Walking Darling Street With Asha

A few months back, Andrew took Asha down to Sydney for a weekend. The main event was the Tigers game at Leichhardt Oval (they lost to the Cowboys, but that is a story for another page), but the next morning Andrew had something else in mind. He wanted Asha to see where he spent a fair chunk of his twenties, to get a feel for the inner west the way he knew it.

They started in Balmain and walked the full length of Darling Street, all the way through to Rozelle. Andrew pointed out where things used to be, what had changed, what had somehow stayed exactly the same. When they crossed Victoria Road he stopped and pointed at the Bridge Hotel. That is where he had his 21st, along with his mates Chris and Mikey. Three 21st birthdays at the same pub. Asha thought that was hilarious, the idea of her dad being 21 at all, let alone celebrating it at some pub on a main road in Rozelle.

They ended up at Grey Grus Cafe for a coffee and just talked. Andrew had lived at Balmain Shores just down the road and apparently had a lot to say about those years. The sharehouse stories, the weekends at the pub, the friends who stayed friends and the ones who drifted. Asha sat there taking it in, probably wondering how her dad went from that life to running a flower delivery business from Kingscliff with her mum. Honestly, sometimes we wonder the same thing.

Before Rozelle, Before Flowers

That same Sydney trip, Andrew and Asha also wandered through Lilyfield, which is right next door. Andrew and I used to live in Drummoyne before we left Sydney in 2006, and every Saturday morning without fail we would walk to the Lilyfield markets at the local school. Best bacon and egg rolls on the planet, I still stand by that. We had no idea back then that we would end up buying a flower shop in Kingscliff, nearly going broke, discovering a Yellow Pages ad that changed everything, and eventually building Lily's Florist into what it is now. We were just two people eating bacon and egg rolls, trying to figure out if there was more to life than the 9 to 5 grind.

Turns out there was. But it took a rickety bridge in Northern NSW, a florist shop painted lime green, and a stubborn refusal to listen to our accountant to find it.

Who We Are

I am Siobhan, I run Lily's Florist with Andrew, and we have been at this since 2009. We started with a tiny shop in Kingscliff, knew nothing about flowers, had a newborn, and our accountant explicitly told us not to buy the business. We bought it anyway. Those early years were brutal at times, $20 days in the till, sweating through summer with no aircon, learning everything the hard way. But we figured it out, found our first partner florist in Murwillumbah (I broke one of her gifts the day I walked in, Asha was crawling everywhere), and slowly built a network that now spans over 800 florists across Australia.

We do not have a head office or a marketing department or strategic planning sessions. We have a dinner table where decisions get made, usually while sorting out netball schedules for Asha and Ivy or working out who is driving to basketball on Friday. Our customer service team is based in Armidale NSW, all Australian, and one of them, Anna, is an ex florist who has been with us for over 15 years.

Back in 2013 we signed up with Feefo, a third party review platform that only collects feedback from people who have actually placed an order. We cannot edit reviews, we cannot delete the ones that sting, and we cannot ask family to write nice things. Every single review is verified.

In 2024 we received over 3,000 reviews and more than 2,400 of those were four or five stars. That earned us a Feefo Trusted Service Award. Flowers are subjective, what one person loves another might find too much or not enough, so putting ourselves out there with zero control was a risk. But it keeps us sharp and it keeps us honest.
