Flowers to Kincumber South: Get the Site Number Right

You are on a screen a long way from this postcode, picking a bunch for someone whose kitchen you have not stood in for a while, and the part that will actually decide whether this works is not the bunch. It is the address field. Kincumber South is 1.27 square kilometres and about 720 people, and roughly a third of the homes in it sit inside a land lease village rather than on an open street. An order that says 57 Empire Bay Drive is a driver at a boom gate with one number covering the lot. An order that says 206/57 goes to a door. I am Andrew, I built the network this order runs on, and I have never been to Kincumber South. Our florist has, most weeks. That is the bit that matters.

One Vase, Two Bedrooms, and the Water Nobody Tops Up

Anna, qualified florist | ten to fifteen thousand orders taken on the phones out of a spare room in Pottsville

A vase holds roughly a litre. A dozen stems in a warm closed room drink through two to three centimetres of it a day, which on a wide mouthed vessel is most of a litre gone by the third morning. On the phones I could hear the ceiling fan going and I already knew the arithmetic. In a house with one person in it, nobody is standing at the tap on day two. The water goes down, the cut ends lift clear, air gets into the stem, and the plumbing shuts.

What that looks like from the other end of the phone is a caller telling me the flowers died from the top. Roses and lisianthus go first and they go at the neck, so the head tips over while the foliage underneath still looks like it came out of the shop that morning. People read that as bad flowers. It is a hydration failure that started 48 hours earlier and finished where they could see it. I had callers ring on day four convinced they had been sold seconds. The stems were fine. The litre ran out.

So the vessel does more work than the stems do. Twenty to twenty five centimetres across, low, straight sided, filled to the shoulder rather than half way, and it will carry itself through a week with one refill instead of four. Chrysanthemums and disbuds drink slower than roses and hold a fortnight in that setup. Send the good stems. Skip the tall ones.

How a Kincumber South Order Actually Moves

There is no warehouse on Empire Bay Drive with your order in a box. It comes out of a cool room in Kincumber next door, built the morning it goes out, driven over by the person who built it. Sounds simple enough, and it is.

You order, it goes out as a paid order to a partner florist in or close to Kincumber South, they build it and drive it. No post. No boxes.

The Kincumber South address box, and the one line that gets it to the door

Roughly a third of the homes here sit inside a land lease village rather than on an open street. Two orders, same street, same flowers, same florist. One of them gets there.

Stops at the gate

Mum
57 Empire Bay Drive
Kincumber South NSW 2251
(phone field left blank)

What the driver has: one street number covering a whole village, a boom gate, and no way to narrow it down. The flowers go back to the shop, or they sit at an office until somebody works it out.

Gets to the door

Margaret Doyle
206/57 Empire Bay Drive
Kincumber South NSW 2251
0400 000 000

What the driver has: a surname to match at reception, a site number to drive to, and a mobile as the fallback. Three lines, one delivery.

  • Full name, not "Mum"The card can say Mum. The address label cannot. Reception matches a surname.
  • Site number goes firstIn front of the street number. 206/57, not 57.
  • A mobile beats a noteA number in the phone field is the difference between a second attempt and a return.
  • Don't know the site?Put in what you have and ring 1300 360 469. We would rather ask than guess.

* Address shown is a format example, not a real recipient. Village layouts vary and reception arrangements change, so this reflects what our florists tend to strike rather than a rule any village has published.

What People Actually Send to Kincumber South

Median age here is 68. Average household is 1.7 people. Three shapes cover most of what leaves for this postcode, and for all three the arrangements that come with a vase beat the bunches, because a vessel the recipient does not have to go looking for is worth more than four extra stems.

A 70th, and the flight didn't work out

It is a round number, it is on a Tuesday, and you will see the photo of it that night instead of standing in it. With a median age of 68 this postcode runs more 70ths than anything else on the calendar.

These go to a house, not a venue. No function room booking, no reception desk in between, so the only real question is what time of day, and morning wins. Order the day before and give us a date if you want it there before the phone starts going. Our 70th birthday flowers sit at the scale these rooms can take.

Anna's note on the stems: Tight buds photograph better and often lack the energy to open. They sit shut for three days then drop. Ask for blooms a third open on arrival. The arrangement should peak on the day, not the Tuesday after when everyone has gone home.

Sympathy flowers going to a house that now has one person in it

A postcode with a median age of 68 loses people, and 1.7 people per household means the flowers usually land with whoever is left. You may have missed the service. Plenty of people do.

