner bench, the city is four delivery runs split by the Fitzroy, each one carrying its own timing. The hospitals sit on three different streets, the funeral homes cluster on Alma Street in the CBD, and the river floods slowly enough that the gauge gets watched for a week before anyone calls which crossings are out. Our partner florist in Rockhampton has worked through enough wet seasons to know which routes still hold, and we phone you when the river is up and the cutoff has to move earlier. Thanks Jacqueline. The arrangement not matching the photo is on us. Florists Choice gives the florist latitude to use the best stems available, but latitude is not a licence to drop the standard. When the result does not look right, we need to hear about it, and you told us.

The refund or replacement offer is not a goodwill gesture. It is policy. If it does not look like what you ordered, we fix it. Our Rockhampton florist has been with us a long time and we have spoken to them about this one.

The fact that you are still calling it impressive service after a problem tells me the recovery worked. I would rather not need the recovery at all, but when we do, that is how it should go.

What Twelve Thousand Inbound Calls Taught Me About Sending Flowers Into Rocky

Anna, qualified florist | Took roughly twelve thousand inbound orders from the Pottsville office between 2010 and 2013, and Rockhampton was a regular fixture on the daily list.

People think tropical Queensland means flowers do not last. The reality is the opposite for the right stems. Chrysanthemums, leucadendron, native banksia, and the heavier carnations hold up in a Rockhampton summer better than they do in a Sydney winter. What kills bouquets in this city is heat on an unshaded north-facing veranda at three in the afternoon while the recipient is at work. The forecast number is not the problem. The veranda is. The cellular mechanism is straightforward. At thirty two degrees a soft petal loses water faster than the stem can pull it back through the cut, and the petal edges curl in within two hours. The flower is not dead. It just looks like it is.

Senders confused which hospital, constantly. Rocky has hospitals on three streets, Canning, Ward, and Talford, with Mater running both Private and Mothers' Private out of the Ward Street building. The order needs the building name, the ward, and the room number, in that order. I cannot count the times I had to redirect a caller off Mater Mothers' Private when the patient was actually at Rockhampton Hospital around the corner on Canning. The florist on the bench cannot guess this. The receptions do not share information. Confirm the building before you confirm the bunch.

One last thing about the supply line. The roses, the lilies, the temperate stems travel six hundred and fifteen kilometres in a refrigerated truck from the Brisbane wholesale market. They arrive a day older than what a Brisbane florist pulls off the floor at four in the morning. The freight penalty is real. What compensates is the local tropical production. Gingers, anthuriums, and a lot of the foliage grow in the Capricorn region itself. For a Rocky doorstep in February, that means the stems with the best chance of looking right at delivery are the ones grown within a hundred kilometres of the partner bench. A mixed bunch that pairs imported roses with locally grown tropical greens is the right call for this climate. The local stems carry the heat. The imported stems carry the recognisable shape.

Three Bunches I Would Send to Rockhampton First, and Why

The grid above carries the full range. If I were ringing one of our Rocky senders back about which way to go, these are the three I would put forward. A different one for each pattern that comes up most.

Australian Natives Bunch

Pink proteas, yellow pincushion proteas, white waxflower, silver brunia. Most of what is in this bunch grows in Australia and a fair bit of it within a few hundred kilometres of the partner bench, so half the stems sit out of the 615km truck run from Brisbane that the rest of the range depends on. The waxy bracts on the proteas are practically indestructible at thirty degrees. Three weeks in the vase is standard, two if it is a hot week, and the brunia and protea heads can dry in place and last months on a shelf afterwards. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, native stems can carry meaning that imported roses cannot, but the family should always be asked first. This pick lands across more occasion types than any other in the range. Sympathy where the family wants something grounded rather than white. Get-well to a male recipient. A 60th birthday for the relative who has had every other bouquet at least three times before.

Florists Choice Sympathy Bunch

Sympathy is the second most common reason people order to Rocky after get-well, and the venue varies. Funeral home on Alma Street, family home on the north side, graveside at North Rockhampton Cemetery where the receptacle has to be non-breakable. Birthday and thank-you orders are mostly this one. Bright mixed lets the florist build around what is strong in the cool room that morning. In a Rocky February that means orange gerberas, bright Asiatic lilies, and yellow solidago, with the rose count down because the soft petals struggle on the truck up from Brisbane. In July the rose count goes back up. The stems shift with the season. The bunch character does not. What People Send to Rockhampton, and What Each Order Has to Get Past

The orders that come into Rocky cluster around three patterns: a hospital delivery to one of the campuses on the south side, a sympathy order routed to a funeral home or a family home, and a birthday or thinking-of-you arrival at a house in Norman Gardens, Frenchville, or Park Avenue. Each one needs different decisions before the click. If native flowers have come up as an option in your head already, the answer is probably yes for any of them.

How Does Hospital Delivery Actually Work in Rocky?

