Order Flowers to Clarence, Houses, Wards and Front Desks

Order before 2pm on a weekday and the flowers are at a Clarence door that afternoon, with your name on the card. And the cold you are worried about is the reason they last. Nothing is couriered. It gets made up on the day by a florist in or close to Clarence and driven up the Bells Line of Road. Delivery is $16.95, and that covers the houses along Chifley Road, plus the wards, funeral rooms and aged care desks eight kilometres down the hill, because Clarence has none of its own. After 2pm it is the next working day, Saturday the cutoff is 10am, and there is no Sunday delivery. If the gate has no number on it, and plenty do not, ring 1300 360 469 and we will sort it out between us.

The cutoff, and why

2pm on weekdays. The bunch gets built first and driven second, and both have to fit one afternoon.

Where orders land

Four kinds of address and three sit outside the locality: houses here, plus wards, funeral rooms and front desks eight kilometres downhill.

Where the stems come from

Up from the Sydney flower market at Homebush West, trade buying from 4am, then west by road over the mountains.

Who makes it

No florist in Clarence at all. The order goes to a bench eight kilometres away with room that day. The next section explains that trade.

What "Delivered by a Partner Florist" Means Up Here

We have never had a florist in Clarence and I will not write this page as though we do. The whole business started in that gap, actually. Back in 2006 the phone at our Kingscliff shop would not stop going for towns we could not reach, Taree, Coffs, Canberra, and after about the twentieth call in one day we stopped resenting it and started calling florists in those towns instead. Orange went on early, and Orange is a tableland town at nearly the height Clarence is, close to nine hundred metres. Most of what we know about getting flowers up onto a tableland came out of that one.

So it gets picked on the morning, by us, from whoever has room. If you want one named person who will still know you in five years, a town shop beats us and I will not pretend otherwise. What you get is an order that survives one bench being shut. We move it and we tell you.

Nearly nine hundred metres, and the physics are on your side for nine months of it.

Anna, qualified florist | trained in North Carolina, where the winters actually bite

People send flowers up a mountain and brace for the worst. It is the wrong worry. I learned this trade in North Carolina, then spent fifteen years on a bench in Australia, and a cold room is the single best thing that can happen to a cut flower.

Respiration roughly doubles for every ten degrees you add to a room. A Clarence lounge in June sits about ten under a Sydney one, so the same bunch is ticking over at half the rate. Hydrangea, which I would talk somebody out of for a February delivery on the coast, gives you ten to fourteen days in a cool room up here. Carnation, eighteen to twenty-four days. Leucadendron, three to six weeks, though that is Cape stock, grown on the coast, not off this ridge. Banksia and flannel flower are the two that genuinely grow within a few kilometres of the gate.

Frost is the one part of winter that works against you. A clear July night on that ridge drops under zero, and soft heads left out in it do not come back. The thin dry air up there pulls water out of a stem faster than the coast does, which is the one thing the cold does not cover for. So woody stems if the bunch might wait outside, and crush or split the base three centimetres up before it goes in water, because a woody stem drinks through the cut face and a flat snip seals it shut. Keep it off the fruit bowl too. Ripening fruit gasses off ethylene, which finishes a rose in a day and a chrysanthemum never notices.

Six Things Clarence Does Not Have

Two hundred people, about ninety houses, and not one of the places a flower order normally goes. Every one of them is eight to ten kilometres downhill, which is why the address line on your order does more work here than the bunch does.

Clarence 2790, and the eight kilometres it borrows

Compiled August 2026 from the 2021 ABS locality profile for Clarence (SAL10918), NSW Health facility listings, and current aged care and funeral directory listings. Distances are by road via the Bells Line of Road and Chifley Road.

What an order needs
In Clarence
Nearest one
What that means for your order
A hospital
None
Lithgow Hospital, Col Drewe Drive, about 8 km
This one runs downhill, not up, so a 2pm order lands the same day. Order after admission, not during it.
A funeral director
None
Two in town, about 8 km
Ask the family which rooms before you order. A tribute at the wrong address cannot be re-run the next day.
Aged care
None
Three facilities, 8 to 10 km
Reception signs for it and staff carry it through. A box, with the room number on the order.
A church
None
Anglican and Catholic, about 8 km
A Clarence funeral is held in town, so the service flowers and the house flowers go to two different streets on the same day.
A shop of any kind
None
Main Street, Lithgow, about 8 km
No one up here nips out for flowers. They arrive by van or they do not arrive.
A florist
None
Nearest benches 8 to 10 km
Ten to twelve minutes of road between the bench and the gate. Close enough for same day, far enough that the note matters.

Six things missing, and the flowers still get there. That gap is the entire reason a network like ours exists.

Hand Delivered to Clarence, Start to Finish

No warehouse, no overnight truck. Step two is the one people do not believe: we pay a florist eight kilometres from the door, at their price, on the morning, and the order lands with them as work, not as a favour we are asking for.

Three Reasons Flowers Come Up This Hill

Sympathy is the biggest by a distance, then aged care, then the milestone birthdays. If the budget is what is holding you up, start at flowers under $60 and no one at the other end will know or care.

