Sending Flowers to a Cabarlah House? An Arrangement Brings Its Own Water

Anna, qualified florist | on houses where the vase is still in a box

A hand-tied bunch needs someone at the other end to find it a vase. In a house still half in boxes, nobody can, so the bunch waits on the bench in its wrap, the cut ends dry and seal over, and by the time the vase turns up the heads are dropping.

An arrangement sits in wet foam in its own box or vase, so it is drinking from the minute it is made. The box is the vase. Top the foam up with a cup of water every two or three days and leave it be.

I learnt that moving house with small kids, when our vase came out of the very last box. If you would rather send a bunch anyway, a bucket does the job: recut each stem on an angle and get it straight into water.

Flower Delivery in Cabarlah for Birthdays, Funerals and Hospital Stays

Birthdays are the biggest reason people send flowers through us, and sympathy comes next. With Borneo Barracks bringing families in from all over the country, plenty of the people sending to Cabarlah are a long way from it, and some of the people receiving have only just unpacked. That is why our flower arrangements come up more than once below.

Birthday Flowers, Sent From Interstate or Down the Road

You know the birthday and the street, and you cannot be there to hand the flowers over. Most birthday flowers here go to a house, so the street number and a mobile in the notes do the work. On the New England Highway, that means the full five-digit number.

In 2007 a soldier rang our Marine Parade shop from East Timor, ordering for his wife’s birthday. The line dropped out three times, so I took the card message down in three goes and numbered the pieces. I drove the flowers to Pearl Street that afternoon. She read the card on the step, laughed at the numbers, and said that was about how all their calls went. Plenty of birthday orders for Cabarlah start the same way, with someone in another state who would rather be handing the flowers over. Cabarlah is also home to the 7th Signal Regiment, who would have got through in one go.

Anna’s pick: the Pastel Pink Lilies & Roses Arrangement, already in its own foam. Pinch the orange anthers out as each lily opens and the pollen stays off the carpet.

Funeral Flowers for a Toowoomba Chapel or the Cemetery on the Highway

Someone has died, and the service is in Toowoomba, at the graveside, or both. Funeral flowers go to the funeral director (Hiram Philp on Herries Street, say, or Burstows on Ruthven Street) or to the church, such as St Anne’s on Highfields Road or Highfields Baptist on Kuhls Road. For a burial at Cabarlah Cemetery on the highway, in our experience the flowers travel with the director, so put the director’s name and the service time in the notes. Flowers for the family home can follow. “With love to you all, and so sorry” is plenty for the card.

Flowers are a small thing when someone has died. People still notice who sent them.

A sheath lies flat on a coffin or on the grass, with no stand needed, and the Pink Lily & Rose Sheath can go home afterwards into a bucket of water. Delivered too early, it waits in a back room, which is why the florists I worked with rang the director for the delivery window.

Get Well Flowers Land at the Ward Desk First

They are in hospital in Toowoomba and you cannot visit before the weekend. Name the hospital and the ward: Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street, St Vincent’s on Scott Street or St Andrew’s on North Street. In our experience hospital flowers stop at the ward desk and the staff take them in. For Carinity Brownesholme on Highfields Road, add the room number. “Back on your feet soon” covers most get well flowers.

Anna, on the ward

3 Gerberas In A Vase arrives already in its vase, so nobody on the ward hunts for one, and gerberas carry no scent to bother the next bed.

Not Sure What to Send? The Natives Suit Almost Anyone

A neighbour who fed the dog. A teacher at Geham State School at the end of the year. A mate who has just been posted out. Not all of those are thank-you flowers, and none has a heading of its own. Anna has a view on this.

Send the Native Arrangement With Chocolates. Protea, leucadendron and brunia are woody stems sitting in foam, and the leucadendron goes a fortnight or more in an ordinary lounge room. Natives read right for a man or a woman, a thank-you or a farewell.

More ways to choose

A birthday order in before 2pm on a weekday can be in Cabarlah today.

Two Cutoffs, One Highway Number and Who Signs for It

When it has to be in

Before 2pm on a weekday for same-day, which leaves the florist time to make it and get it on the road.
Before 10am on Saturday, a shorter day for the florist.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother’s Day.

What the notes need

The full street number. On the New England Highway that is the five-digit one, like the Farmers Arms at 9864. A mobile for the person receiving them. The ward for a hospital, the room at Brownesholme, or the funeral director and service time.

Who takes them in

Whoever answers at the house, and if nobody does, the florist rings the mobile. The ward desk at the hospital, reception at Brownesholme, the funeral director for a service. For anyone at Borneo Barracks, send to the house. Order before 2pm and it goes out this afternoon.

After You Order, the Email Comes Before the Knock

You get an email once the order is confirmed. It goes to one of our partner florists in Toowoomba, some of whom have been with us for well over a decade, and they make it that day and drive it out. If something is not right when it lands, tell us the same day with a photo and we fix it.

Our team is on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays. Changes go to [email protected].

Siobhan, on sending from the other end of the country

When I was on the phones, from 2006 until just before Ivy arrived in February 2011, the worried calls the next morning nearly always came from a long way away, because Mum hadn’t rung. She had usually rung someone else first. Now and then an order came through with just “New England Highway” and no number, which on a road that long meant the florist was ringing before they were driving (and we would always rather they rang).

The flowers get there. The thank-you call runs on their timetable.

From a Shop on Marine Parade to Eight Hundred Florists

Andrew and Siobhan Thomson, co-founders of Lily's Florist
Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Siobhan and I bought a flower shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, in 2006 and took the phone orders ourselves until 2013. Toowoomba and the towns around it, Cabarlah included, were among our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008.

In 2009 that became Lily’s Florist, and the network now has more than eight hundred partner florists. The rest of the story is on our about Lily’s Florist page.
