Flower delivery to Spence is same day when you order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am on a Saturday, to a house, a hospital ward or a chapel. Ordering later? Pick any day at checkout. At North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, put the ward and their full name in the notes. For a birthday, our Pastel Pink Lilies & Roses Arrangement below takes two minutes to buy online. Sending lilies to Spence? In a cool Canberra house they keep opening for weeks
Oriental lilies open one bloom at a time: one flower out when they arrive, two or three buds behind it, and in a cool room each bud takes its time. In my experience a stem can go close to three weeks.
Every new bloom brings fresh anthers, the rust-coloured tips loaded with pollen, and with kids running past, a school shirt finds them eventually. Pinch them off with a tissue as each flower opens. Wet pollen brushes away. Dry pollen bonds to fabric, so lift it with sticky tape and never wipe. I learned that on my own apron at Salt in Kingscliff.
We deliver right across Spence, from Kuringa Drive to Copland Drive, and most of what we send is a birthday, a new baby, a goodbye, or someone thinking of them from a long way off.
Mum's turning ninety and she's been in the same Spence house since the seventies, which, out here, isn't unusual at all. If she's moved to RFBI Holt Masonic Village on Hardwick Crescent, put her room number in the notes. If she's still at home, flag it if she might miss a knock. I learned that in 2008 off Darlington Drive in Banora Point, knocking three times before I found the birthday girl out the back, pruning her roses. She hadn't heard a thing.
Anna's call: for a ninetieth, something that arrives in its own vase or box, low enough for the coffee table. A tall bunch in a borrowed jug is the one that gets knocked over.
A new grandchild, and you're looking at the first photo on your phone from another city. Hospital or home, both are fine. At North Canberra Hospital in Bruce or the Centenary Hospital in Garran, hospital flowers tend to go to the maternity ward desk, so the ward and the new mum's full name do the work. Once they're home, a knock can wake a baby who took an hour to settle, so say if the flowers should be left at the door. On the card: Welcome, little one. Sleep when you can.
Keep the scent soft for a newborn, because a shared room fills fast. Roses and gerberas carry very little. Oriental lilies can wait for the lounge room later.
You've read the notice twice and said you'd sort the flowers. For the Norwood Park chapel in Mitchell or a burial at Gungahlin Cemetery, put the service time in the notes so the funeral flowers get there before the mourners do. For the family, sympathy flowers to the house a few days later. If the family is Muslim and the funeral prayer is at the Islamic Society of Belconnen on Crofts Crescent, in our experience flowers don't go to the mosque. A simple white arrangement to the home afterwards is the way, once the family has said flowers are welcome. On the card: Thinking of you all, with love.
White suits a chapel and most faiths, though not a Hindu family, so ask if you're unsure. Out of the sun it stays crisp the longest, too.
Plenty of what we send fits no category at all, and the card says more than the flowers do. Anna has a default for those orders.
The Australian Native Arrangement. It's built in wet foam inside its own box, so there's no vase to find, and the protea can go two weeks or more. Protea is a heavy drinker, so top the foam up with water every couple of days.

A house: where to leave the flowers if nobody answers. A village: the room, at RFBI Holt or Villaggio Sant'Antonio in Page. A hospital: the ward, at North Canberra Hospital or Calvary Bruce Private. A service: the time, at William Cole Funerals on Nettlefold Street or Norwood Park.
At a house, whoever answers the door. At a hospital or a village, the desk tends to sign and staff take the flowers up. At a funeral, the funeral director. In before 2pm on a weekday, and it's in Spence that afternoon.
Your confirmation comes by email, and card changes go to [email protected]. Ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and one of our team will check on the order. If they haven't rung by teatime, they're probably still showing the neighbours.
One of our partner florists near Spence makes your order up and takes it out that day. If nobody answers and the notes are blank, the florist usually rings you. That's nearly always what goes wrong out here. If it isn't right when it lands, send us a photo the same day. We've sent Canberra orders to partner florists since 2008, when Canberra was one of the ten places the Kingscliff shop phone rang for most and we weren't even Lily's Florist yet.
Flowers can't fix much (Andrew would agree), and they still get talked about for a week.
