It's their birthday and you won't be there when the card gets opened. Send the birthday flowers to the house with a mobile number in the notes, in case nobody's home, or to Sunshine Coast Grammar if that's where they work.

I learned about schools the hard way. In 2008 I drove a birthday bunch from our Kingscliff shop to a teacher at Lindisfarne, and because the notes just said Lindisfarne, I went to the senior campus on Mahers Lane in Terranora (I didn't know a school could have two campuses, which tells you how new we were). She taught Year 2, and Year 2 was at the junior school on Sunshine Avenue in Tweed Heads South, so back down the hill I went, arriving just as the bell rang and crossing the playground with the gerberas held over my head. Years later both our girls went to Lindisfarne. I never got the campus wrong again.

Grammar is all on one site but runs from Prep to Year 12, so put the teacher's full name and year level in the notes. In our experience the front office does the rest.

Home from surgery or still in a hospital bed, you just want something to reach them. If they're home, send the get well flowers to the house. If they're still in, name the hospital (Buderim Private on Elsa Wilson Drive is the closest, then Nambour General or Sunshine Coast University Hospital), the ward and their full name.

From what our florists have seen, hospital flowers go to the front reception or the ward desk, and staff take them to the bed within a few hours. On the card: "Put your feet up. Love from all of us."

The notice gives the time and the chapel, and not much else. For the service, put the funeral director's name, the venue and the time in the notes; in our experience the director sets the funeral flowers out before anyone arrives. For a morning service, order the day before. For the family, send sympathy flowers to the house a week or so later, once the casseroles stop.

Flowers are nowhere near enough for what they're going through, and somehow they still help. "With love, and so sorry" is plenty for the card.

A wreath is built on a ring of wet floral foam, so it holds its water through a long service and the warm afternoon after. The Wreath With White & Purple Tones is the one I'd send.

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading. A lot of people have only just moved into Forest Glen, into a new house or a village like Greenwood on Grammar School Way, and flowers are a lovely way to say welcome or just because. Anna has a view on this one.

Natives Flowers With A Vase. The vase is half the battle in a house full of boxes, and natives are tough stems that drink steadily in a warm room. Once the softer flowers finish, the woody ones can dry on a shelf.