Two Addresses, and Only One of Them Is a Funeral

You probably found out by text, from someone who assumed you already knew. Funeral rooms or the family home, and the sorting is the only hard part: wreaths and sheaths to the director with the name of the person who died and the service date, condolences to the house any day that week. Our florists find the rooms want tributes in by the day before.

Flowers do not cover what happened and you know that. They mark that someone a long way off stopped and did something. The card outlasts them by years, so keep it short: "Thinking of you and your family" has never once been wrong. If the family is Aboriginal, ask first and take whatever they say as the answer.

White is the convention and it holds up, which is the only reason I push it. Chrysanthemum runs three weeks and does not mind a cold van, where a rose sulks. In July, down the hill, that difference is the whole thing.

She Moved Down to a Room in Town and You Are in Sydney

The house on the ridge got sold, or got to be too much, and now there is a bed, a chair and a windowsill. Thinking-of-you flowers go to the front desk, and from what our florists see it gets logged before the trolley round. "No news, just thinking of you" reads better in a shared room than anything longer.

A box turns up already in water. A wrapped bunch waits in its cellophane until someone finds a vase, and in a two-bed room no one has a spare. Small, low-scent, in something that will not tip. With dementia, familiar does more work than exotic and non-toxic beats both: roses, daisies, lavender. Nothing off a bulb, because bulbs get eaten and vase water gets drunk.

What to Send for a 70th When the House Is Empty Till Six

You cannot get to the table, so the flowers go and sit in your chair until you can. The catch out here is the roster. The orders that come back unfinished are nearly all one picture: a two o'clock knock at a house on nights, no neighbour thirty seconds away to take it in. Authority to leave and a mobile number at checkout fixes it. A 70th is worth twenty seconds of typing.

Anna, qualified florist

A porch at that height is a better place to leave flowers than almost any doorstep in the state, right up until a clear winter night. Woody stems, not soft ones, if it might sit out there. And send something with size to it. Seventy years earns more than six stems.

No Idea What to Send? Say Where It Is Going.

None of the three matched, or you cannot pick. That is most people. Tell us at checkout whether it is a house, a ward, a front desk or funeral rooms, and let the florist build to it. Anna would far sooner that than watch you agonise.

If it were my call I would send the Australian Natives Bunch. Australian-grown, most of it off the coast, it stands a fortnight untouched, and it does not announce a funeral or a birthday, which is exactly the problem you walked in with.

Order by 2pm weekdays or 10am Saturday and it goes today.

Clarence Delivery Questions, Answered Straight

Can you deliver to a ward at Lithgow Hospital?

Yes, about 8 km down the hill. I have done a hospital run myself with a baby howling in the back and nowhere to park, so I know the far end of this. Our florists find it goes front desk, ward clerk, bedside, usually the same shift. Full patient name and ward on the order, and wait until they have a ward: flowers sent while someone is still in emergency have nowhere to go.

What happens if nobody is home in Clarence?

With authority to leave, the florist looks for the lee side of the house, out of the wind. Without it the bunch comes back and someone calls you. Nine months of the year a shaded porch up there sits close to cool-room temperature on its own. June to August is the exception, because a clear night drops under zero, so through winter we want it in a hand.

Can you deliver to the Zig Zag Railway on Chifley Road?

Yes, 840 Chifley Road. It runs seven days now, so visitor cars line that stretch most of the week. Name the person and say whether it is the station or the office.

Fresh Flowers to Clarence, the Ordering Detail

Phone

1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and 10am Saturdays. Or [email protected].

Cutoffs

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays, no Sunday. The Sydney market trades Monday to Saturday morning and nothing moves on a Sunday, so a Sunday delivery would be Saturday stock sitting a day and a half. Monday is the better send.

Delivery

$16.95 flat, from $42.95. Same fee for a scattered ridge address as a city street, so we wear the difference here.

The Clarence delivery note

Plenty of the driveways up here are a mailbox and a cattle grid. Where there is no number to go on, give the nearest cross road or something visible from a van seat. That road runs a very long way and the driver gets one go at it.

Order before 2pm today and it is at the door this afternoon.

After You Order

An order number lands in your inbox within a minute or two and that is what to quote if you call. There is no automatic text on delivery, which I know is the bit people want, so if you want it confirmed, say so and we will go and find out. If what turns up is wrong, send a photo the same day.

Andrew, who built the routing and still argues with it

The one that kept happening up here was the empty house. Before 2013, when I was still taking the calls, the sender would be on at five because the flowers were in the van. Shift work, no note. So we changed how it goes out. No authority to leave on a rural address and the driver holds it while we get on the phone. It costs some people the afternoon they paid for. A birthday bunch on a step until Thursday costs more.

If you hear nothing back, give it a day before you assume the worst. People mean to call and then the day eats them, and anybody grieving or unwell can take a week (my mother-in-law is reliably a fortnight). The gesture has already done its work in that room whether anyone has got round to telling you or not.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

I write the pages for the small places, because they get the worst version of this online. We bought a flower shop at Kingscliff in 2006 that we had no business buying (Asha was seven months off arriving, which tells you how carefully we thought it through). The network came out of a spare bedroom three years after that.

More than 800 partner florists on it now, and still the two of us at the kitchen table arguing about what goes on a page. More on how Lily's Florist works, warts and all.
