Natives delivered to a Weetangera home: the protea drinks the vase down first
When there's a protea in the mix, it's the thirstiest thing in the vase. That big head and its leathery leaves pull water hard. In a Weetangera lounge room with the heater going in July, a protea can drink a vase nearly dry in a couple of days, so top the vase up every morning. I learned that at Salt in Kingscliff, the day I found a bucket of proteas standing in an inch of water.
Leaves going black a few days in give people a fright. That's the head pulling sugar out of its own leaves, and it's normal. Strip them off and the bloom carries on, two to three weeks in a cool room, which a Canberra house is through spring and autumn, and in winter anywhere away from the heater.
Five places a Weetangera order is likely to end up, in the suburb and just over its edge.
Nine in ten Weetangera homes are separate houses (2021 Census), which is why line one comes first. The other four each need their own details, and those details save a second trip.
Flowers sent into Weetangera are mostly for the everyday, important reasons: a birthday at the family home, a teacher at the end of term, a family after a funeral. If you're stuck, our hand-tied bunches are an easy place to start.
You'll ring to say happy birthday from somewhere else, and you'd like the flowers there when you do. Add a mobile and a shaded spot by the door to the notes (birthday mornings have a way of turning into a walk up the Pinnacle or a long coffee somewhere). Every birthday bunch carries your card, and if it's Dad's turn, flowers for him are less awkward than you'd think.
Anna's pick: the Australian Native Arrangement. It brings its own container, so nobody goes hunting for a vase, and the wet foam inside is the water supply. Top the foam up every day or two, daily if there's a protea in it, and it goes the distance.
End of term, a teacher who got your child through the year, and a card written in a minute. School flowers tend to stop at the front office first, so for Weetangera Primary put the teacher's full name and class in the notes. I learned why in December 2007, carrying a thank-you bunch from our Marine Parade shop into Kingscliff Public School on Orient Street. I'd taken the order on the phone and written "For Jenny" on the card. The office had three. A Year 6 farewell works the same way, with our graduation flowers.
Lilies open bud by bud, so the 2 Lily Stems In Glass Vase keep opening after school's out, and the vase comes with them. Pinch the orange anthers off as each one opens, because dry pollen marks a shirt for good.
The notice gives you a church or a chapel, a time, and not much else. Close by are St Matthew's on Chewings Street in Page and, for a funeral home service, the Bluegum Chapel at William Cole Funerals on Nettlefold Street, Belconnen. Put the full name and service time in the notes (both are on the notice), and the funeral director's team will normally set the funeral flowers out. A bunch to the house a week later gets noticed. Flowers won't change what's happened, and they're still what the family remembers. On the card: "Thinking of you all. With love."
A sheath has no foam, so after the service the family can unwrap it, recut the stems and stand it in a tall vase for most of another week. The Pink Lily & Rose Sheath is good at this, because the lily buds still closed at the service open over the next few days. Browse wreaths and sheaths.
Some sends don't come with a clear occasion, and that's fine: a neighbour just home from North Canberra Hospital, a friend you haven't rung in too long. Thinking-of-you flowers cover most of them, get well flowers suit the neighbour, and just because is a real reason too. On the card: "Thought of you today."
Anna's suggestion: the Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch. Lilac and lime read as neither birthday nor sympathy, which is the point here.

A house: a mobile and a safe spot. Weetangera Primary: the teacher and class. Burkitt Street aged care: the name and room. Mary Potter Circuit: which hospital, which ward. A funeral: the name and start time.
A florist in or close to Weetangera builds the flowers and drives them out. In our experience they're taken in by whoever answers, the school office, aged-care reception, the ward desk, or the funeral director's team. Order before the cutoff and they go on today's run.
Hearing nothing after you pay is normal, and a parent will often ring once they've found a spot for the flowers, not the minute the doorbell goes. To check or change anything, ring us on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday (the 02 8090 0577 number above reaches the same team), or email [email protected].
Your order goes to one of our partner florists near Weetangera. On the delivery day they build it, load the van, drive it out. If the house is empty, they'll usually ring the mobile in the notes, then use the safe spot you named. The ones I've seen go wrong are nearly always the same: no mobile, no safe spot, and a bunch doing a second lap of Belconnen. Something not right when it lands? Email us a photo that day and we sort it.
And then the flowers are on their bench, which was the whole point.
