Order Flowers to Woodford, Where the Cold Buys You Days

Six hundred and nine metres up, and no counter in town to buy flowers over. Order before 2pm on a weekday and they still get to Woodford that afternoon, made that morning by a florist in or close to the town, never couriered up in a box from another state. After 2pm they go the next working day, Saturday the cutoff is 10am, and nobody delivers on a Sunday. Through June and July we push Woodford orders early, because a frost still on a doorstep at eight in the morning does more damage than any hot afternoon up here. Delivery is $16.95, from the Great Western Highway blocks through to the Vale Road end, long driveways and bush blocks included. Stuck on what to send, or the house is hard to find? Ring 1300 360 469.

Why the cutoff is 2pm

Sourcing, building and driving all have to fit inside it. An order taken at 1.55pm still has the whole mid-mountains run ahead of it.

What the town has not got

No hospital and no cemetery. 98.4% of Woodford dwellings are separate houses, so nearly every order goes to a private door.

What the altitude does

Respiration roughly halves for every 10 degree drop indoors. A cool mountain room is the best thing that happens to a cut stem.

Who makes it

We have no shop in Woodford. It goes to a florist near the town with the stems and space that day. The next section sets out the trade.

Who Puts the Arrangement Together, and Where

We have never had a shop in Woodford. The order goes to one of our partner florists near the town, who builds it the morning it leaves. The honest risk there is a country one: an industry test of orders to regional addresses found 38% arrived nowhere at all, and any network carries more of that exposure in a town this size than in a capital. Your order does not hang on one shop being open the week you need it, and if the florist it lands with cannot take the date, it moves to one who can.

You would assume flowers going ninety kilometres uphill arrive tired. They arrive colder than they left.

Anna, qualified florist | on why the long part of the trip is the safe part

Ninety kilometres and six hundred metres sounds like a long way for a cut flower, and it is the thing people worry about most. Almost all of it is refrigerated. Only the last few kilometres are not, and the mountain at the end of it is the reason they last, not the reason they fail.

The rule underneath it is respiration, which is just the flower burning through its own sugars. Drop the temperature ten degrees and respiration roughly halves. A hybrid tea rose in a Sydney lounge at twenty two degrees gives seven to ten days. The same rose in a cool Woodford one gives ten to fourteen, chrysanthemums eighteen to thirty, leucadendron three to six weeks.

The risk sits in the last leg and on the doorstep. The cold chain ends before the journey does. And a heater in a mountain house is drier than any summer day, which is what curls petal edges. Keep the vase off it, and do not park carnations beside a fruit bowl. Ethylene at a hundred parts per billion finishes them inside a day.

Ninety Kilometres Up, and What Survives the Trip

The climb, and where an order is won or lost on it

Elevations in metres above sea level. Road distance along the Great Western Highway from the Sydney Flower Market at Homebush West. Vase life figures are for a hybrid tea rose at the room temperature shown.

Elevation
What it means for the stem
Sydney Flower Market, Homebush West
about 10 m
Around 170 traders and roughly three quarters of the NSW wholesale trade. Buyers are on the floor from 4am.
Penrith, the bottom of the climb
about 30 m
Stock comes up the highway refrigerated, at 2 to 4 degrees and 85 to 95% humidity, which is the safest a cut stem ever is.
Springwood, halfway up
371 m
The cool room at this end of the line. Stems are recut and rehydrated here, and the arrangement is built on the morning it goes out.
Woodford, the ridge
609 m
Only the last few kilometres are unrefrigerated, and then the house takes over. A rose giving 7 to 10 days in a 22 degree Sydney lounge gives 10 to 14 in a cool one up here.

The short version. The distance costs the flowers almost nothing, because the refrigerated part of the trip is the long part and the exposed part is a few kilometres. The destination then pays you back three or four days on the same stems.

And the season is on your side. June, July and August are the best flower months in Australia. Tulips and ranunculus peak in them, and a Woodford room holds them longer than a city one will.

Send an arrangement to Woodford

You will not see any row of this. The person on the ridge only ever sees the last one, which is the whole point of paying for it.

What Happens After You Press Order

One thing nobody expects. If a stem you have asked for is not on the bench that morning, the florist builds with whatever came up strongest and sends it on time. That is the right call almost every time, and it is why the arrangement can look a little different to the photograph.

Three Reasons People Send Flowers Up Here

Woodford runs about 1,950 people and one famous building, the Academy on the highway, where a four hundred year old Dutch painting sat unnoticed in the collection until 2022. The Academy is also the one address on that strip a driver finds without asking. There is a range under sixty dollars and most of what travels up comes from it.

