Kotara, today: order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday, and the flowers are there this afternoon. Sending to someone at Westfield Kotara? Add the shop name and their mobile in the notes, because "Westfield" alone is more than 260 shops. Our best-selling Australian Natives Bunch and the Gerbera Bunch + Teddy + Birthday Balloon are in the range below, ready to buy securely online. Or call us, and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will do the whole order with you.
Flowers for a Kotara house: when a bunch beats foam, and why the tie stays on
A house has a vase somewhere, so a bunch suits it. A properly tied one stands up on the bench by itself: the stems cross at one binding point and fan out underneath, each reaching the water on its own. I tied hundreds of them at Salt in Kingscliff before my hands stopped arguing with me.
Leave the tie on, or the bunch falls into a heap nobody can rebuild. Two centimetres off the bottom on an angle, so the cut can't sit flat and seal against the base, then into a vase, with the flowers standing about one and a half times the height of the vase. Foam is for anywhere nobody has time to find one: a ward, a shop counter, or a house with a newborn in it.
Across the network, birthdays come first and sympathy second. With John Hunter next door in New Lambton Heights, new babies belong on that list here too, along with orders that have no reason at all, which is what thinking of you flowers are for.
The birthday is today, and you have to pick: the house or where they work. At work, give the shop or business name and their mobile. At the house, say who'll be home, and whether the kids can take the flowers. Not sure which flowers? Our best-selling birthday flowers are the safe place to start.
I learned the bit about kids in 2008, off Darlington Drive in Banora Point. A boy of about nine took the birthday bunch, told me he wasn't allowed to talk to strangers, and shut the door. Delivered, technically. His mum rang the shop that night, laughing.
Anna's pick for a 40th birthday: the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch. The lilies open bud by bud, so it looks fuller on day four than on the doorstep. Pinch the anthers off as each one opens, before the pollen lands on the tablecloth.
A photo and a birth weight just landed on your phone. Ask first whether they're still at John Hunter or home already, because the notes are different.
For the hospital, the notes need mum's full name and the maternity ward; in our experience the ward desk takes the flowers in. Home already? Send flowers a day or two after they get home, once the visitors thin out. For the card: "Welcome, little one. Sleep when you can." More in our new baby flowers.
Nothing heavily scented in a room with a newborn, and nothing that drops petals everywhere. An arrangement sitting in wet foam, like the Blissful Botanics Arrangement, wants a top-up every second day and no vase at all.
The notice gives a time and a chapel, and you can't be there. Send flowers to the service, or to the family home afterwards.
Put the venue and start time in the notes, Simplicity Funerals on Brunker Road, say, and order the day before a morning service. Flowers don't change what's happened. The family still notices who sent them. On the card, "Thinking of you all, with love" is enough. See our funeral flowers or sympathy flowers for home.
A sheath lies along the casket; a wreath stands on an easel. Whites and soft purples sit beside whatever the family chose without competing. For the service, the Wreath With White & Purple Tones is the one I'd send. For the family home afterwards, the Gorgeous White Arrangement says the same thing more quietly.
A new job, a rough week, the neighbour who minded the dog. Plenty of orders don't fit a heading. Anna has a view on this one.
Go the Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch: lisianthus, roses and greens tied in a spiral, so it stands up in whatever vase they've got, in colours that suit nearly anyone. The mixed flowers range has more like it.

Mum's birthday is today? Her flowers can be at the house this afternoon.
Birthday Flowers for MumAn order placed before 2pm on a weekday goes out today; our partner florists near Kotara need the afternoon to make up the flowers and deliver them.
On Saturday the cutoff is 10am, because our partner florists work a shorter day.
Later than that, pick any day at checkout. No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A house: their mobile, who'll be home, and a shady spot if nobody is. Westfield Kotara: the shop name and their mobile. John Hunter or Newcastle Private Hospital: full name and ward. A funeral: venue and start time. Simplicity in Adamstown, White Lady in Charlestown and the Church of the Good Shepherd on Joslin Street are all close by.
In our experience: whoever answers, the shop counter, the ward desk, or the funeral director's team. Order before 2pm on a weekday and it's there this afternoon.
A confirmation email with your order number arrives within minutes (check junk if it doesn't). A florist in or close to Kotara makes up the flowers and drives them out. Card or address changes go to [email protected].
If something's wrong when the flowers arrive, call 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. One of our team will ask for a photo and fix it the same day.
I took the calls from 2006 until February 2011, and the one I heard most was some version of "I haven't heard a thing." Kotara is mostly houses, so the flowers sit on the bench until everyone's home, then it's dinner, homework, and the call comes at eight. Or tomorrow. Waiting on that call is the worst bit, I know. And if a flower you picked is out of season, we email you before anything changes (nobody likes a surprise swap, least of all me).
The card tends to end up on the fridge.
