Lilies Are Great Value in a Kleinton House, With One Exception

Anna, qualified florist | on the one house I would leave the lilies out of

Lilies are some of the best value in the range. One stem carries three or four buds that open in turn, so the bunch still looks new a week on. Pinch the orange anthers off as each flower opens and the pollen stays off shirts and pale rugs.

Leave them out of any house with a cat. Every part of a true lily is poisonous to cats, the pollen and the vase water included, and licking a dusting of pollen off its fur is enough. I was taught that in North Carolina before I was taught to condition a stem. Send roses or gerberas instead, and on a florist's choice order write “no lilies, there's a cat” in the notes, because a mixed bunch often carries one.

Flowers Delivered to Kleinton for Birthdays, Anniversaries and Funerals

Kleinton grew from 1,617 people in 2016 to 2,205 in 2021, with an average age of 36, so a good share of what goes in is for young families in new houses. Birthdays lead and sympathy comes next, and our native flowers suit both.

Birthday Flowers for a Busy House With Little Kids at the Door

You have a birthday and an address in one of the newer streets, and a fair idea the house is chaos most days by three. Put a mobile in the notes so the driver rings ahead. I learnt that in 2008 on Mylestom Circle, in Seabreeze Estate at Pottsville: a toddler opened the door, the cat bolted past my ankles, and I spent ten minutes in my good shop shoes (the wrong shoes for hedges) fishing it out from next door, roses still under one arm. Kleinton has its share of streets like that one.

Anna's call: the Gerbera Bunch + Teddy + Birthday Balloon. Gerbera stems are hollow and clog quickly, so fresh water each day or two keeps the heads up. If a neck bends, recut two centimetres off the stem and stand it in shallow warm water for an hour.

Anniversary Roses: the Office in Town, or Home Before School Pickup

Ten years, two kids and a mortgage in Kleinton, and you would like the anniversary to be more than a card on the bench. If they work in Toowoomba, send it to the office, where people see it arrive. If it is going home, a morning order gives it the best chance of beating school pickup (and sticky fingers). Start with our anniversary flowers, or love and romance flowers when there is no particular date at all.

Roses like the 3 Wrapped Red Roses arrive with a few scruffy outer petals, on purpose. Those are guard petals, and they took the knocks on the way. Peel them off and the bloom underneath is fresh. Angled cut, straight into water.

Funeral Flowers: Name the Chapel and the Service Time

A funeral notice gives you a day, a time and a place, and not much else. Put the funeral director and the service time in the notes (Burstows on Ruthven Street, Hiram Philp on Herries Street, or a church such as Highfields Baptist on Kuhls Road) and our funeral flowers reach them before the service starts. For a burial at Cabarlah Cemetery, a wreath or a sheath lies flat beside the grave.

Flowers are a small thing next to losing someone, and the family still keeps the cards. A week on, sympathy flowers for the home arrive about when the casseroles stop. “Thinking of you all, with love” is plenty.

Anna, on white flowers in a quiet house

The Gorgeous Whites Bunch shows marks by about day four. In the coolest room, out of the sun, it stays clean a good while longer.

Not Sure What to Send? Our Second Most Popular Arrangement

Some orders fit no heading: the neighbour who fed the dog all week, a teacher at Amaroo Environmental Education Centre on Kleinton School Road, a friend who has just got the keys. Thank-you flowers and just because flowers cover all of those. Anna has a view on this.

Send the Australian Native Arrangement. It sits in wet foam, so nobody needs a vase, and the leucadendron in it goes a fortnight or more in a moderate room. Top up the foam every two or three days. There is not a lily in it, either.

Get It There Today: Cutoffs, Notes and Who Takes It In

When to order

2pm on weekdays, so the florist can make it and drive it out the same day.
10am on Saturday, because it is a shorter day.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Ordering later? Pick any day at checkout.

What the notes need

A mobile and the full street address, because Kleinton shares the 4352 postcode with Highfields, Cabarlah and Meringandan. For a hospital, the ward and bed at Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street, St Vincent's on Scott Street or St Andrew's on North Street. For a funeral, the director and the service time.

Who takes it in

At a house, whoever answers. On a ward, in our experience, the nurses' station takes it first. At Carinity Brownesholme on Highfields Road, reception tends to sign, and at Amaroo the front desk usually does. Order this morning and it can be in Kleinton this afternoon.

What Happens Between Checkout and Kleinton

You will get an email once the order is confirmed. Then it goes quiet, and quiet is normal. Plenty of people do not ring the same night (I heard that worry more times than I could count on the phones, from 2006 until Ivy arrived in 2011), and it nearly always means they are busy enjoying them.

Anything not right? Ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays, or email [email protected].

Andrew, on the Toowoomba end of it

The order goes to one of our partner florists in Toowoomba. Some have been with us more than thirteen years. They make it that day and drive it out. Now and then an order arrived marked Highfields for a house in Kleinton, and the florist rang to check before leaving. Something wrong when it arrives? Send us a photo that day and we sort it out.

After that it is up to them, and usually a pair of small hands helping to unwrap.

About Siobhan, Who Wrote This

Andrew and Siobhan Thomson, co-founders of Lily's Florist
Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Andrew and I bought a little flower and gift shop on Marine Parade in Kingscliff in 2006, and for the first few years we delivered the flowers ourselves, to hospitals, nursing homes, churches and a great many houses with a dog at the gate. I took the phone orders myself until February 2011.

Toowoomba and the towns around it, Kleinton included, were among our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008, before the network even had a name. Today Lily's Florist works with more than eight hundred partner florists across Australia. The whole story is about Lily's Florist.
