Flowers can be in Hexham, Newcastle, today. Order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday, and they're delivered that same day to the house, or to someone at work. Sending to a birthday lunch at Hexham Bowling Club? Pop the function room and an organiser's mobile in the notes. The Bright Arrangement With Chocolates needs no vase, which suits a busy workplace. Choose from our same-day range below, or call us and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will set up the order with you.
Sending flowers to a Hexham yard or workshop? Keep them away from the engines
Engine exhaust carries ethylene, the same gas ripening fruit gives off, and a lot of flowers take it as the signal to finish. Carnations show it first: a fortnight or more in a clean room, but parked near a running engine the petals curl inward like they've nodded off. Waxflower shrugs off heat like a native should, but near exhaust it drops every tiny flower at once. Chrysanthemums couldn't care less.
I learned that one at Salt in Kingscliff, from a bucket of carnations left by the back door where the vans idled. By lunch every head had curled. So keep yard flowers at reception or in the lunchroom, never on the workshop bench.
Send flowers into Hexham and the address is often a workplace: a yard, a depot or a showroom on the highway (there are only a few streets of houses), and the occasion a birthday or a thank-you. Then there's the bowling club, the one with the giant mosquito on the sign, and Sandgate Cemetery, just down Maitland Road.
Their birthday falls on a work day, and work is a yard or a workshop, which is a nicer place for flowers to turn up than you'd think, because nobody there is expecting them. Put the business name, their full name and their mobile in the notes. In our experience someone on the front desk signs and the flowers wait inside, off the hot hardstand. If they're a driver and out on the road all day, send the flowers to their house instead. And flowers for a bloke are completely fine, by the way (our birthday flowers for him are made for exactly that).
The Bright Arrangement With Chocolates and the Native Arrangement With Chocolates both sit in wet foam, so either one is happy at reception. If the counter is anywhere near the workshop, go the Native: it's a protea and a pincushion, and proteas barely notice exhaust.
It's a big birthday or an anniversary lunch at Hexham Bowling Club on Old Maitland Road, you can't make it, and the whole family will be in one room, which is the best place for flowers to land. Add the function room, the start time and an organiser's mobile, because without a room name whoever is carrying the flowers goes looking. I found that out the hard way in 2008 at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club, on the same street as our shop: I carried an eightieth birthday arrangement straight across the green in my work shoes until a very polite man in whites walked me off it. The flowers were fine. I wasn't.
Keep table flowers low, so people can see each other across them. A celebration arrangement in foam carries its own water right through the speeches.
The notice says Sandgate Cemetery, which has its own chapel, and you can't be there. For funeral flowers at the chapel or the graveside, put the funeral director and the service time in the notes, and for a morning service, order the day before. Or send flowers to the house a few days later. Sending something never feels like enough, and the family remembers it anyway. On the card: "Thinking of you all, with love."
Anna's call: for the graveside, a wreath or a sheath, because a vase tips on soft grass. The White Lily & Rose Sheath lies flat on a casket in the chapel too, and white, cream and soft green sit quietly among the other tributes.
A thank-you to the mechanic who squeezed the ute in, a first week at a new job, the neighbour who minded the dog: plenty of orders aren't a birthday or a funeral, and some need no reason at all (just because covers those). Anna has a view on this one.
My pick is the Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch. Its lisianthus open bud by bud across the week, and the lime balls are green trick, a carnation that goes a fortnight. Same rule as the yard: keep it away from a running engine.

A house: their mobile. Yard or workshop: business name, their full name and their mobile. Hexham Bowling Club: function room, start time and organiser's mobile. Sandgate Cemetery Chapel: funeral director and service time (the day before for a morning service). Calvary St Joseph's, Sandgate: name and room. John Hunter Hospital: name and ward.
From what we've seen, whoever is on duty at work, the club's staff, the funeral director or the ward desk. At a house with nobody home, the driver usually rings their mobile. Order before 2pm on a weekday and it's on today's run.
The confirmation email lands straight away, and one of our partner florists near Hexham makes the flowers up on the day you picked. If something needs changing (a new address, a different name on the card), email [email protected] or ring our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. And if they don't ring to say thanks that afternoon, that's normal. If the flowers went to their work, your person is probably flat out, and the thank-you often comes that night.
Work deliveries have one catch. Some yards shut the front office mid-afternoon and run a skeleton crew on Saturday. A box of roses locked in a site office over a long weekend is nobody's idea of a birthday. If the yard's locked up, the driver will usually ring the mobile in the notes, then you. If anything isn't right when the flowers land, tell us that day and we'll fix it, with a photo so you can see.
Most flowers last a week or two. When they go to work, the fuss in the lunchroom gets talked about a lot longer.
