Flowers ordered before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am on a Saturday, are delivered in Hackett the same day. Later than that, choose a delivery date at checkout. Sending to a house, or to a service at St Margaret's or Holy Cross on Antill Street? Put their mobile, or the congregation and start time, in the notes. Call us and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will help you choose, or buy the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch below online in minutes.
Sending flowers to a Hackett house? The scent comes from the stems in the bunch.
Scent is a choice of stem. Most imported roses were bred for long stems and big heads, so they bring the colour and very little perfume. Stock and freesia bring the smell. The first winter I worked with stock at Salt in Kingscliff, the whole shop smelled of cloves by ten.
Lilies build slowly. An Oriental opens one bud at a time and the fragrance grows with each, so within a week a single stem can fill a room in a Hackett house shut up against the cold. Lovely in the lounge. Keep Orientals out of a small bedroom.
Tap where the flowers are going in or around Hackett, and you get the one line the order notes need for that door.
Write: their mobile, plus a shaded spot or a neighbour's name in case nobody's home. That's what a house needs.
Write: St Margaret's or Holy Cross, the start time, and the name of the person being farewelled. The two congregations share the one church on the corner of Antill Street and Phillip Avenue.
Write: the patient's full name and the ward, for Canberra Hospital in Garran or North Canberra Hospital in Bruce. Patients move floors; a full name follows them.
Write: the resident's full name and room number, for Sir Leslie Morshead Manor in Lyneham or Goodwin House in Ainslie.
Three in four Hackett homes are separate houses, so most of what we send here goes up a garden path. No reason at all? Try our thinking of you flowers.
It's their birthday today and you're nowhere near Hackett. Two in three Hackett families have children, so it's often a mum's or a dad's birthday: birthday flowers for Mum, birthday flowers for him, or 40th birthday flowers if it's a big one.
If nobody answers, our florists tend to leave the flowers somewhere shaded or with a neighbour, as long as the notes say that's fine. Add their mobile number too.
If they're out all day, send an arrangement. It sits in wet foam and keeps drinking on the step until someone gets home. A hand-tied bunch is at its best in a vase within a few hours of arriving.
They're in hospital, the updates are coming by text, and nobody can tell you if they'll be home by Friday.
At Canberra Hospital in Garran or North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, in our experience the flowers stop at the ward desk, so give the patient's full name. Close to discharge? Send get well flowers to the house. A card that works either way: "Thinking of you. See you at home."
Anna's go-to for a ward: the 3 Gerberas In A Vase from our hospital flowers. Gerberas have no scent, which suits a shared room, and the vase comes with them.
You have the funeral notice, the church and the time, and you can't be there.
St Margaret's Uniting and Holy Cross Anglican share one church on the corner of Antill Street and Phillip Avenue, so put the congregation, the start time and the person's name in the notes. Or send sympathy flowers to the home, with a card that says "With love, thinking of you all."
In 2008 I carried a wreath into St John's in Mullumbimby at ten o'clock, the time I'd written on the docket. Ten o'clock was the Wednesday Mass. I stood at the back, wreath and all, right through it, and three lovely ladies asked me afterwards who had died. The funeral was at eleven. Start times matter.
A sheath lies flat on the coffin or a table and needs no vase. After the service it goes home with the family. For a church, I'd send the White Lily & Rose Sheath from our funeral flowers.
Plenty of orders fit no card: a thank you to the friend who watered the garden, a new house, a Tuesday. For those, Anna goes straight to the bunch that sells best everywhere we deliver.
The Australian Natives Bunch: proteas, pincushions, waxflower and brunia. The proteas hold their shape for about a fortnight, but they drink hard, so top the water up every day or two.

A service at Norwood Park in Mitchell: the chapel and the start time. Wherever it's going, a phone number that will answer on the day.
In our experience, aged-care reception signs and a carer takes the flowers to the room. At a house, it's whoever answers. Ordered before the cutoff, it goes out on today's run.
The bit after you pay is the hardest, I think, because you can't see any of it. If you'd like to know the flowers have arrived, ring our team on 1300 360 469 (02 8090 0577 reaches the same team, and works from overseas too), 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and to change a card message or a date, email [email protected].
The order lands, we confirm it, and a florist in or close to Hackett builds it on the delivery day. If it turns up wrong, email us a photo the same day and we fix it. Back when I took the calls, the ones that went wrong were usually ward moves: patient upstairs, flowers still downstairs. Full name, every time.
Flowers from another city never quite feel like enough, and they're still what people mention the next time you ring. Hearing nothing for a day or two is normal (people who are poorly, or grieving, don't rush to the phone).