You Meant to Ring in March and Never Did

The gap gets easier to leave alone the longer it runs, and then it is months, and ringing feels bigger than it is. Most of what comes up here is this, sent by somebody in Sydney who meant to make the ninety minute drive back in autumn.

Thinking of you flowers land mid-morning at the earliest. A third of the workforce here is part-time, so in our experience somebody is home. Ten words on the card beats a long note, and the bunch is on the table for the cup of tea you are not there to have.

On what lasts in a mountains house, Anna knows more than I do.

Carnations. Nobody asks for them and in a cool room they run eighteen to twenty four days. Keep the water clean and the fruit bowl in another room.

A Woodford Funeral Is Usually Not a Church One

You are arranging flowers for somebody else's worst fortnight, from a distance, and the fear is picking wrong in front of a room full of people. Flowers will not fix it. They mark that you tried to.

Two different jobs. Flowers to the family home go within three days of the death. Flowers for the service go to the funeral director with the date on them. Woodford has no cemetery; Lawson is five kilometres east. If the words will not come, "Thinking of you and your family" is always enough.

More than half this town reports no religion, and a default white wreath is the safe pick that is often wrong for a family like that. Ask what the person grew. A garden posy of banksia, grevillea and wattle reads as them, and native stems hold their shape through a long service where soft imported heads collapse.

For a Milestone Birthday, Send It the Day Before

She will tell you not to make a fuss. Make one anyway. The median age here is 44, so the 70th and the 80th come up far more often than the 30th, and those days have visitors in them.

Flowers landing the afternoon before are on the table when the family walks in. If it is for your mum on a bush block alone, the notes are where you say which driveway is hers. The drivers will tell you that line is the difference between a knock and a wasted trip.

Anna on what a milestone bunch actually needs: volume beats rarity. Twenty five ordinary stems read better across a table than nine expensive ones. In a house dropping to fourteen degrees overnight in July, a mixed bunch fades in stages, so day six still looks like something.

Not Sure What to Send?

None of the three above quite fits, or you would sooner not spell out the reason. You do not need a category.

Anna, qualified florist

Send an arrangement if you are unsure. It comes with its own water, so nobody hunts for a vase. To leave the stems to the florist, Florist's Choice gets whatever came off the market strongest that morning. Through winter that is usually tulips or ranunculus, cheapest and best in the months everybody assumes are the worst.

In by 2pm and it lands the same afternoon.

Woodford Delivery Questions, Answered Straight

Nobody is home and the house is off the road. What happens?

The run comes along the Great Western Highway and Woodford is one stop on a long strip, so mid-morning is the earliest window. The florist finds the most sheltered spot they can, which is far easier if you have said where the front door is on a long block.

How late can I order flowers for a service at Lawson?

The day before at the latest, and give us the funeral director and the service time rather than the cemetery gate. In our experience a tribute sitting with the director the previous afternoon is the one that does not go missing.

Can you deliver to someone in care at Springwood?

Yes, and it is a different job to a hospital ward. Springwood is a multi-purpose service, so part of it is somebody's permanent home. The constraint is the room itself, and the florists who work that run keep it small, stable and non-toxic. Familiar flowers beat a magazine cover.

The cold morning problem, and what to do about it

Woodford frosts regularly through June, July and August, with July minimums around one degree. The threat is a carton sitting in frost from eight in the morning until somebody gets home at six, and tropical stems want to stay above about ten degrees to avoid cold shock. If the house is empty all day in winter, ask for a sheltered spot in the notes. Order before 2pm and it is on the ridge this afternoon.

After You Order

An order number reaches you by email within minutes, which confirms it is in our system. To find out whether it landed, ring 1300 360 469 on a weekday between 7am and 6pm, or before 10am Saturday. We can request a photograph, though not every florist takes one.

Siobhan, on the flowers that arrive looking tired

Between 2006 and 2013 I took these calls myself, and the hardest was never the order that failed to turn up. It was the one that arrived and was not quite right. Somebody rings four days later, upset, and by then the flowers are in a bin and there is nothing left to fix. Ring us on the day. And if it is the silence afterwards bothering you, the gesture has done its work in that room whether they have managed to tell you yet or not.

If nobody has texted a photo by the evening, that is normal. Older recipients quite often thank the wrong family member. Give it a day.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

This started on a frosty June day in 2007, in a quiet shop, on under twenty five dollars of sales, with a phone ringing all day for flowers to towns we could not reach. By 2009 seven florists had said yes to covering them. Towns with no shop are the whole reason the business exists. Woodford is one, and I have never been there.

Seventeen years of order data since Lily's Florist started in 2009 tells me where deliveries go wrong, and bush blocks with unmarked driveways are their own category. More on how it all started.
