Flowers can be delivered across Ainslie today, to a home or an aged care room. Order before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, or pick a later date at checkout. For a resident at Goodwin House on Bonney Street, write their full name and, if you have it, the wing or room. Our same-day flowers start at $42.95, just below. Or call us, and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will help you pick something your person will love.
Lilies for Ainslie: why a cool room makes them last
A cool room is about the best thing that can happen to a lily. At fifteen to eighteen degrees an Oriental lily goes twelve days to three weeks, against eight days to a fortnight in a warm lounge, because the cool slows the buds and they open one at a time. If the house is one of the older cottages around Corroboree Park or Wakefield Gardens and the front room stays cool into spring, that's the spot for the lilies.
Pinch the orange anthers off as each bloom opens, while the pollen is still damp. Once it dries it bonds to a shirt, and only sticky tape lifts it. And keep the vase off the sunny sill, because warm water in the sun opens every bud at once.
Every street in Ainslie is a same-day address. Like everywhere we deliver, birthdays come first and sympathy second, new babies arrive all year, and with one in five residents past sixty-five, plenty of thinking of you flowers come here too.
It's Mum's 70th and you're in Melbourne, or Dad has turned ninety at Goodwin House. At a house, if nobody answers, the notes can name the side porch or a neighbour. At Goodwin, add his name and room number; in our experience reception takes the flowers in and staff carry them through.
A 70th at the house can take a big hand-tied bunch. For a 90th in a room at Goodwin, go boxed: the box is the vase, so nobody goes hunting for scissors and a jug.
Someone has died, and the service is at All Saints or in the chapel at Norwood Park in Mitchell. Flowers for the service go to the church or the funeral director, flowers for the family to the house, a few days later if you like. Put the venue and start time in the notes. I learned why in 2007, walking a white sheath through the front doors of St Anthony's in Kingscliff mid-eulogy. Every head turned. Long aisle.
Flowers don't fix any of it, and the family still reads every card. "With love to all of you" will do on the card.
Anna's call: a sheath or a wreath has no vase to knock over, and whites hold beautifully in a cold stone church.
There's a new baby and you won't meet them for weeks. Still in hospital? Name it in the notes, the Centenary Hospital in Garran or North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, with the mother's full name. If the baby is in special care, address the flowers to the mother on her ward, or wait until they're home; in our experience neonatal units don't take flowers. Once mother and baby are home, a day or two after is fine. On the card: "Welcome, little one."
Nothing that sheds pollen or fills the room with scent, and nothing that needs tending at three in the morning. Roses and gerberas are good company in there.
Plenty of orders don't come with an obvious choice: the neighbour who fed the cat, a thank-you, someone you think about more often than you ring. Anna has a view on this.
Send the Australian Natives Bunch. The woody stems in it drink hard, so keep the vase topped up. In a cool Canberra room they go a fortnight or more, and leucadendron, when the bunch has some, dries on a shelf for months.

Bonney Street carries two addresses that need an extra line: All Saints on the Cowper Street corner and Goodwin House at number 35. Say which one, then add the service time or the room number. For a house, the recipient's phone number.
In our experience: at Goodwin House, reception; at Norwood Park or William Cole Funerals in Belconnen, the funeral director's staff, before the service; at a house, whoever answers. Before 2pm on a weekday, it's in Ainslie today.
An order number lands in your inbox straight away, and a florist in or close to Ainslie makes it up on the day. To change anything, email [email protected], or ring the team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays. If the flowers aren't right when they arrive, ring that day and the team will ask for a photo.
In 2007 and 2008 the shop phone on Marine Parade kept ringing for Canberra, thanks to the previous owner's Yellow Pages ad, and we couldn't deliver a single one of those orders. We kept a tally by the register, some days beside takings of less than twenty-five dollars (mostly soap), and Canberra made the top ten. It annoyed us no end at the time, and it's a big part of why Canberra was on our list when we went looking for partner florists. Later on, when something did go wrong, it was nearly always one missing line in the notes (a room number, a service time), which still bugs me. And if Mum hasn't rung to say thanks, that's normal. At ninety, or in the week of a funeral, people don't reach for the phone. Give it a day.
The card usually outlives the flowers. Write it as if it will.