Sending to the home is a different job to sending to a funeral, and it is the one worth getting right, because the week after is when the visitors stop. Our white sympathy flowers are built to be received by someone who is not up to arranging anything. If the card is the part you are stuck on, five words does it. "Thinking of you and Bill" beats a paragraph.

Keep it low and rounded. Height creates presence in a room and presence is the last thing a grieving person wants standing over the kitchen table. Whites, creams, muted greens. Disbuds and spray roses hold a fortnight and need nothing done to them, which matters when nothing is going to be done to them.

Has the address changed to Gosford Hospital?

You found out by text, you are hours away, and sending something is the only lever you have from there.

Gosford Hospital is where the serious admissions from this end of the coast go. It is the regional trauma centre and its emergency department is one of the busiest in the state, which means the wards run their own rules and those rules differ ward to ward. In our experience some areas take flowers at reception and log them, and some take none at all. Ring 1300 360 469 before you order and we will work out together if it should go to the ward or wait for the trip home, where our hospital arrangements are built for a bedside table rather than a bench.

Anna on shared wards

Skip the lilies. The pollen on the linen is real enough, but the fragrance is the bigger problem in a four bed room with no window that opens, where the person two beds over gets no say and is possibly nauseated already. Low scent, small footprint, no standing water to go over a tray table that gets moved six times a day.

In by 2pm on a weekday and it is at the door this afternoon.

See the Deal of the Day

None of those three are it, it is just a Wednesday

No birthday, nobody is sick, nothing has happened. It has been a while and you know it has been a while. That is a reason.

For a Wednesday with nothing attached to it, ask for a compact mixed arrangement in a low vessel around twenty five centimetres across, weighted to chrysanthemums and disbuds with a few open stems for colour. It is the least showy thing on the page. It is also the one still standing when you ring on Sunday, which on a no occasion order is the entire point. If you would rather the florist run with whatever came in best that morning, Florist's Choice does exactly that.

How to Order Flowers to Kincumber South

Phone

1300 360 469
7am to 6pm weekdays
10am Saturdays
Or order online any time.

Same Day Cutoff

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. No Sunday delivery. Village and reception drop offs run better before lunch. An afternoon run into a gated address is the one most likely to need a second attempt.

Delivery $16.95

Subsidised. A hand delivery into a pocket this size costs us more than $16.95 and we wear the gap, because charging the real freight would make sending flowers feel like posting a parcel.

The Kincumber South Address Rule

Recipient's full name, not "Mum". Site number in front of the street number if the address sits inside a village. A mobile in the phone field. That is the whole protocol and it clears nearly every failed delivery into this postcode. If you have half of it, put in what you have and ring us. Order before 2pm today and the flowers are at the door this afternoon.

After You Order

Once you hit order it stops being yours and becomes a job on somebody's morning. It lands in our system, we match it to a partner florist in or near Kincumber South and send it through as a paid order, they build it from what came into the cool room that week, and it goes on the run with the site number attached to it. Most of this postcode is a front door handover on a quiet street. The rest is a village address where the florist checks in at the office on the way through instead of guessing at a site.

If it lands wrong, tell us inside 24 hours. A photo from the recipient plus the delivery confirmation sorts it in one call instead of four emails. 1300 360 469, [email protected], or live chat on the site.

Siobhan, the other half of Lily's Florist, on the bit we have not fixed

Every so often the confirmation email does not turn up. One came through Feefo this month, a customer who said the website was fine and the flowers were fine and they never got a word to say the order existed. Which from where they were sitting is indistinguishable from having handed their card details to nobody (and I would have thought the same thing, honestly). It is a mail deliverability problem and the order is nearly always sitting in the queue exactly where it should be, which is not much comfort at 9pm. Check the junk folder once, then ring us. We can read the order number back to you.

And nobody is going to text you the moment the door opens. The recipient might not ring for a day or two, especially if they are 68 and not glued to a phone. That silence is not evidence of anything.

In 2009 the whole operation was two desks, an Eftpos machine, and orders going out to partner florists as Word documents over a fax. Yes I said fax. It went from about 20 florists to over 800. The fax is gone. The part where a person in the town opens the order and builds it that morning has not changed at all, and that was always the point of the thing.

Siobhan and I bought a flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006 with a baby due in seven months and no floristry between us. The brand came three years after that. Our daughters Asha and Ivy have grown up through all of it. The full story is here.
