The birthday's today and you're not in Canberra. More than a third of Giralang homes are owned outright (2021 Census), so plenty of the birthdays here are big ones: 70th birthday flowers, or birthday flowers for Mum sent from interstate. The home address matters too. I learned that in 2008, carrying a get-well bunch from our Kingscliff shop into the old Byron Bay Hospital on Shirley Street. The patient had gone home that morning. I found her in Suffolk Park in her dressing gown, asking why I'd tried the hospital first. In our experience stays run shorter than the sender expects. So put the Giralang address in the notes as well, or send get well flowers straight to the house. On the card: "Thinking of you. Hope you're home soon."

An Oriental lily's scent builds as each bud opens, which is lovely in a lounge room and a lot for the next bed. Gerberas carry no scent at all. For a shared ward, they're what I'd send.

The notice has a time and a place on it, and you can't be there. Funeral flowers go to the venue, with the name on the notice and the start time in the notes: Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Tyrrell Circuit in Kaleen, the parish church that takes in Giralang, or the chapel at Norwood Park on Sandford Street, Mitchell. For a lawn grave at Gungahlin Cemetery, a wreath or sheath lies flat where a vase would tip.

Flowers are a small thing next to what's happened, and families still remember who sent them. Sympathy flowers to the home tend to land once the house has gone quiet. On the card, "So sorry. With love to all of you" is enough.

Some orders aren't a birthday, a ward or a funeral: a housewarming at the new apartments at the rebuilt Giralang shops on Canopus Crescent (apartment number in the notes), a thank-you for a teacher at Giralang Primary on Atalumba Close, or no reason at all. Celebration flowers or thank you flowers both work, and Anna has one that covers all three.
