Sending flowers to a Campbell unit or aged-care room? Choose them by scent as well as colour
Scent builds in a small room. An Oriental lily opens one bud after another across the week, each adding to the perfume, so by about day four a one-bedroom unit or an aged-care room smells of nothing else. A heater running on a cold Canberra night opens the buds faster. I learned that the first time I left a bucket of orientals in a shut storeroom overnight and walked into the smell next morning.
In a big lounge, orientals are the whole point. For somewhere small, choose gerberas, most market roses, Asiatic lilies or natives: generous to look at, easy on the air.
Birthdays are what we send most, then sympathy, and Campbell adds graduation week every December. For a birthday, the safest start is our best-selling birthday flowers.
You're probably ordering from another city, and the birthday's today. In Campbell that might be a house near the shops, an apartment on Constitution Avenue or a room at Southern Cross Care on White Crescent: put the unit number and a mobile for the apartments, the room number for Southern Cross Care. For a 90th birthday in aged care, a vase or boxed arrangement means nobody on staff goes hunting for a jug.
Anna's pick: the Natives Flowers With A Vase. Next to no scent, and it arrives already standing in water.
A funeral notice, a start time, and you can't be there. For funeral flowers at St Thomas More's on White Crescent or Norwood Park Crematorium in Mitchell, put the venue, the name on the notice and the start time in the notes. Order the day before a morning service and, in our experience, the flowers are there before the family arrives. After the service, a softer bunch to the family home says the same thing. On the card, short is right: "Thinking of you all, with love."
Whites, creams and soft green sit quietly beside a casket, and a sheath like the White Lily & Rose Sheath lies flat on the coffin.
ADFA and Duntroon both graduate in December, out on their parade grounds, with families, some flown in for it, watching. They're working Defence bases with controlled entry, so send graduation flowers to wherever the family is staying, the night before or the morning after.
We learned what December sun does to flowers the hard way, in our Marine Parade shop years. Lily posies for a wedding on a 38 degree day, burnt brown at the edges by the end of the photos, and the bride's mother back in our shop days later, throwing the lot on the floor. She had every right.
Soft petals lose water in full sun faster than the stem can replace it, and they go papery from the edges in. If the flowers are going onto the parade ground, natives and chrysanthemums hold their shape through a hot afternoon. Anything softer waits in a cool room and gets handed over afterwards.
Plenty of orders fit no heading: a new posting at Campbell Park, a neighbour home from hospital. Our bestselling bunch, in every town, is the Australian Natives Bunch, and Anna has a view on it.
It's the one I'd send blind. Woody natives like protea and leucadendron drink hard and keep going for weeks; split the thick stems a few centimetres up from the base so they can take the water.

Once you've paid, one of our partner florists near Campbell makes up your order on the delivery day. You won't see it land, which is the hard part, and if your person hasn't rung by that evening, that's normal; at ninety, or in a funeral week, the phone can wait. Flowers are a small thing to send from another city, and they still end up on the table where every visitor sees them.

In 2007 and 2008 the Kingscliff shop phone rang for Canberra twenty or thirty times a month. We kept a tally, and it put Canberra in our top ten delivery areas. The calls were government retirements, mostly, and once Parliament House, which scared us. The process now: confirm, match to a partner florist near the address, build, deliver. Anything wrong, send us a photo the day it arrives and we sort it out with the florist. At aged care homes the usual fault is a first name and no room number.
