Around a Dicky Beach unit, the gum leaves do the heavy lifting

Anna, qualified florist | on building for the sea breeze

People picture soft, pale flowers for a beach address. What decides how any bunch looks on day three in a unit facing the water is its outside edge. Gum, grevillea and leucadendron have woody stems and leathery leaves. Built into the rim of an arrangement, they take the onshore breeze and the salt it carries, and shelter the softer flowers inside. Without that ring, salt dries on a thin petal and the edges go papery within a couple of days.

I learned to build that edge on the bench at Salt in Kingscliff. Soft roses hold beautifully a metre back from the sliding door. Out on the balcony rail, even the tough stems are working hard. Sea salt is patient. It will find a petal.

Birthdays in Care, Beach Weeks and Coming Home

Orders into Dicky Beach tend to go one of three ways: a birthday in care, a week at the beach, or someone home from hospital. For a carer or a neighbour who has carried a lot lately, thank-you flowers fit as well.

Eighty, and Now Living on Coolum Street

Mum or Dad has moved into care, and the birthday still comes round. BlueCare on Coolum Street runs a care home and a retirement village side by side, so the notes need to say which one, plus the name the staff know them by. From what we have seen, flowers go to reception, get signed for, and a carer takes them through. The 80th birthday flowers are a good place to start.

Secure wings run their own doors, which I found out the hard way. Around 2008 I carried an eightieth-birthday bunch into the secure wing of a nursing home in Tweed Heads, followed a nurse through the keypad door, handed the flowers over, and then found the code only worked from one side. Ten minutes between two doors, waving through the glass. The birthday girl asked if I was staying for cake. Coolum Street has a memory support unit of its own, so if that is where they live, say so in the notes and the flowers go to the right door and the right staff.

Anna's steer: familiar flowers suit a care room best. Roses or daisies, in a box arrangement that sits flat, cannot tip and needs no vase. Keep it small enough to share the bedside table with the water jug and the glasses.

An Anniversary at the Holiday Park or a Beach Unit

They are down for a week at the beach, and the anniversary lands in the middle of it. The holiday park on Beerburrum Street has reception open 8am to 5pm, and the cabin or site number in the notes gets the flowers past the desk. For a rented unit by the surf club, add a mobile; people on holiday are usually on the sand. Look for an arrangement in the anniversary range or the love and romance flowers.

A hand-tied bunch is lovely once it is in water, but a holiday cabin rarely has a vase big enough, and left in its wrap on the bench it is thirsty by evening, the heads dropping first. An arrangement brings its water with it. The foam holds it, the stems drink from it, and a splash from a drink bottle every second day carries it through the week.

Send It Home Once They Are Out of Hospital

They are home from Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Birtinya, and the visitors have thinned out. Still on a ward? Send hospital flowers with the ward name, and the florist will usually leave them at that ward's desk. At home, ask in the notes for a knock and a minute's wait, because someone recovering is slow to the door. A card line that works: "Rest up. Dinner is on us Thursday."

Anna, on a bedroom with the door shut

A strongly scented stem fills a small closed room fast, and by the second morning the person in the bed is asking for it to be moved. Gerberas, chrysanthemums and most roses carry very little scent, which suits the bedside. Keep that in mind when you pick from the get-well flowers.

If None of That Fits, Send Lilies

Plenty of orders fit no heading: a new job, a neighbour who fed the cat, a mate who had a rough week. Anna had a standing answer for those, and I have never argued with it.

Lilies. A stem opens one bud after another, so there are new flowers on day five. Pinch the orange anthers off as each one opens: no pollen on the tablecloth, and the bloom tends to go on longer. They are happiest in a lounge where the air moves. Start with the lily range.

In before 2pm on a weekday and it can be in Dicky Beach this afternoon.

Cutoffs

2pm on a weekday for same day, which gives the florist the morning's stock and the afternoon run.
10am on Saturday, a short trading day right down the line: even the Brisbane flower market shuts at midday.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What the notes need

The name the recipient answers to, the building name as well as the unit number, the section or ward for care or hospital, and a mobile someone will pick up.

Who receives it

A reception desk, or whoever opens the door. If nobody does, from what our florists tell us, they ring the mobile before leaving anything. Put it through now and the florist has the whole afternoon to work with.

One Phone Number, One Email, One Photo

Once it is paid, the order goes to a florist in or close to Dicky Beach, who makes it on the delivery day, writes your card out and puts it on the run. There is nothing for you to chase. The whole process fits on a docket.

If you want to check, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected]. If something arrives wrong, send us a photo the same day and it becomes our problem to fix.

Siobhan, on birthdays in care

Don't read anything into a quiet phone. In the shop years I took so many calls from people worried that Mum hadn't rung to say thanks, and nearly always she'd loved them, she just hadn't found the phone (or she had, and rang the lady down the hall instead). Flowers don't make up for not being there. They still sit in the room when you can't. I never liked saying no on the phone, but the birthday orders squeezed in after lunch were the ones that went out rushed, and that is where the cutoff came from. Anything after it now goes on the day you pick at checkout.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Siobhan and I bought a flower and gift shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, in 2006, and until 2009 we delivered most of what we sold ourselves, into nursing homes, John Flynn and Tweed hospitals, holiday units, churches and cemeteries across the Tweed and the southern Gold Coast.

Lily's Florist grew out of the calls from towns we could not reach. It launched in 2009 and now works with more than eight hundred partner florists. The long version is on our About Lily's Florist page.