Sending flowers to a hospital you have never set foot in, in a city you cannot drive to today, for a person you cannot visit. The campus and the ward are what the order has to land on. Rocky has four hospital services across three streets. Most senders are not expecting that when they ring up.

The sort is the building first, then the ward. Rockhampton Hospital on Canning Street is the public one. Mater Private is on Ward Street, and so is Mater Mothers' Private. Hillcrest Private is on Talford. The address on the order needs the campus, the ward, and the patient's full name. The florist drives to reception. In our experience, the flowers get logged on arrival and a staff member or volunteer carries them to the bedside on the next ward round, usually thirty minutes to three hours later. Get well flowers for Rocky get a hospital-friendly format by default: compact, low fragrance, easy to lift onto a bedside table.

Anna on what works on a ward, and what to leave off

No lilies. The pollen transfers on staff clothing between rooms and the scent is too much in a shared ward. No potted plants either, the soil carries bacteria. Stick to chrysanthemums, gerberas, carnations, lisianthus. If the recipient has Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage and the family has signalled flowers are welcome, natives are often the right call. Most of those grow in or near the Capricorn region itself. They reach the partner bench in their freshest state, which is what you want for a ward where the recipient is already not feeling great. ICU, oncology, burns, haematology, and infectious diseases are all flower-free zones across the network. If the patient is in any of those wards the florist will redirect to the home address or hold the order until discharge. Ring switchboard before you order if you are unsure which ward. The hospital flowers category filters out the formats that do not work on a ward. Hospital flowers can feel small against an actual diagnosis. They are still the right thing to send, for the same reason birthday flowers are. The recipient knows you thought of them, on a day they did not expect to need that.

Sympathy in a City With Four Funeral Homes and Two Cemeteries That Have Different Tribute Rules

Flowers do not fix it. You know that. They say something words cannot say from six hundred kilometres away, and that is enough. The sort here is between funeral home, family home, and graveside, and they are not the same gesture. The funeral homes are spread across Rocky: Tucker & Nankivell and Quality Cremation Services on Alma Street in the CBD, Fitzroy Funerals on Musgrave Street in North Rocky, and Hart's Family Funerals over at Berserker. Sympathy flowers for a funeral need the funeral director's name, the deceased's name, and the service date. Sympathy flowers for the family home are addressed to the family, no service detail required, and the timing is more flexible.

The cemetery rules came up enough on the phones that we keep a list. North Rockhampton Cemetery up on Yaamba Road accepts fresh or artificial flowers in non-breakable receptacles only. A glass vase is non-compliant. Memorial Gardens on Hartington Street accepts fresh or dried in their provided receptacles, nothing else. Tell the florist which cemetery and the format gets matched. Wreaths and sheaths work for both cemeteries and most graveside services because there is no vase to tip. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, check with the family first about flowers and about whether photographs of the deceased on tribute cards are appropriate. If they are, native arrangements connect to Country in a way imported stems do not. The card message can be brief: "Thinking of your family" is enough. There are no right words.

For a Birthday That Is Today and a Person You Cannot Be With

You forgot, or you remembered late, or you knew the date but the morning got away from you. The birthday is today, the person is in Rocky, you are not, and there are about three hours of useful daylight left before the doorstep gets too hot for soft petals. Most birthday orders into Rocky go to a freestanding house with a front veranda, often in Norman Gardens or Park Avenue or Frenchville. There is no apartment-access drama in this city. The drama is whether anyone is home when the driver pulls up. A bunch that arrives late on the day still beats a bunch that arrives the day after, and both beat nothing.

Anna here. If nobody is home, the standard play is to leave the bunch in a covered shaded spot. Front veranda out of the western sun is fine. Back porch is better if the gate is unlocked and the order says so. A bunch that sits in direct afternoon sun on an exposed concrete slab for two hours has lost half its vase life by the time the recipient walks in. Add a delivery note saying where to leave it, and where not to. The driver follows what the order says, not what they assume. Birthday flowers for mum is the most common build, with thinking of you flowers close behind for between-occasion orders. Card message can be short. "Happy birthday from the kids" lands harder than a paragraph.

After You Order

Once your order is in the system, it is matched to our partner florist in Rockhampton and confirmed by email. The florist gets the order details, the address, the card message, and the delivery window. They build the bunch that morning from the cool room and a driver runs the route. You will not hear from the florist directly. You will hear from the recipient when the flowers arrive, or you will not, and the silence is usually nothing to worry about. People get busy. The flowers are there.

If something looks off, the order has not arrived by the end of the day, the recipient says it does not match what you ordered, anything at all, ring 1300 360 469 between 7am and 6pm weekdays or 10am Saturdays. We answer. Email [email protected] works too if it is outside hours.

The system has been doing this since 2009. Roughly seventeen years and over eight hundred partner florists later, the model is the same. You order, we route.
